reliability Improving the reliability of small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements of anisotropic precipitates in metallic alloys using sample rotation By journals.iucr.org Published On :: 2024-11-04 Nanometric precipitates in metallic alloys often have highly anisotropic shapes. Given the large grain size and non-random texture typical of these alloys, performing small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) measurements on such samples for determining their characteristics (typically size and volume fraction) results in highly anisotropic and irreproducible data. Rotations of flat samples during SAXS/WAXS acquisitions are presented here as a solution to these anisotropy issues. Two aluminium alloys containing anisotropic precipitates are used as examples to validate the approach with a −45°/45° angular range. Clear improvements can be seen on the SAXS I(q) fitting and the consistency between the different SAXS/WAXS measurements. This methodology results in more reliable measurements of the precipitate's characteristics, and thus allows for time- and space-resolved measurements with higher accuracy. Full Article text

reliability Failures in Reliability Lead to Share Loss By strategystreet.blogspot.com Published On :: Wed, 06 Jul 2011 23:04:00 +0000 We have written several times before about the Customer Buying Hierarchy (i.e. customers buy Function, Reliability, Convenience and Price, in that order). We have also written, on several occasions, about companies winning and failing customers in a marketplace. In a stable market, failure of a supplier causes more market share to move than does another competitor’s “win” of market share against its peers. Most failures occur in Reliability. Recently, two of America’s paragon companies have failed their customers on Reliability and are now struggling to catch up. Other leaders have had a similar problem and have recovered nicely. Macy’s is a clear leader in the department store market. Over the last several years, Macy’s has purchased and integrated other large department store competitors. For example, in 2005 Macy’s purchased May Department Stores. As the company worked to integrate these acquisitions and obtain synergistic savings, their attention swerved from customer service. The company’s failings were greatest in customer interactions with the company’s sales associates. Nearly half of customer complaints focused on actions of sales associates. These are failures in Reliability. A customer expects to be well treated by a department store that charges relatively high prices for its goods. Macy’s failed to do that. The company’s market share began to drift lower as a result of these failures. Now Macys is investing a great deal more money and time into the proper training of its sales associates. This investment is beginning to pay off. A recent survey of customer satisfaction indicated that the company was making strides in improving its reputation. Still, it lags the performance of some of its important rivals. This is still a Macy’s work-in-progress. Wal-Mart is another industry paragon who drifted from its Reliability promises. Wal-Mart committed two notable sins. First, it removed some products that were important to its core customers. The company did so in an effort to improve the product mix and the margins a better product mix would bring. Some of its core customer volume began to drift away. The company also moved away from its aggressive pricing. Instead of every day low prices, the company began to promote deals on some products while raising prices on others. Customers didn’t like that either. Recently, a survey by a retail consulting firm has found that Target Stores offered prices below those of Wal-Mart. So, Wal-Mart has created Reliability failures in both product availability in its stores and its promise to have “always low prices, always.” The company’s market share has also drifted lower. Wal-Mart now promises to return to its core values and core customers. It is bringing back the products it once eliminated in favor of higher margin products. It is getting more aggressive in pricing once more. This, too, is a work-in-progress. Certainly, these leaders can recover from these miscues. We have seen other leading companies struggle with Reliability and yet recover nicely. For example, several years ago McDonald’s went through a period of time where it was losing market share. As the company examined the reasons for this market share loss, it noted that customers began to see its prices as high in the quick service restaurant industry. In addition, its products in stores had developed a reputation as being about the same as or, in some cases, lower in quality than some of its big competition. Under the leadership of a CEO well versed in operations, the company returned to its roots by emphasizing its core quality values and aggressive pricing. Today, McDonald’s is the unquestioned leader in the quick service restaurant industry. Many of its competitors struggle to keep up with McDonald’s. Most fail to do so. McDonald’s again has gained share in the industry over the last several years. McDonald’s success in reversing its Reliability failures suggests that the pathway is open for both Macy’s and Wal-Mart. They both should be able to enjoy similar success. The odds are they will. reliability Development of 18F-Fluoromisonidazole Hypoxia PET/CT Diagnostic Interpretation Criteria and Validation of Interreader Reliability, Reproducibility, and Performance By jnm.snmjournals.org Published On :: 2024-10-01T04:08:08-07:00 Tumor hypoxia, an integral biomarker to guide radiotherapy, can be imaged with 18F-fluoromisonidazole (18F-FMISO) hypoxia PET. One major obstacle to its broader application is the lack of standardized interpretation criteria. We sought to develop and validate practical interpretation criteria and a dedicated training protocol for nuclear medicine physicians to interpret 18F-FMISO hypoxia PET. Methods: We randomly selected 123 patients with human papillomavirus–positive oropharyngeal cancer enrolled in a phase II trial who underwent 123 18F-FDG PET/CT and 134 18F-FMISO PET/CT scans. Four independent nuclear medicine physicians with no 18F-FMISO experience read the scans. Interpretation by a fifth nuclear medicine physician with over 2 decades of 18F-FMISO experience was the reference standard. Performance was evaluated after initial instruction and subsequent dedicated training. Scans were considered positive for hypoxia by visual assessment if 18F-FMISO uptake was greater than floor-of-mouth uptake. Additionally, SUVmax was determined to evaluate whether quantitative assessment using tumor-to-background ratios could be helpful to define hypoxia positivity. Results: Visual assessment produced a mean sensitivity and specificity of 77.3% and 80.9%, with fair interreader