The podcast industry is growing fast; the industry generated an estimated $479.1 million in revenue in 2018 and is expected to produce more than $1 billion by 2021, according to a new report from the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PwC. The latest revenue figure represents an increase of 53 percent in just a year.

The shift to podcast ads backs up what industry titans, like Spotify, have been saying for months. The company plans to spend up to $500 million this year on podcast-related acquisitions.

Reflecting the fact that 75% of UK advertisers are upping spend in podcasts, Nielsen has unveiled a measurement tool to gauge effectiveness in this growing ad space.

Nielsen believes that the UK’s 6 million weekly podcast listeners will double in the next three years. It is putting the tools in place for brands to “quantify the impact and effectiveness of their podcast ads” with the Nielsen Podcast Brand Effect.

The tool has already been running in the US and so far the results have found that 57% of podcast ads tested outperformed pre-roll video in driving purchase intent and 70% of respondents agreed that the podcast ads increased their awareness of products and services.

The podcasting industry was shaken up this week with the announcement that JRE is moving exclusively to Spotify and it looks like it has caught Apple’s attention.

Bloomberg reports that Apple is looking to increase its investment in original podcasts, as well as buying existing ones, to augment its nascent Apple TV+ service. While its easy to view this as a classic case of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted, Apple seems to view podcasts as either a by-product of video content or as material that could then be adapted to video.

Apple effectively invented the podcast format, which derives its name from the pioneering iPod digital audio player, but the pre-eminence of iTunes as a podcasting platform is under serious threat thanks to this recent development. You have to assume Joe Rogan (pictured) spoke to Apple before recently committing to Spotify, so it would be fascinating to know what led him to ultimately reject it.

Backtracks functions as a kind of fifth layer in the podcast listening ecosystem, enhancing the RSS feeds basic download-counting abilities with supplemental data from partners and podcast streaming app APIs.

None of that data is rigidly standardized, though. The Interactive Advertising Bureau has attempted to standardize podcast analytics terminology, but, so far, every podcast hosting service and audio analytics software provider counts engagement slightly differently.

The concept behind podcasting is simple: combine the best qualities of what we love about a radio show with the immense capabilities offered by the digital revolution.

And with this simplicity, comes great diversity. Podcasts come in all shapes and sizes, across languages and borders, dealing with an enormous variety of topics and speaking to the hearts of an ever-growing global audience.

It is no wonder that they have become one of the most beloved and popular media in the 21st century. But how did it all start – and where are we now?

A simple idea: a brief history of how podcasts came to be The advent of the internet and new digital tech has naturally played the biggest part in establishing the podcast industry.

A New FeedForAll Mac v2 Beta
A new beta of FeedForAll Mac has been released. The beta version of FeedForAll Mac now supports unified publishing. Publish the feed, all enclosures, images, and other files at the same time to FTP, .Mac, or servers on your local network. This feature also supports publishing the feed in a variety of export formats and publishing an OPML list.

- The Creative Commons and Track Back extensions have been added to the list of supported Extensions (XML Namespaces) when creating Feeds and Podcasts. FeedForAll Mac supports adding metadata elements for iTunes, Microsoft Simple List Extensions (cf), Dublin Core (dc), Syndication (sy), Content, and Media RSS (media) as well.

- Add the ability to generate a unique GUID. Add a preferences option to automatically generate a unique GUID.

- Add support for multiple categories, as allowed by the RSS 2.0 spec. ~ Create a backup of the current XML file before saving.

- Add search and replace to the feed.

- Add search and replace to the XML Source Editor.

- Import items from other feeds. FeedForAll Mac uses a new advanced import feature allowing the user greater control over the items imported.

- FeedForAll Mac now has OPML capabilities. This includes the ability to create a simple OPML list or blogroll of the feeds that you work with in FeedForAll Mac.

- In addition to being able to specify an XSL file, now a CSS file can be specified for controlling the display of feed contents.

