osi The RNC in Tampa is closing out By www.scpr.org Published On :: Thu, 30 Aug 2012 16:02:42 -0700 Larry Mantle interviews Tom Brokaw at the 2012 Republican National Convention.; Credit: Lauren Osen/KPCC Larry MantleOur trip to the RNC in Tampa is coming to a close, but we’ve spent time with so many interesting people that our memories will stay strong. We hope you’ve enjoyed the photos, tweets, and blog postings that have expanded our coverage beyond what we provide live on the air two hours a day. This is the first political convention where KPCC has used multiple ways of bringing you here without time off from work or having to take a plane ride. There are many great stories to tell and people to share. We trust our photos give you a more complete sense of how much goes on at a massive convention like this. For KPCC journalists, it’s particularly exciting to interact with you in these new ways. We welcome your tweets and retweets (@AirTalk), comments on our blog postings (www.kpcc.org/blogs/politics), and feedback on our “AirTalk” segment pages. All this helps create a real-time way to connect listeners and users of social media in one big conversation. We hope you enjoy taking part in the convention with us, as much we enjoy sharing it with you. This content is from Southern California Public Radio. View the original story at SCPR.org. Full Article
osi It was a remarkable show of listener generosity and commitment By www.scpr.org Published On :: Wed, 14 Nov 2012 14:45:17 -0800 Larry MantleHis expression said it all. KPCC Director of On-Air Fundraising Rob Risko walked into my studio about 10:45 a.m. to update me on where we stood with our Fall member drive. I knew we had a $10,000 challenge that had started first thing in the morning, but didn't have any idea how far behind we had fallen in reaching the required 1,000 member threshold. Rob gave it to me straight -- we had to attract well over 500 members during "AirTalk" to meet the challenge. I knew that was nearly impossible during a full two-hour show, let alone one that would be significantly pre-empted by the President's news conference. Regardless, I knew we had to do our best and hope our listeners would contribute in a record-setting way. Boy, did they. We didn't start our show until 11:25 a.m., following the news conference. Right off the bat the phones started ringing and the KPCC website starting humming. The volume of member contributions stayed high with only a few exceptions. There were times we could barely keep track of how many members were coming in. It was one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences I've had in all my years hosting "AirTalk." I've been on a high all afternoon thinking about how commited our listeners are to the mission of KPCC. You've made me very happy, and very proud of our audience. Thank you for a wonderful show of support. I will long remember this day. By the way, we set a fundraising record for "AirTalk" with today's show. We're still tallying it all up. I'll have the totals for you tomorrow morning at 11. This content is from Southern California Public Radio. View the original story at SCPR.org. Full Article

osi Institutional Repositories: Asset or Obstacle? By www.ukoln.ac.uk Published On :: Wed, 23 Jul 2008 13:30:00 GMT The Institutional Repository (IR) had a meteoric rise to fame. In a brief blaze of glory, it was heralded as the facilitator of a free exchange of information within the academic research community - a faster, cheaper and more effective way to conduct scholarly communications in the twenty-first century. Then, just as quickly, fame changed to infamy. The technology, the ownership, and the very ideal of the IR has been called into question by many and varied voices in the wider academic community and beyond. I would like to explore the really controversial aspects of the IR, and ask my audience to consider that perhaps, just perhaps, there was something useful there all along. Full Article

On 6 August at 07:51hrs the SMM heard an explosion approximately 3.9km east of its location in Luhansk city. The SMM went to the site from where it had heard the explosion located at the intersection of Karpynsky and Vatutyn Street in Luhansk city, 500m north-east of SMM’s accommodation. The site was cordoned off, by so-called “LPR” “police” and the SMM could assess from a distance of approximately 15-30 meters, that an explosion had likely been caused by an improvised explosive device (assessed as approximately 1kg of high explosives) placed next to or in, a lamp post about two meters away from the vehicle, which was damaged and downed, at the side of the road. The SMM saw a black sport utility vehicle “Toyota Landcruiser Prado” severely damaged with windows shattered and front and side airbags deployed. “LPR” “police” members at the site told the SMM that there were two casualties, without giving further details. Mr Vladislav Deynego, “LPR” member, told the SMM that Mr Plotnitsky was “in a bad condition and not able to receive visitors.” At the time of writing, the SMM could not reach personnel at either of the two hospitals in Luhansk city for confirmation. The SMM will continue following up to confirm the information, and observe further developments.Related StoriesSpot Report by OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine: SMM threatened at gunpoint near Lobacheve in Luhansk regionLatest from OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) to Ukraine, based on information received as of 19:30, 4 August 2016Latest from OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) to Ukraine, based on information received as of 19:30, 3 August 2016 Full Article OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine Conflict prevention and resolution Eastern Europe Spot report

osi Explosions outside Brazil's Supreme Court leave 1 dead, force justices to evacuate By www.voanews.com Published On :: Wed, 13 Nov 2024 21:41:44 -0500 SAO PAULO — Two explosions outside Brazil's Supreme Court on Wednesday killed a man and forced the justices and staff to evacuate the building in the capital of Brasilia. The court said in a statement that two very strong blasts were heard at about 7:30 p.m. local time, shortly after Wednesday's session had finished. It added that all the justices and staff left the building safely after the incident. A police statement had said earlier that an artifact exploded outside the court. Local firefighters confirmed that one man died at the scene but did not identify him. Local media reported that the second explosion occurred about 20 seconds after the first. The incident took place in Brasilia's Three Powers Plaza, where Brazil's main government buildings, including the Supreme Court, Congress and presidential palace, are located. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was not in the neighboring presidential palace at the time of the blasts, spokesperson José Chrispiniano said. Police blocked all access to the area, and the presidential security bureau was conducting a sweep of the grounds around the presidential palace. Brazil's federal police force said it was investigating and did not provide a motive. The Supreme Court in recent years has become a target for threats by far-right groups and supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro due to its crackdown on the spread of false information. Justice Alexandre de Moraes in particular has been a focus for their ire. Earlier, another explosion was heard outside Brazil's Congress, but it apparently did not cause damages.