agreement ( = 0.34), after initial instruction. After dedicated training, mean sensitivity and specificity improved to 97.6% and 86.9%, with almost perfect agreement ( = 0.86). Quantitative assessment with an estimated best SUVmax ratio threshold of more than 1.2 to define hypoxia positivity produced a mean sensitivity and specificity of 56.8% and 95.9%, respectively, with substantial interreader agreement ( = 0.66), after initial instruction. After dedicated training, mean sensitivity improved to 89.6% whereas mean specificity remained high at 95.3%, with near-perfect interreader agreement ( = 0.86). Conclusion: Nuclear medicine physicians without 18F-FMISO hypoxia PET reading experience demonstrate much improved interreader agreement with dedicated training using specific interpretation criteria. reliability How Do You Ensure the Reliability of Your Design in Virtuoso Studio? By community.cadence.com Published On :: Mon, 03 Jun 2024 06:56:00 GMT Designers have long recognized the need to analyze the reliability of ICs. Two commonly used approaches for performing reliability analysis include calculating the change in device degradation and relying on safe operating checks in circuit simulators. With the advent of the ever-increasing use of ICs in mission-critical applications, the need for reliable reliability analysis has become of paramount importance. Over the years, you have been using reliability analysis in Virtuoso ADE Assembler and Virtuoso ADE Explorer to measure and review aging effects, such as device characteristic degradations, model parameter changes, self-heating effects, and so on. Reliability analysis can be performed using two modes: Spectre native and RelXpert. The reliability analysis analyzes the effect of time on circuit performance drift and predicts the reliability of designs in terms of performance. In ADE Assembler, you can run the reliability simulation for fresh test (when time is zero), stress test (to generate degradation data), and aged test (at specific intervals, such as one year, three years, or 10 years). In the stress test, extreme environmental conditions are used to stress devices before aging analysis. The following figure shows the reliability simulation flow. The Reliability Options form has the following four tabs: Basic: Enables you to specify analysis type, aging options, start and stop time of reliability simulation, and options related to device masking, degradation ratio, and lifetime calculation. Modeling: Enables you to choose the modeling type you want to use during reliability simulation. Degradation: Enables you to specify the options to print device and subcircuit degradation information into a .bt0 file. Output: Enables you to specify the degradation reports to be generated and methods to filter degradation results in the reports. While the Basic and the Output tabs are used by design engineers, the Modeling and the Degradation tabs are primarily used by model developers. Reviewing degradation reports in text or XML formats can be a tiresome exercise because degradation data can be large and can contain a large number of instances due to advanced technology nodes and post-layout simulations. For you to work effectively and interactively with these reports, the new reliability report is based on the SQLite database, which adds the benefit of improved performance and capabilities of sorting and filtering reliability data using SQLite operators. As they say, watching this in action might help you more than reading about it, so please take a look at our Training Bytes video channel, which offers many helpful videos on how to run Reliability Analysis in Virtuoso Studio. reliability Reliability estimation in a multicomponent stress-strength model for Burr XII distribution under progressive censoring By projecteuclid.org Published On :: Mon, 04 May 2020 04:00 EDT Raj Kamal Maurya, Yogesh Mani Tripathi. Source: Brazilian Journal of Probability and Statistics, Volume 34, Number 2, 345--369.Abstract: We consider estimation of the multicomponent stress-strength reliability under progressive Type II censoring under the assumption that stress and strength variables follow Burr XII distributions with a common shape parameter. Maximum likelihood estimates of the reliability are obtained along with asymptotic intervals when common shape parameter may be known or unknown. Bayes estimates are also derived under the squared error loss function using different approximation methods. Further, we obtain exact Bayes and uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimates of the reliability for the case common shape parameter is known. The highest posterior density intervals are also obtained. We perform Monte Carlo simulations to compare the performance of proposed estimates and present a discussion based on this study. Finally, two real data sets are analyzed for illustration purposes. Full Article
reliability The Correlation of Neuronal Signals with Behavior at Different Levels of Visual Cortex and Their Relative Reliability for Behavioral Decisions By www.jneurosci.org Published On :: 2020-05-06T09:30:22-07:00 Behavior can be guided by neuronal activity in visual, auditory, or somatosensory cerebral cortex, depending on task requirements. In contrast to this flexible access of cortical signals, several observations suggest that behaviors depend more on neurons in later areas of visual cortex than those in earlier areas, although neurons in earlier areas would provide more reliable signals for many tasks. We recorded from neurons in different levels of visual cortex of 2 male rhesus monkeys while the animals did a visual discrimination task and examined trial-to-trial correlations between neuronal and behavioral responses. These correlations became stronger in primary visual cortex as neuronal signals in that area became more reliable relative to the other areas. The results suggest that the mechanisms that read signals from cortex might access any cortical area depending on the relative value of those signals for the task at hand. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Information is encoded by the action potentials of neurons in various cortical areas in a hierarchical manner such that increasingly complex stimulus features are encoded in successive stages. The brain must extract information from the response of appropriate neurons to drive optimal behavior. A widely held view of this decoding process is that the brain relies on the output of later cortical areas to make decisions, although neurons in earlier areas can provide more reliable signals. We examined correlations between perceptual decisions and the responses of neurons in different levels of monkey visual cortex. The results suggest that the brain may access signals in any cortical area depending on the relative value of those signals for the task at hand. Full Article
