So I became obsessed with Spinning.  Not the act itself, but booking a class—  It's so popular at my gym, it fills up instantly!  An 8:30 a.m. class starts taking reservations exactly 26 hours prior—  A digital clock ticks down the seconds—

So I am now setting my alarm the day before at 6:25 a.m. so I can book a bike at exactly 6:30.

 The alarm goes off, I zip downstairs to get my phone with the gym's app, zip back up to get back into bed—  Then, with a scream, at 6:29 a.m., I realize I left my reading glasses downstairs—  The print's too tiny to see—  I sprint back down—  I'm not even in the saddle and my heart rate is up to 150!  But—

Ding!  I'm in!  At 6:31 there are two bikes left, and one is mine, mine, mine!

I arrive the next morning, amped up, even though I have no idea how to spin.  Tonya, our Amazon-like spinning instructress, approaches me.  She asks if I am wearing cycling shoes.  I do not know what those are.  No matter.  She fetches metal toe-holders that look like tiny bear traps.

I'm getting in deep.

All the arriving cyclists are very excited.  They wear cut off shirts and bike pants and backwards caps.  They're a team.  And here we go, cycling, to the B-52's Love Shack.  Tonya exhorts us to greet each other and exchange high-fives.  "Woo hoo!" everyone yells.  I've discovered a cult!  I love it!

 "Go to 70% of your max!" Tonya cries out.  "Play with your edge!"

 I ignore that and just continue at the easiest gear possible.  I'm spinning!  I sing along to the next tune: "Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand!" 

But here's the thing.  I start sweating copiously.  It's ridiculous.  It looks like there's something wrong with me.  My face is dripping, as are arms, hands.  Soon—and I am not making this up—even my bike is sweating.  It's dripping from the handle bars. Oh, the horror.

The next day, my partner shows me an article about this new exercise-induced side effect called Rhabdomyolysis.  Suffered mostly by first-time spinners, it's where overworked muscles strain your kidneys and your pee turns brown.  "I'm amazed you survived!" he said. But I wonder how my poor infected bike is doing. 
So that's it for me.  I went, I spun, I conquered.

Next up? Yoga for nappers.  Lavender pillows -- hold the toe clips.

A self-assembling gel injected at the site of spinal cord injuries in paralysed mice has enabled them to walk again after four weeks.

The gel mimics the matrix that is normally found around cells, providing a scaffold that helps cells to grow. It also provides signals that stimulate nerve regeneration.

Samuel Stupp at Northwestern University in Chicago and his colleagues created a material made of protein units, called monomers, that self-assemble into long chains, called supramolecular fibrils, in water.

When they were injected into the spinal cords of mice that were paralysed in the hind legs, these fibrils formed a gel at the injury site.

The researchers injected 76 paralysed mice with either the fibrils or a sham treatment made of salt solution, a day after the initial injury. They found that the gel enabled paralysed mice to walk by four weeks after the injection, whereas mice given the placebo didn't regain the ability to walk.

The team found that the gel helped regenerate the severed ends of neurons and reduced the amount of scar tissue at the injury site, which usually forms a barrier to regeneration. The gel also enhanced blood vessel growth, which provided more nutrients to the spinal cord cells.

Science-based university spin-offs face considerable technology and market uncertainty over extended periods of time, increasing the challenges of commercialisation. Scientist-entrepreneurs can play formative roles in commercialising lab-based scientific inventions through the formation of well-endowed university spin-offs. Through case study analysis of three science-based university spin-offs within a biotechnology innovation ecosystem, we unpack the impact of <i>pre-formation</i> intangible assets of academic scientists (research excellence, patenting, and international networks) and their entrepreneurial capabilities on spin-off performance. We find evidence that the pre-formation entrepreneurial capabilities of academic scientists can endow science-based university spin-offs by leveraging the scientists' pre-formation intangible assets. A theory-driven model depicting the role of pre-formation intangible assets and entrepreneurial capabilities in endowing science-based university spin-offs is developed. Recommendations are provided for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to more effectively commercialise high potential inventions in the university lab through the development and deployment of pre-formation intangible assets and entrepreneurial capabilities.

We extend the knowledge-based perspective to consider the impact of spin-out founders on knowledge transfer to new ventures. We argue that existing theory largely ignores the founder's role as team catalyst who mobilizes a team and transmits the team's knowledge to a new venture. We address this gap by building theory on the role of a spin-out founder as a facilitator of co-mobility, and whose impact on firm outcomes is mediated by the size and organizational experience of the recruited team. The support for our hypotheses, through use of linked employee-employer US Census data from the legal services industry, has theoretical and practical implications for the knowledge-based view and human resource strategies for both existing and entrepreneurial firms.

This paper investigates how "dual directors" enable firms that undertake corporate spinoffs to manage their post-spinoff relationships with the firms they divest, as well as the performance implications of dual directors serving simultaneously on these companies' boards. While the presence of dual directors is positively associated with the average stock market returns of parent and spinoff firms, their presence is increasingly positively associated with parent firm performance but increasingly negatively associated with spinoff firm performance as the share of sales a spinoff firm makes to its parent firm rises. These findings show that while dual directors give a parent firm power over its spinoff firm, dual directors only exercise that power at the spinoff firm's expense when that company is highly dependent on its parent firm.
