The Geiko Tomitsuyuu enjoying the peace and serenity of the quiet temple room. She thinks of her music and her dance. The scene is like a fairy tale, the Heron Maiden...

Serum Tocopherol Levels in Very Preterm Infants After a Single Dose of Vitamin E at Birth

Preterm infants are born with low serum levels and low body stores of tocopherol. Serum levels ≥0.5 mg/dL are required for protection against lipid peroxidation. Previous studies have shown good intestinal absorption of vitamin E given intragastrically to preterm infants.

Serum α-tocopherol increases after a single 50-IU/kg dose of vitamin E as dl-α-tocopheryl acetate given intragastrically to very preterm infants soon after birth; however, 30% of infants still have serum α-tocopherol level <0.5 mg/dL 24 hours after dosing. (Read the full article)

Dietary Fats and Atherosclerosis From Childhood to Adulthood

BACKGROUND:

The association of dietary fat distribution with markers of subclinical atherosclerosis during early life is unknown. We examined whether success in achieving the main target of an infancy-onset dietary intervention based on the distribution of dietary fat was associated with aortic and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and distensibility from childhood to young adulthood.

METHODS:

In the prospective randomized controlled Special Turku Coronary Risk Factor Intervention Project trial, personalized dietary counseling was given biannually to healthy children from infancy to young adulthood. The counseling was based on Nordic Nutrition Recommendations, with the main aim of improving the distribution of dietary fat in children’s diets. IMT and distensibility of the abdominal aorta and common carotid artery were measured repeatedly at ages 11 (n = 439), 13 (n = 499), 15 (n = 506), 17 (n = 477), and 19 years (n = 429). The targeted distribution of dietary fat was defined as a ratio of saturated fatty acids to monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids of <1:2 and as an intake of saturated fatty acids of <10% of energy intake. Participants who met ≥1 of these 2 criteria were defined to achieve the main intervention target.

RESULTS:

Individuals who achieved the main intervention target had lower aortic IMT (age- and sex-adjusted mean difference 10.4 µm; 95% confidence interval: 0.3 to 20.5 µm) and better aortic distensibility (0.13% per 10 mm Hg; 95% confidence interval: 0.00% to 0.26% per10 mm Hg) compared with their peers who did not meet the target.

CONCLUSIONS:

Achieving the main target of an infancy-onset dietary intervention, reflecting dietary guidelines, was favorably associated with aortic IMT and distensibility during the early life course. These data support the recommendation of favoring unsaturated fat to enhance arterial health.

One Hero at a Time: Update on Delaware’s Challenge to House Homeless Veterans

On any given night, 100 Veterans in Delaware are homeless. For seven years, Henry Smith was one of them. An honorably discharged Veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Smith lived off and on in rooming houses and in 2015 was referred by the Wilmington VA Medical Center to Connections’ VA-funded Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program. SSVF provides a range of supportive services and assistance to help Veterans secure housing stability. He entered the program on November 5, 2015 and was housed on December 3. “After being homeless for seven years, I thought housing was impossible,” said Mr. Smith. “My apartment is quiet, clean, and well-kept. Connections worked hard to establish a rapport with the landlord, and I hope more vets get the opportunity to be housed.”

Tales from DAC: Altair's HERO Is Your Hero

Emulators are great. They vastly speed up verification to the point where it’s hard to imagine life without them; as designs grow in complexity, simple simulation can’t keep up for the biggest designs. The extra oomph from emulation is almost a necessity for the top percentages of design sizes. However, many users of Palladium aren’t efficiently using their unit’s processing power, and as a result they’re missing out on the full speed-up potential that Palladium can provide.

Altair’s HERO is here for you. With its help, your Palladium unit can be even more amazing for your productivity than before.

HERO (that’s Hardware Emulator Resource Optimizer) adds emulator support to Altair’s Accelerator. You already know and love Altair’s scheduling tools; so why not make them do more for you, so you can be one of those people who are making the most out of their Palladium system?

Emulators are kind of like big computers, but it’s a lot harder to manage leftover resources on an emulator than it is on, say, a CPU. A scheduler like HERO neatly sidesteps this problem by more intelligently using the resources available to ensure that there’s a minimal patchwork of leftover resources to begin with.

HERO supports past generations of Palladium as well, so if you’re still using an older version, you can still take advantage of the upgrades HERO provides. There’s a wide variety of features HERO has that make your emulator easier to use. HERO separates a job into a “select” section and a “run” section: the “select” part makes a last-minute decision on which domains or boards to use, while the “run” part is the actual job. This makes it easier to ensure that your Palladium emulator is being used as efficiently as possible. Jobs are placed using “shapes”, which are a set of job types; these can be selected from a list of pre-defined ones by the user. Shapes can have special constraints if those are needed.

A new reservation system also helps HERO organize Palladium’s processing power better. HERO offers both “hard” reservations and “soft” reservations. A hard reservation locks other users out of reserving any part of the emulator at all, while a soft reservation allows a user to reserve a part of the emulator for a later use. Think of it like this: a soft reservation is like grabbing a ticket from the deli counter, while a hard reservation stops you from ever entering the market.

When using HERO, you can manage your entire verification workload. You’ll find that your utilization of your emulator vastly increases—it’s been reported that some users using only 30% of the capabilities of their Palladium unit(s) saw a massive increase to over 90% once they made the switch to HERO.

If you’re ready to take your Palladium productivity to the next level, Altair has a HERO for you.
