आतल्या तापाचं काय करायचं कळत नाही. रात्री झोप येत नाही. तळमळायचाही कंटाळा येतो. डास येऊ नयेत म्हणून दार-खिडक्या लावल्यामुळे व अंगभर पांघरुण घेतल्यामुळे गुदमरल्यासारखं होतं. श्वासोच्छ्वासासाठी पांघरुण दूर सारावं तर डास दिसतो. खरं नाही, भास नाही, स्वप्नही नाही, असले चमत्कारिक खेळ सुरू होतात. फार मागे विसरून गेलेलं काय, काय पुन्हा आठवायला लागतं. कोण कुठली माणसं आपल्या झोपेत घुसतात.

ओळख नसणे हे सर्व मानवी दु:खांचं मूळ आहे हे माझ्या लक्षात आलेलं आहे. ओळख हवीच. ओळख नसलेला माणूस ताशी शंभर मैल वेगाने धावला तरी इंचभरही पुढे सरकत नाही. ओळख असलेला झोपून राहिला तरी तो उठायच्या आत शंभर मैल पुढे गेलेला असतो. आता मी ठरवून टाकलं आहे- मागे राहायचं नाही. ओळखी वाढवायच्या.

गेल्या काही दिवसांत केवढं काय काय झालं! कुणी कोणाला भोसकला. कुणी मुलाबाळांसकट आत्महत्या केली. कुणी भल्या वाटणाऱ्या माणसाने खूपच पैसे खाल्ले. मी हे सटर फटर का सांगत बसलोय. हे एवढं लिहून, जोक मारूनही माझी अस्वस्थता का जात नाही? मी काय लिहायला हवं? कळत नाही..

अलीकडे स्वत:चाच संशय यायला लागला आहे. आपणही डुप्लिकेटच आहोत की काय, असले विचार डोक्यात येऊन झोप उडते. टीव्हीमुळे माणसं आपल्यासारखं न जगता टीव्हीतल्या माणसांसारखं जगू लागली आहेत. काही स्त्रिया टीव्ही सीरिअलमधल्या ग्लिसरीन लावून, मेकअप हलू न देता ढसाढसा रडणाऱ्या बायांची स्पॉन्सर्ड दु:खं जगू पाहतात.

अलीकडेच हिंदी सिनेमाचे एक निर्माते भेटले. निराश वाटले. म्हणाले, आता पडद्यावर दारू चालत नाही, सिगरेट चालत नाही, बलात्कार नाही, सेक्स नाही. हे सगळं नसेल तर वाईट माणूस दाखवायचा तरी कसा, असा प्रश्न त्यांना पडला होता. मी त्यांना धीर देण्यासाठी ‘वाईट माणूस हवाच कशाला?,’ असं काहीतरी म्हणालो.

मागील काही लेखांमधून आपण आजच्या युगात चराचर सृष्टीला व्यापून पुन्हा दशांगुळे उरलेल्या ‘स्पर्धा’ या संकल्पनेचे विविध पैलू समजावून घेत आहोत. स्पर्धेचा अतिरेक व त्यातून निर्माण होणाऱ्या गुंतागुंतीचाही आपण मागोवा घेत आहोत.

मागील लेखात आपण ‘कायझेन’ या संकल्पनेची तोंडओळख करून घेतली. ही संकल्पना समजावून घेणे, आत्मसात करणे जपानी समाजमानसाला काहीसे सोपे गेले. कारण मुळात ही संकल्पना आणि त्यामागचे तत्त्वज्ञान हे जपानच्या राष्ट्रीय धर्माशी व संस्कृतीशी अतिशय सुसंगत होते.

टोयोटा ही आज मोटारनिर्मितीच्या क्षेत्रातील जगातील अग्रगण्य कंपनी आहे. तिच्या बाबतीत अगदी अलीकडे घडलेली ही घटना.. आपल्या मोटारीच्या दर्जाविषयी शंका वाटली म्हणून टोयोटाने ग्राहकांना विकलेल्या मोटारी परत मागवल्या. किती मोटारी? तब्बल दीड कोटी मोटारी!

१९८५ साली डॉ. डेमिंगने जपानला भेट दिली होती. पाश्चात्त्यांच्या प्रभावाचा संसर्ग जपानला ग्रासणार आहे याची कल्पना त्याला आली होती. आपल्या एका भाषणात डॉ. डेमिंगने जपानी उद्योजकांना याची स्पष्ट कल्पनाही दिली होती. ‘पाश्चात्त्यांना ज्या अर्थाने स्पर्धेवर अधिष्ठित जग अपेक्षित आहे, त्या जगाची जीवनशैली फारशी सुखावह नाही.

आजही डॉ. डेमिंग यांची शिकवण तितकीच शिरोधार्य आहे. अनुकरणीय आहे. भारतात अनेक ठिकाणी डॉ. डेमिंग यांच्या विचारसरणीवर आधारित अभ्यासक्रम, प्रशिक्षण वर्ग चालवले जात आहेत. लखनौमध्ये तर एक शाळा डेमिंगच्या तत्त्वप्रणालीवरच चालवली जाते.

जगातील बहुतेक सर्व महत्त्वाच्या विद्यापीठांनी, व्यवस्थापन शास्त्रवेत्त्यांनी डॉ. डेमिंगच्या शिकवणुकीला फारसे महत्त्व दिलेले नाही. हार्वर्ड- स्टॅनफोर्डसारख्या जगातील सर्वात मान्यताप्राप्त विद्यापीठांनी तर त्याच्या विचारसरणीचा तीव्र धिक्कार केलेला आहे. कदाचित डॉ. डेमिंगच्या विचारसरणीचे महत्त्व जाणवण्याकरता आणखी काही काळ वाट पाहावी लागणार आहे.
