A component for a gas turbine engine including a gas path wall having a first surface and a second surface. A cooling hole extends through the gas path wall from an inlet in the first surface through a transition to an outlet in the second surface. Cusps are formed on the transition.

In a method of reducing pollutants of a combustion engine, exhaust gas, generated by a cylinder of the combustion engine, is fed to an exhaust gas aftertreatment system as a function of a predefined condition solely via a first exhaust channel which communicates with a first one of first and second exhaust valves of the cylinder. The first exhaust channel is hereby coated, at least in part, by a thermally insulating layer selected such that a heat input is transmitted to the exhaust gas aftertreatment system which heat input is greater than a heat input in a second exhaust channel communicating with a second one of the first and second exhaust valves. The predefined condition is defined as a function of a coolant temperature of the combustion engine.

An exhaust apparatus for a diesel engine rapidly burns an unburned deposit in an upstream exhaust catalyst with heat of a heater. The exhaust apparatus includes a downstream exhaust cleaner, an upstream exhaust catalyst provided in an exhaust passage, upstream of the downstream exhaust cleaner, a heater disposed at an exhaust inlet of the upstream exhaust catalyst, and an engine starter apparatus. A control unit controls the power supply to the heater and an engine start process is performed by the engine starter apparatus. A start command unit is connected to the control unit. When the engine has been stopped and then the start command unit gives the control unit a start command, the control unit powers the heater without performing an engine start process, thereby keeping the engine stopped for a predetermined period of time after the start command has been given, and subsequently performing the engine start process.

A controller is provided, which detects operating conditions of an internal combustion engine on the basis of detection results from a group of sensors and drives an actuator that modifies an opening position of a wastegate valve on the basis of the operating conditions. When driving the wastegate valve to a fully closed opening, the controller initially drives the actuator toward a preset provisional fully closed position, and after determining on the basis of a detection result from a position sensor that an actual opening of the wastegate valve has reached the provisional fully closed opening, switches a target opening to the fully closed opening and drives the actuator accordingly.

A required opening correction amount is calculated based on a target supercharging pressure and an actual supercharging pressure, a target opening is calculated based on a required opening and the required opening correction amount, an actual operating position of a wastegate valve is determined to correspond to a fully closed position when the wastegate valve is in a fully closed condition, an actual opening of the wastegate valve is calculated based on the fully closed position and the actual operating position, an operation amount of an actuator for aligning the target opening with the actual opening is calculated based on the target opening and the actual opening, and when the target opening corresponds to the fully closed condition and the actual operating position is not decreased at or above a prescribed rate, the fully closed position is updated to the actual operating position.

An assistance device for an aircraft free-turbine turbine engine, the device including first electrical power supply for powering a winding of a starter rotary machine, referred to as a “first” winding, in order to provide first assistance in accelerating the gas generator of the engine. The device further includes a monitor for monitoring the first assistance, and a second power supply for electrically powering a second winding of the rotary machine to provide second assistance in accelerating the gas generator if the monitor observes that the first assistance is insufficient.

A gas turbine engine duct turns radially inwardly in the downstream direction. The duct includes a plurality of radially extending stator vanes. A generally circumferentially extending splitter vane is provided between two circumferentially neighbouring stator vanes. The splitter vane improves the flow near to the radially inner wall of the duct. This can allow greater design freedom in the duct geometry.

The invention is in the field of engine building technology and may be used in space technology or aviation. Liquid-propellant rockets with Laval nozzles are well known, and they have the following insufficiencies: (1) high fuel consumption rates, which lead to increased dimensions and engine weight and boosters; (2) a relatively low combustion efficiency, because the low mass of the combustion products are emitted into the environment; (3) the large length of the de Laval nozzles with increased expansion ratios increase the dimensions and the engine weight; (4) use of high temperature rocket propellants—combustion products—in the camera and de Laval nozzle. These insufficiencies suppress using liquid-propellant rockets in space technology. The goal of the invention is decreasing the influence of these insufficiencies and obtaining an engine with improved efficiency. The goal is achieved with the creation of an engine with the subsonic discharge of combustion products and the creation of a simple nozzle construction.

