Celebrating NOOKA: "Designing Time" Book

The work of long-time Core77-fave NOOKA—founded by Matthew Waldman—is the subject of a newly-released book, Designing Time, a lavish and time-travel-y chronicle of the brand's evolution and its efforts to make us rethink how we perceive the formal intersection of time and design.

"The Future Should Not Look Like the Past" offers a deep dive into NOOKA's journey, from its inception to its impact on the design landscape. Established in the late 1990s, NOOKA was a pioneer in creating timepieces that employed a unique visual language, "making the concept of time more intuitive and accessible." The brand's partnership with Seiko marked the beginning of a new era in watch design, introducing passive intelligent interfaces that enriched the user experience.

With ambitions ahead of their time, Waldman's vision was "to promote a universal language through design that transcends cultural and geopolitical boundaries." He created a shorthand for the concept—Mindstyle—which "merges interface design with lifestyle aspirations, aiming to foster a better future."

Inside the Book

Spanning 200+ pages, Designing Time is an absolute treasure trove for design enthusiasts, and an incredible pleasure to meander through. It features an array of content—including sketches, renders, and photographs—accompanied by inside stories and process images of unrealized projects. (Always some of the most ambitious!) The book not only highlights NOOKA's groundbreaking products (such as the iconic STRIP belt and futuristic sunglasses), but also delves into the brand's cultural impact during the 2000s. Anyone in the design world at that time will be taking a very enjoyable trip down memory lane with this thing.

Launched on Kickstarter Japan in 2022, the book quickly reached its funding goal, reflecting the enduring interest in NOOKA's innovative approach. The first print run sold out, and a second edition [Hard cover only] is set to ship in November 2024, so more of us will be able to get ouir hands on one.

November Book Club | The Palace of Eros (November 14, 2024 6:00pm)

Event Begins: Thursday, November 14, 2024 6:00pm
Location: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology
Organized By: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology

Attend the November session of our monthly Kelsey Book Club! This event is open to all adults who have an interest in fiction, mythology, and the ancient world. Learn more about this program at https://myumi.ch/Drn1Q.

This month, we are reading *The Palace of Eros* by Caro De Robertis. A recent release, the novel was featured in *Electric Literature*’s “65 Queer Books You Need to Read in Summer 2024.” The Palace of Eros reimagines the Greek myth of Psyche and Eros through a feminist and queer lens. Psyche—pursued by many but longing for freedom—is tied to a rock as a sacrifice to appease Aphrodite. But rather than meeting destruction, she is saved by the nonbinary deity of desire Eros, who whisks her away to a hidden palace safe from the eyes and authority of Olympus. As Psyche and Eros fall in love, their relationship is tested by the complexities of secrecy, freedom, and desire—and met with transformative consequences.

Join us in Room 125 of Newberry Hall for an evening of community and conversation led by Gabriel Key, a PhD candidate in the Interdepartmental Program in Ancient Mediterranean Art and Archaeology. Light refreshments will be served.

*Note: Registration for this session is now closed. Visit our book club web page to learn about future meetings: https://myumi.ch/Drn1Q.*

OSCE/ODIHR publishes handbook on follow-up to election observation recommendations

The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) on 6 June 2016 released a publication to assist OSCE participating States in better following up on recommendations from final reports by election observation missions.

The Handbook on the Follow-up of Electoral Recommendations – the first tool of its kind for the OSCE region – outlines the key issues when developing and implementing electoral legislation and practice, based on ODIHR’s election observation missions, in line with OSCE commitments and international standards.

"With this handbook, we hope to establish a more systematic approach to follow-up to election observation activities, that is clearer and more consistent and, at the same time, puts emphasis on the implementation of recommendations," said Michael Georg Link, Director of ODIHR. "This handbook can serve as a practical guide for ODIHR in supporting interested participating States in their efforts to follow up on electoral recommendations."

The handbook combines explanations of technical aspects related to follow-up activities with examples of ways ODIHR can help participating States in improving their electoral legislation and processes.

ODIHR developed the handbook as part of its continued efforts to improve its methodology and to increase professionalism in its election observation activities.  All OSCE participating States have committed themselves to promptly follow up on ODIHR election assessments and recommendations.

Help me remember the title of a book

I'm trying to remember the title of a book that, realistically, I probably read about somewhere here on MeFi. It's post-apocalyptic, I believe it was written by a female author.

The plot summary, as I remember it: Humanity has ruined/is in the process of ruining the environment, and so an unknown entity releases a virus(?) that makes everyone infertile. As a result, an unknown entity puts together a system of cameras, computers, etc. that will record the last days of humanity for posterity. The book is comprised of chapters about the last human on earth (female, named Sarah?), as well as flashbacks of when the world was circling the drain. There are also additional chapters that are written from the point of view of the AI(?) that is compiling the data of the last human on earth. The last human on earth is not happy about her situation, and destroys the drones and cameras that are recording her last moments.

Maybe the cover was blue?

Thanks in advance!

book

Does this book exist?

So, in a recent question, someone used ChatGPT to identify someone's 'remember this book' and I thought 'huh, I wonder if ChatGPT can identify my so-far-unsolved remember this book?' So I threw in the text from my previous Ask and ChatGPT came up with a plausible sounding response -- "The Road to Rio: A Journey Across the Americas" by Australian journalist and author, John A. Lee -- but now I can't find any evidence that that person or that book exists. Is it a hallucination or can you help me find it?

