The Japanese government on Wednesday approved a grant worth $18.5 million for the construction of three embankments on the Indus River in Haripur district and rain metres at 45 sites along the river in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab for effective flood management.

In 2022, Pakistan witnessed the worst floods in its history, which claimed 1,700 lives, destroyed homes and livestock, washed away swathes of agricultural land, affected 33 million people, and incurred losses worth $30 billion, according to government estimates.

“The Government of Japan has approved a grant amounting to JPY 2.831 billion (US$ 18.5 million) for a Grant-in-Aid project titled ‘Flood Management Enhancement in the Indus Basin’ to the Government of Pakistan through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA),” a statement from the Ministry of Economic Affairs said on Wednesday.

“The project aims to improve the accuracy of flood forecasts and flood control functions, accumulate basic data that contribute to disaster risk reduction measures, and reduce the risk of loss to humans and the economy, including infrastructure.”

The three embankments constructed under the project grant will protect local communities from potential human and economic losses including infrastructure. The data from the water and rain metres, managed by the Federal Flood Commission and Water and Power Development Authority, will be shared with various agencies to help predict and manage potential floods.

“The scope of the project is to develop a hydrological and hydraulic observation network besides rehabilitating the river structures damaged by the 2022 floods in the Indus River and its tributaries,” the statement added.

Economic Affairs Secretary Dr Kazim Niaz and Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan Wada Mitsuhiro signed the agreement in Islamabad today.

Ambassador Wada, while speaking at the signing ceremony, expressed the hope that the project would provide reassurance to the people of Pakistan regarding possible future floods.

“Japan remains committed to providing assistance that will directly benefit vulnerable people of Pakistan,” the envoy said.

In Oct, Pakistan and Japan had finalised an agreement for the procurement and installation of 45 telemetry stations and five automatic weather stations for improved flood forecasting and weather monitoring systems.

The project was part of the larger Rs200bn worth of Flood Protection Programme being jointly financed by the federal and provincial governments with the support of international lenders.

Une gigantesque panne d'électricité a affecté lundi une large partie du Pakistan, dont ses plus grandes villes Lahore et Karachi, avant que les autorités n'annoncent en soirée le retour progressif du courant.

Les coupures d'électricité sont fréquentes au Pakistan, englué depuis des années dans de graves problèmes budgétaires et énergétiques, et dont le système de distribution est complexe et vétuste.

La panne a été causée par un dysfonctionnement survenu à 07H30 locales (02H30 GMT) à la suite de mesures d'économies prises sur le réseau.

"Nous espérons que le courant sera rétabli partout dans le pays d'ici ce (lundi) soir", a déclaré dans un communiqué vidéo le ministre de l'Energie, Khurram Dastagir Khan.

La nuit avançant, il a assuré sur Twitter que l'électricité commençait à être rétablie progressivement.

Le ministère a tweeté que le courant était revenu dans le centre d'Islamabad et à Gujranwala, à quelque 200 km au sud-est de la capitale.

M. Khan a également retweeté le message d'un usager qui se félicitait qu'il y ait à nouveau "de la lumière à Lahore", la deuxième ville la plus peuplée du pays, avec plus de 10 millions d'habitants.

La panne a été causée par une variation de la fréquence électrique sur le réseau national, au redémarrage des unités de production électrique lundi matin.

Ces unités sont temporairement éteintes la nuit en hiver pour économiser du carburant, a expliqué M. Khan à la presse.

"Les clients n'achètent jamais sans essayer d'abord", pestait-il. Du coup, "on est tous assis là, à ne rien faire".

Dans les écoles, les cours ont souvent eu lieu dans la pénombre, pour celles ne disposant pas d'éclairage sur batterie.

A Karachi (sud), où les températures étaient plus élevées, un commerçant a indiqué à l'AFP craindre que son stock entier de produits laitiers ne soit perdu, sans réfrigération.

