The Korean scholar-bureaucrats (yangban) have been drawing public attention among Japanese intellectuals since the beginning of the 20th century. This lecture reviews how Japanese magazines represented yangban, tracing how their image changed from the evil noblemen that kept Korean society stagnant to the graceful embodiers of vanishing authentic Korean culture. Both these images, and even the transition from one to the other, were driven by a Japanese version of orientalism.

Shimpei Cole Ota is a sociocultural anthropologist trained both in Seoul National University (ABD, 2003) and Osaka University (Ph.D., 2007). His basic question focuses on what brings drastic changes to societies and cultures, especially before and after modernization, liberalization, and globalization in South Korea and Korean America.

Berlin/Vienna, 3 July 2016 – OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Secretary General Lamberto Zannier today expressed deep sadness upon the passing of Holocaust survivor, peace activist and Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel.

“We have lost one of the strongest advocates of peace, who raised his voice tirelessly against all forms of hatred. He fought intolerance and in all its manifestations and denounced oppression wherever it occurred”, said Steinmeier.

Zannier stressed: “In a time when racism, xenophobia and intolerance threaten increasingly divided societies across the OSCE region, Elie Wiesel’s legacy will remain an inspiration and forever remind us of our commitment never to relent in our fight against all forms of discrimination, racism and violent extremism.”

Steinmeier and Zannier extended their condolences to Mr. Wiesel's family and to the governments and people of the United States and Israel.

The growth of cybercrime will cost the global economy more than $2 trillion by 2019, according to the Better Business Bureau’s 2017 State of Cybersecurity Among Small Businesses in North America report.

(Belga) Un Américain, qui avait été immortalisé les pieds sur une table dans le bureau de la cheffe démocrate Nancy Pelosi lors de l'assaut sur le Capitole, a été reconnu coupable lundi de plusieurs délits.

Après une courte délibération, les jurés ont déclaré Richard Barnett, 62 ans, coupable, entre autres, d'entrave à une procédure officielle, vol et intrusion dans un bâtiment officiel avec une arme dangereuse (un bâton de marche capable d'envoyer des décharges électriques). Le 6 janvier 2021, il avait envahi, comme des centaines de partisans de l'ex-président républicain Donald Trump, le siège du Congrès au moment où les élus certifiaient la victoire du démocrate Joe Biden à la présidentielle. Il avait été photographié par l'AFP dans le bureau de la cheffe de la chambre des représentants, Nancy Pelosi, les pieds sur un meuble. Le cliché avait fait le tour du monde et permis à la police de l'interpeller rapidement. Selon le dossier d'accusation, ce partisan de la mouvance complotiste Qanon avait laissé un message insultant à la démocrate et volé une enveloppe qu'elle avait signée. Pendant son procès, il s'était montré défiant, assurant avoir été "poussé à l'intérieur" du Capitole par la foule. Sa peine sera prononcée en mai. En attendant, il reste assigné à résidence avec un bracelet électronique. The synthesis of a chiral isothiourea, namely, (4aR,8aR)-3-phenyl-4a,5,6,7,8,8a-hexahydrobenzo[4,5]imidazo[2,1-b]thiazol-9-ium bromide, C15H17N2S+·Br−, with potential organocatalytic and anti-inflammatory activity is reported. The preparation of the heterocycle of interest was carried out in two high-yielding steps. The hydrobromide salt of the isothiourea of interest provided suitable crystals for X-ray diffraction analysis, the results of which are reported. Salient observations from this analysis are the near perpendicular arrangement of the phenyl ring and the mean plane of the heterocycle. This conformational characteristic may be relevant with regard the stereoselectivity induced by the chiral isothiourea in asymmetric reactions. Furthermore, evidence was found for the existence of an S...Br− halogen bond.

In the title compound, [Cu2(L)2]·2CH2Cl2, the CuII ions coordinate two (S,O)-chelating aroyl­thio­urea moieties of doubly deprotonated furan-2,5-di­carbonyl­bis­(N,N-di­ethyl­thio­urea) (H2L) ligands. The coordination geometry of the metal centers is best described as a flat isosceles trapezoid with a cis arrangement of the donor atoms.

Reaction between equimolar amounts of 3,3,3',3'-tetraethyl-1,1'-(furan-2,5-dicarbonyl)bis(thiourea) (H2L) and CuCl2·2H2O in methanol in the presence of the supporting base Et3N gave rise to a neutral dinuclear complex bis[μ-3,3,3',3'-tetraethyl-1,1'-(furan-2,5-dicarbonyl)bis(thioureato)]dicopper(II) dichloromethane disolvate, [Cu2(C16H22N4O3S2)2]·2CH2Cl2 or [Cu2(L)2]·2CH2Cl2. The aroylbis(thioureas) are doubly deprotonated and the resulting anions {L2–} bond to metal ions through (S,O)-chelating moieties. The copper atoms adopt a virtually cis-square-planar environment. In the crystal, adjacent [Cu2(L)2]·2CH2Cl2 units are linked into polymeric chains along the a-axis direction by intermolecular coordinative Cu...S interactions. The co-crystallized solvent molecules play a vital role in the crystal packing. In particular, weak C—Hfuran...Cl and C—Hethyl...Cl contacts consolidate the three-dimensional supramolecular architecture.

The synthesis and crystallographic analysis of the title compound, C9H9N3O2S, are reported. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c, revealing characteristic bond lengths and angles typical of thio­semicarbazone groups. The supra­molecular organization primarily arises from hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking inter­actions, leading to distinctive dimeric formations.

The reaction of copper(II) oxalate and hexa­methyl­ene­tetra­mine in a deep eutectic solvent made of urea and choline chloride produced crystals of penta­amine­copper(II) dichloride–urea (1/1), [Cu(NH3)5]Cl2·CO(NH2)2, which was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The complex contains discrete penta­amine­copper(II) units in a square-based pyramidal geometry. The overall structure of the multi-component crystal is dictated by hydrogen bonding between urea mol­ecules and amine H atoms with chloride anions.

The chemical reaction of 4-bromo­benzoyl­chloride and 2-amino­thia­zole in the presence of potassium thio­cyanate yielded a white solid formulated as C15H10BrN3OS2, which consists of 4-bromo­benzamido and 2-benzo­thia­zolyl moieties connected by a thio­urea group. The 4-bromo­benzamido and 2-benzo­thia­zolyl moieties are in a trans conformtion (sometimes also called s-trans due to the single bond) with respect to the N—C bond. The dihedral angle between the mean planes of the 4-bromo­phenyl and the 2-benzo­thia­zolyl units is 10.45 (11)°. The thio­urea moiety, —C—NH—C(=S) —NH— fragment forms a dihedral angle of 8.64 (12)° with the 4-bromo­phenyl ring and is almost coplanar with the 2-benzo­thia­zolyl moiety, with a dihedral angle of 1.94 (11)°. The mol­ecular structure is stabilized by intra­molecular N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, resulting in the formation of an S(6) ring. In the crystal, pairs of adjacent mol­ecules inter­act via inter­molecular hydrogen bonds of type C—H⋯N, C—H⋯S and N—H⋯S, resulting in mol­ecular layers parallel to the ac plane.