Here's the full text of the ChatGPT response:

It sounds like you're recalling "The Road to Rio: A Journey Across the Americas" by Australian journalist and author, John A. Lee. The book is a travelogue that covers Lee's hitchhiking journey across both North and South America, in the post-World War II era. While the exact dates are not always clear, the references to events like the opening of the Alaska Highway strongly suggest a timeframe that fits the 1940s, with a focus on the era immediately following the war. The connection to Prince George, British Columbia, in the narrative also helps to date the book as being closely tied to the time when the Alaska Highway was opened, which makes sense given the events you've described.

As for the mention of a dog and the author's travels through various parts of the Americas, including the Darien Gap and eventually reaching Brazil, this sounds like it aligns with the broader scope of Lee's journey and the adventures he experienced during his time on the road.

This book, while not as widely known today, was quite popular when it was first published and is still cherished by those interested in mid-20th-century travel writing, particularly for its unique perspective from an Australian author exploring the Americas. Your memory of finding it at the University and its plain orange binding might indicate it was a reprint or an edition from the 1950s or 60s. Does this sound like the book you're thinking of?

When I asked it where I could find the book, it told me that it might have been wrong and just gave me general ideas for searching. I tried WorldCat and couldn't find it. Can you? Or is ChatGPT wrong?

M4 Max MacBook Pro: Real-World Usage Tests

Apple last week replaced the M3 Max MacBook Pro with the new M4 Max ‌MacBook Pro‌, and we picked up one of the new high-end ‌MacBook Pro‌ machines to see how it compares to the prior model with both benchmarks and real-world tests.

We tested an M4 Max with a 16-core CPU, 40-core GPU, and 48GB RAM against an M3 Max ‌MacBook Pro‌ with similar specs. The two machines look similar, but the display on the M4 version did get some improvements and it's a little bit brighter. There's an option for nano-texture too, which makes a big difference if you ever work outside.

Thunderbolt 5 ports instead of Thunderbolt 4 ports allow you to connect more displays (up to three 6K displays) and get faster transfer speeds. Unsurprisingly, the M4 Max performed better across the board on benchmarks, and those higher numbers did indeed translate to actual improvements in day-to-day performance.

Creating a slow motion clip from a standard clip in Topaz Labs AI took the M3 Max ‌MacBook Pro‌ a little over six minutes, while the M4 Max ‌MacBook Pro‌ was done in under five minutes.

Exporting a 6 minute 4K video with effects, plugins, LUTs, Roto AI masks, Motion VFX, and more from Final Cut Pro took the M3 Max 1:17, while the M4 Max did it in 1:07. It's only a 10 second savings, but that adds up with longer videos and over time.

Obviously you're not going to be upgrading to the M4 Max ‌MacBook Pro‌ if you have an M3 Max machine, but it is interesting to see the year-over-year improvements. If you have something like an M1 Pro or an M1 Max and do a lot of CPU/GPU heavy tasks, upgrading to the M4 Max could end up saving you a good amount of time.

Let us know what you think of the M4 Max ‌MacBook Pro‌'s performance in the comments below.

Volkron Checkbook: Getting Started

Volkron Checkbook is a ledger for keeping track of your bank accounts. Its Play Store link is
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.volkron.checkbook.andr...

The app is free and completely accessible. I haven't found any unlabeled buttons or other wonkiness. Well, there is one thing, but it's pretty minor. I'll mention it below.

The app's tag line is that it's simple and elegant, and this is true. In fact, the app is so simple and elegant that it's confusing when you're new to it.

When you open the app for the first time, you find Open Navigation Drawer in the top left corner, More Options in the top right corner, Default Account near the top of the screen, and New in the bottom right corner. Tapping Open Navigation Drawer lists your accounts at the top and some preferences farther down. Tapping More Options lists various search/display filters. Tapping New brings up a new transaction form.

To create an account, tap Open Navigation Drawer, then Settings, then Accounts. This brings up a screen with your existing accounts (i.e., Default Account) near the top. There's also an Add button in the top right corner. For your first account, tap Default Account, edit the name, and fill out the rest of the form. For additional accounts, tap Add and fill out the form. If you want to delete an account, tap the name of the account, then tap Delete in the top right corner. The new account screen is pretty basic, really just the account name (e.g., Checking, Savings) and the starting balance. When you're done, tap Save in the top right corner.

The next time you open the app, you find yourself on the last screen you worked on. Most likely, this is the account you moved money into or out of most recently. the name of the account is at the top, and your transactions appear as a list, with the oldest at the bottom.

To create a new transaction, tap New in the bottom right corner and fill out the transaction form. Information appears as a list: amount at the top, name of the party giving you the money or taking it from you (e.g., AT&T), Category (e.g., phone bill), number or code (e.g., check number or invoice number), date, and Notes. To the left of the amount is a minus sign, which TalkBack announces as "Switch." Tapping this symbol changes it to a plus sign, which TalkBack correctly announces. the edit boxes for Name and Category each have a button to the left for bringing up a list of names and categories you use often so you can just tap the one you want. Btw, when you install the app, it doesn't have any suggested names or categories, but each time you type a new one, it is saved for you automatically. When you finish filling out the transaction form, tap Save in the top right corner.

To work with a different account, tap Open Navigation Drawer to move to the screen with all your accounts and with a few preferences. Then tap the account you want.

This is enough to get started. The rest is easy enough to figure out.

Volkron Checkbook has a modern interface and is 99% accessible. I also like the way it displays and filters transactions on the Account and Statement screens. Unlike a similar app by Digital Life Style Solutions, Volkron doesn't have options for recurring transactions, like payday and auto bill pay, and it doesn't really let you export your files. You can back your information up as a DB file, but if you don't have a database app, you can't really do anything with that. The Play Store description for Volkron says these two features are forthcoming as premium features. When they come, the app will definitely be worth paying for.
