Effects of Description of Options on Parental Perinatal Decision-Making

Studies have found that the degree of detail with which palliative care is described and the order in which options are presented can affect end-of-life decisions. None of these studies, though, involved decisions regarding very premature infants.

Unlike other end-of-life decisions, those regarding extremely premature infants are influenced neither by the degree of detail nor order of presentation of management options. Deep-seated values embodied in the reasons given for these choices suggest why they are so robust. (Read the full article)

Change in Adoption of Electronic Health Records by US Children's Hospitals

Electronic health record (EHR) uptake by US hospitals has been slow, including among children’s hospitals. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health program, which began in 2011, offers incentives for adoption and meaningful use of EHRs.

Using an annual survey, we evaluated how children’s hospitals have progressed in EHR adoption from 2008 through the start of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health program and assessed their ability to meaningfully use EHRs. (Read the full article)

Adoption of Cardiovascular Risk Reduction Guidelines: A Cluster-Randomized Trial

Cardiovascular risk begins in childhood. New clinical guidelines established a care strategy for lowering risks. Incorporation of guidelines into routine practice lags due to barriers related to knowledge and attitudes about guidelines, as well as behaviors of practitioners, patients, and clinical systems.

This study demonstrated that a multifaceted approach including tools, education, and support for changes in practice systems can accelerate the adoption of guidelines during routine pediatric well-child visits, compared with dissemination of the guidelines alone. (Read the full article)

New Rapid Adoption Kit (RAK) Enables Productive Mixed-Signal, Low Power Structural Verification

All engineers can enhance their mixed-signal low-power structural verification productivity by learning while doing with a PIEA RAK (Power Intent Export Assistant Rapid Adoption Kit). They can verify the mixed-signal chip by a generating macromodel for their analog block automatically, and run it through Conformal Low Power (CLP) to perform a low power structural check.

The power structure integrity of a mixed-signal, low-power block is verified via Conformal Low Power integrated into the Virtuoso Schematic Editor Power Intent Export Assistant (VSE-PIEA). Here is the flow.

Applying the flow iteratively from lower to higher levels can verify the power structure.

Cadence customers can learn more in a Rapid Adoption Kit (RAK) titled IC 6.1.5 Virtuoso Schematic Editor XL PIEA, Conformal Low Power: Mixed-Signal Low Power Structural Verification.

The RAK includes Rapid Adoption Kit with demo design (instructions are provided on how to setup the user environment). It Introduces the Power Intent Export Assistant (PIEA) feature that has been implemented in the Virtuoso IC615 release.  The power intent extracted is then verified by calling Conformal Low Power (CLP) inside the Virtuoso environment.

  • Last Update: 11/15/2012.
  • Validated with IC 6.1.5 and CLP 11.1

The RAK uses a sample test case to go through PIEA + CLP flow as follows:

  • Setup for PIEA
  • Perform power intent extraction
  • CPF Import: It is recommended to Import macro CPF, as oppose to designing CPF for sub-blocks. If you choose to import design CPF files please make sure the design CPF file has power domain information for all the top level boundary ports
  • Generate macro CPF and design CPF
  • Perform low power verification by running CLP

It is also recommended to go through older RAKs as prerequisites.

  • Conformal Low Power, RTL Compiler and Incisive: Low Power Verification for Beginners
  • Conformal Low Power: CPF Macro Models
  • Conformal Low Power and RTL Compiler: Low Power Verification for Advanced Users

A Key to the Future: Utilities’ Vital Role in Widespread Adoption of Geothermal Heat Pumps

Utilities are a natural partner for the geothermal heat pump (GHP) industry. Why? Because utilities have a broad consumer base and infrastructure, and need to both build load (sales) and levelize that demand to make the most efficient use of their electrical generation capacity throughout the year.  GHPs are a technology that fills that niche.