Et Khurrum Khan, un imprimeur de 39 ans, voyait les commandes s'empiler, sans pouvoir y répondre. Les problèmes d'électricité sont "une malédiction permanente dont nos gouvernements n'ont pas réussi à se débarrasser", regrettait-il.

Une panne similaire en janvier 2021 avait plongé l'essentiel de ce pays de 220 millions d'habitants dans le noir pendant plusieurs heures, après qu'un dysfonctionnement technique dans le sud eut déclenché une réaction en chaîne dans plusieurs centrales électriques.

Les coupures d'électricité sont un problème récurrent au Pakistan. Mais la situation s'est encore détériorée ces derniers mois, la situation financière dramatique du pays aggravant un peu plus ses difficultés d'approvisionnement énergétique.

Aim/Purpose: The present study investigates the relationship between the five-factor model (FFM) of personality traits and sales performance in Pakistan. Background: Personality is a well-researched area in which numerous studies have examined the correlation between personality traits and job performance. In this study, a positive effect between the various dimensions of the five-factor model (extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, and open to experience) and sales performance in Pakistan is investigated. Methodology: Pearson’s correlation values as well as analysis methodologies were employed to gather descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, and use the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). Cronbach’s alpha value helped determine the internal consistency of the group items. Questionnaires were distributed among 600 salespersons in various cities of Pakistan from April 2015 to January 2016. Subsequently, 510 questionnaires were acquired for the sample. Contribution: The current study contributes to the literature on personality traits and sales performance by applying empirical evidence from sales managers in three industries of Pakistan: pharmaceutical, insurance, and electronics. Findings: The results affirmed a positive effect of the five-factor model on sales performance among various industries in Pakistan. The effect of each sub-factor from the five-factor model was examined autonomously. There is a favorable benefit to sales managers in considering FFM when making hiring decisions. Impact on Society: FFM offers important insights into personality traits that work well within Pakistani sales industry structure. Future Research: A broader rendering of the effects of FFM on sales organizations in other geographical locations around Pakistan should be considered. Additionally, an extended study should be conducted to investigate the effects of FFM on female sales employees involving religious and cultural forces within that country.

Aim/Purpose: The current study investigates the relationship between mobile and email marketing and consumer impulse buying tendencies in Pakistan. Background: Technology has become a primary driver for all business operations, which has dramatically transformed the wireless communications marketing paradigm. However, researchers have claimed that further inquiry is still needed to explore the role that distinct and emerging global technologies have on marketing communication strategies. This study explores the linkage of mobile and email marketing on consumers’ impulse buying behavior in Pakistan. Methodology: Primary data were collected through the distribution of 1000 questionnaires among students of different universities within two provinces of Pakistan: Punjab and Khyber Pakhton Khan (KPK). The study was conducted between November 2016 and March 2017. The authors received back 950 surveys, which is a very significant rate of return (95%). Of those submitted, 900 surveys were deemed eligible for analysis after improper documents were eliminated. Structure equation modeling (SEM) was utilized to test the study’s hypotheses. Contribution: This study assists organizations in improving marketing campaigns by focusing more on mobile devices (m-devices) and email medium to better comprehend consumers’ assessment processes at a lower budgetary cost. Such digital considerations could provide innovative possibilities for marketers in approaching their target market by adopting novel methods for information sharing. Findings: The findings revealed a positive association between mobile and email marketing on consumers’ impulse buying tendencies. The comprehensive analysis affirmed; however, there is a higher positive relationship of mobile marketing results compared to email marketing outcomes. There are favorable benefits in considering such emerging methods in marketing communications as promotional strategies are considered by organizations. Recommendations for Practitioners: Marketers are encouraged to evaluate the potential of using both emerging mediums to take advantage of consumer impulse buying habits where m-devices and emails approaches are utilized. Future Research: Future inquiries might examine the global influence of m-devices and email technology toward other buying tendencies of consumers: exploratory, online, variety seeking, habitual, and other emerging complex on-demand buying behavior.