A gas turbine engine includes a combustion section arranged between a compressor section and a turbine section that extend in an axial direction. A fan section is arranged upstream from the compressor section. An airfoil is arranged in one of the fan section, the compressor section and the turbine section. The airfoil includes pressure and suction sides extending in a radial direction from a 0% span position at an inner flow path location to a 100% span position at an airfoil tip. The airfoil has a leading edge that is projected onto a plane from various views and the plane is perpendicular to a viewing direction which corresponds to the various views. The plane is parallel with the axial direction in a 0° view. The various views include the 0° view which projects into an axial plane in the axial direction. A 90° view projects into a tangential plane in a tangential direction normal to the axial direction and views between the 0° and 90° views. The airfoil has a maximum leading edge projection in a 20° to 40° view. The radial direction is normal to the axial and tangential directions.

A turbofan engine assembly includes a core gas turbine engine with a booster compressor having a radially outer diameter, a fan case assembly, and an outlet guide vane assembly. The outlet guide vane assembly includes a plurality of outlet guide vane segments spaced circumferentially about the core gas turbine engine. Each outlet guide vane segment of the plurality of outlet guide vane segments includes a radially inner fan hub frame flange configured to couple to the core gas turbine engine, a radially outer fan case flange configured to couple to the fan case assembly, and a plurality of outlet guide vanes extending therebetween. The radially inner diameter of the outlet guide vane assembly is smaller than the radially outer diameter of the booster compressor.

A novel process for activating available compressors in multiple compressor air conditioning systems, using an Optimum Stage-Up Process. This process is programmed into a controller as an algorithm, to provide a process for fast compressor start. This process shortens the time to initiate operation of compressors in a multi-compressor air conditioning system required to meet the demand call under any load condition, and hence shortens the time required for the actual sensed interior region air temperature to reach the interior region temperature set point. The Optimum Stage-up Algorithm estimates the number of compressor stages or steps that must be initiated, based on sensed or measured values, to meet the demand at any load condition. These measured values include the sensed temperature of the interior region being cooled, which is compared to the temperature set point of this interior region as well as measured mixed air temperature and supply air temperature.

A charge air cooler for an internal combustion engine, includes a charge air inlet and a charge air outlet which are fluidly connected with each other via multiple charge air channels which are arranged parallel to each other and arranged parallel to each other and subjectable to a coolant flow; and at least one flow guide element arranged upstream of the charge air channels, wherein the flow guide element at least in one operating state of the internal combustion engine deflects charge air entering through the charge air inlet the direction of a condensate accumulation volume of the charge air cooler.

A system for adaptive cooling and energy harvesting comprising at least one thermoelectric device capable of acting as a thermoelectric cooler and as a thermoelectric generator, a hierarchical multiple-level control system, and electronics controlled by the control system and connected to the thermoelectric device. The electronics selectively configure the thermoelectric device in at least in a thermoelectric cooler operating mode and in a thermoelectric generation operating mode. The thermoelectric device can incorporate quantum-process and quantum-well materials for higher heat transfer and thermoelectric generation efficiencies. The invention provides for thermoelectric devices to additionally operate in temperature sensing mode. The hierarchical control system can comprise a plurality of control system, each of which can operate in isolation and can be interconnected with additional subsystems associated with other hierarchical levels. The hierarchical control system can comprise linear (additive) control, bilinear (additive and multiplicative) control, nonlinear control, and hysteresis.

It is interesting that the Greek Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras, summons the very real fact his nation invented democracy to bolster his government’s argument for a favourable solution to the debt crisis wracking its citizens.

Charlie says his love of Broadway provides the inspiration for his arrangements, which range from classic Benny Goodman to a Frank Sinatra-style cover of Still Alive from Portal. Grace and Charlie performed together as part of The Late Show Band, and their energy just clicked. Grace has been a special guest for many of the 8-Bit Big Band's concerts. "Our best musicians in the jazz tradition were radical imaginers," Samora Pinderhughes says. A pianist and composer in his mid-20s, he has asserted his connection to that lineage with The Transformations Suite , an earnest and ambitious new work combining music, words and visuals. The piece, which took five years to chisel into shape, was inspired by African-American resistance and protest movements, as well as the oppression that many still endure. Pinderhughes now lives in Harlem, but he grew up in the Bay Area, in a family of academics and social activists. Shortly after releasing The Transformations Suite last fall, he brought the project to the Way Christian Center in Berkeley for a performance that was several things at once: a homecoming, an album-release concert, a rousing community gathering. Along with a group of smart young jazz musicians, the ensemble features spoken-word poetry by the accomplished actor Jeremie Harris and passages of soulful singing by Jehbreal Jackson.