RSS Cache is now included in the scripts directory. FeedForAll is pleased to announce the release of rss2html Cache. This new module allows users of the rss2html.php script the ability to have their source RSS feeds cached, significantly speeding up the web page display time. The new rss2html Cache module will expedite the retrieval and conversion of RSS feeds into html web pages. Once the feed is cached it will be read from the local hard drive for a specified amount of time. After the specified time has lapsed, the RSS feed will be fetched again. New FutureRSS
FutureRSS is a PHP script that enables webmasters to prepare content for their RSS feeds in advance, and have it automatically appear at the desired date and time. The FutureRSS script can be used with any RSS 2.0 feed, and allows content to be 'scheduled' to appear in the feed weeks, or even months later. Webmasters have found, to their dismay, that most RSS feed reader applications, and feed aggregator applications do not honor Publish Dates (PubDate) that are set into the future, making it impossible to prepare content in their RSS feeds ahead of time.

The FutureRSS script solves this problem, by not making any of the RSS feed's Items available until their PubDate becomes current. The new FutureRSS script will be made available free of charge to all registered users of FeedForAll and FeedForAll Mac. Additional details are available at:

The Swine Health Information Center is inviting pork sector stakeholders to provide their input into its annual plan or work planning process.
Each year, as part of its mission to protect and enhance the health of the U.S. swine herd by minimising the impact of emerging disease threats, the Swine Health Information Center reevaluates its activities and research priorities.
SHIC Executive Director Dr. Megan Niederwerder says stakeholders are invited to provide their input to help identify the greatest needs, the greatest emerging disease risks and where activities should be focussed in 2025.

Our five strategic priorities are to improve swine health information, to monitor and mitigate risk to swine health, to respond to emerging diseases, to conduct surveillance and discovery of emerging diseases and then to prioritise swine disease risk through our disease matrices.
We look at those five strategic priorities, we start to look at allocation of budget and resources then we have a series of stakeholder meetings that occur throughout the fall.
This includes pork producers, veterinary diagnosticians, swine health researchers, pork producer state organizations, swine veterinarians and other industry stakeholders that can help us to identify those emerging disease risks and priorities that should be included on the 2025 plan.
After the conclusion of the stakeholder listening sessions, we take those research priorities and ideas that have been generated to the two Swine Health Information Center working groups.
This working groups assist us in helping to prioritise each of the research topics with regards to how they help us to build a SHIC mission.
We then take those prioritised ideas and research objectives to the SHIC Board of Directors who help review and revise and ultimately approve the plan of work for the upcoming year.

Dr. Niederwerder says the goal is publish the plan by the end of the year to inform stakeholders of upcoming activities and outline research priorities to enable researchers to submit proposals to address those priorities.

It took about 20 hours of my time to go through 6 years of my correspondence with my 6 discovered relatives on my Focsaner side from Romania, and custom build a GEDCOM file using Behold as my guiding tool.

This was a great dry run of what entering data in Behold will be like, except that I couldn't enter the data directly into the Everything Report, but typed it into a GEDCOM instead. The painful part was manually entering the ID numbers and the parent/child spouse/family GEDCOM links, but Behold's problem list helped me easily fix my incorrect entries.

I am now certain that data entry in Behold will be amazing. I entered data on 117 people and I was diligent in included 173 sources for that data. (The way I decided to organize my sources is the story for a future blog post.) I estimate this would have taken me only about 5 hours if Behold version 2.0 was available.

I also found a half-dozen little things not working in the html output (e.g. some links, sorting, etc) that I will be able to fix, and then I'll work on the display of pictures, using that page as the test case.

So I'm killing two birds with one stone: furthering development of Behold while also making some genealogical progress on one of my family lines. This couldn't be more exciting!

Is web hosting with dedicated (static) IP address better than having a shared IP address for your website? Due to the rapid increase of the number of registered domain names and the finite number of IP addresses, web hosting providers are forced to use shared IP's when possible.
