Satisfaction with psychology training in the Veterans Healthcare Administration.

[Correction Notice: An Erratum for this article was reported in Vol 49(4) of Professional Psychology: Research and Practice (see record 2018-44921-005). In the article “Satisfaction With Psychology Training in the Veterans Healthcare Administration,” by Heather G. Belanger, Glenn Curtiss, Jennifer J. Duchnick, Jeffrey Bates, Stacy Pommer, Stacey Pollack, T. Michael Kashner, and Kenneth R. Jones (Professional Psychology: Research and Practice, Advance online publication, May 7, 2018, http://dx.doi.org/10.1037/pro0000187), the copyright attribution was incorrectly listed. The correct copyright is “In the public domain.” In addition, Heather G. Belanger no longer works at the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital in Tampa, Florida. She is currently a research scientist at the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center (DVBIC) at the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). Her correspondence address has been updated in the article. All versions of this article have been corrected.] Given that VA is the largest trainer of psychologists in the United States, this study sought to understand satisfaction with VA psychology training and which elements of training best predict trainees’ positive perceptions of training (e.g., willingness to choose training experience again, stated intentions to work in VA). Psychology trainees completed the Learners’ Perceptions Survey (LPS) from 2005 to 2017 (N = 5,342). Satisfaction was uniformly high. Trainee satisfaction was significantly associated with level of training, facility complexity, and some patient-mix factors. Learning environment (autonomy, time with patients, etc.), clinical faculty/preceptors (teaching ability, accessibility, etc.), and personal experiences (work/life balance, personal responsibility for patient care, etc.) were the biggest drivers of stated willingness to repeat training experiences in VA and seek employment there. Results have implications for psychologists involved in the provision of a training experience valued by trainees. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)

Preparing women in academic psychology for their first compensation negotiation: A panel perspective of challenges and recommendations.

Successfully landing and then negotiating for your first position is an exciting and challenging task. In this article, we use a narrative review to present the literature on gender and negotiation with a focus on academic psychology work contexts. We highlight important differences between factors that are within the individual’s control versus factors at the institutional or societal level. Drawing directly from the research literature, we make several recommendations for women trying to manage negotiation in contexts that are likely biased against them at the institutional and cultural level. For example, we recommend that women take steps to reduce situational ambiguity, use niceness and assertion strategically, and cognitive reframing to improve performance. We also make parallel recommendations for institutions, to create a more equal playing field in employment negotiations in academia. We conclude with expert advice on how to manage the important task of negotiation throughout the career from successful psychologists to contextualize the research findings at the personal level. Parental validation and invalidation predict adolescent self-harm.

This study was designed to evaluate family processes theoretically implicated in the onset and maintenance of adolescent self-harm. We focused on understanding parental validation and invalidation in response to their adolescent children to estimate the association between parental responses and self-harm in a high-risk group of adolescents. We also sought to determine the influence of psychotherapy on parental validation and invalidation over time during participation in a randomized clinical trial of psychotherapy designed to reduce self-harm. Teens (N = 38, Mage = 14.85, 94.1% female, 55.3% Caucasian, and 17.5% Latino) and their parents participated in three assessments over a 6-month period corresponding to pretreatment, midtreatment, and end of treatment in the trial. Results indicate a robust association between parental validation, invalidation, and adolescent self-harm. There were no significant associations observed between parental validation, invalidation, and adolescent suicidal ideation. Observed levels of parental validation and invalidation were not changed during the 6-month course of psychotherapy. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)

Biofeedback: Using the power of the mind–body connection, technology, and business in psychotherapies of the future.

This article examines biofeedback within the context of American health care, mind–body practice, clinical psychology, technology, and business. American medicine is shifting its emphasis from disease management to health promotion, prevention, and integrative symptom management. This biopsychosocial approach requires the use of clinically and cost-effective behavioral health interventions. Biofeedback is an ideal tool because it harnesses the mind–body connection to help patients improve disease conditions and even achieve optimal health. With its capability to teach self-regulation, to treat a variety of chronic disease conditions, to blend the technical and the humanistic, coupled with its budding research profile, biofeedback can offer clinically and cost-effective, interventions that fit nicely into the primary care delivery system. The push of the American Psychological Association for psychologists to practice in primary care settings along with the extensive training in lifestyle interventions that clinical health psychologists undergo makes them uniquely qualified to integrate biofeedback into clinical health practice. If psychologists routinely included biofeedback in their psychotherapy practices and honed their entrepreneurial skills to market it, they could create a mind–body intervention that increases the demand for behavioral care. Thus, biofeedback offers an opportunity to invigorate American psychotherapy, as the American health care system will benefit from effective holistic mind–body practices. LGB Q&A: An investigation of the influence of sexual orientation on professional practice among LGBQ-affiliated forensic mental health professionals.

Recent decades have seen an increase in research examining the experiences of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Queer, and other-identifying (LGBQ) individuals in the workplace, including surveys and empirical studies exploring how an individual’s sexual orientation influences their work, instances of workplace discrimination due to sexual orientation, and the impact of antidiscrimination legislation in changing workplace culture. However, research has yet to examine the experience of LGBQ-identifying forensic mental health professionals. A survey of 37 forensic psychologists and psychiatrists who self-identified with the LGBQ community found half of all participants viewed their sexual orientation as impacting their professional identity in some way. Qualitative analyses suggest this may include an interest in research about or a desire to work with LGBQ-identifying individuals. Although one third of the participants in this study reported they did not believe there was LGBQ related prejudice or discrimination in the field of forensic mental health, 81% of participants reported experiencing some form of prejudice/discrimination. Further, over half of all participants reported changing their professional practice, physical appearance, and/or behaviors to influence others’ perceptions of their sexual orientation. In total, these data suggest LGBQ-identifying forensic mental health professionals may simultaneously feel as though the field is particularly accepting of nonheterosexuality while also identifying ways in which their sexual orientation impacts their workplace behaviors and environment. The ethical implications and utility of routine outcome monitoring in determining boundaries of competence in practice.

Routine outcome monitoring (ROM) involves the implementation of standardized measures, usually on a session-to-session basis to monitor treatment progress and alert clinicians when clients are not responding as expected. A growing body of research suggests that ROM is an effective method for enhancing the effectiveness of treatment (Lambert et al., 2003; Miller, Hubble, Chow, & Seidel, 2015); however, the utility of ROM data as an additional source of information in determining issues of competence have not been fully addressed. Commonly, boundaries of competence are determined based on previous education, training, and supervised experience, however these methods may be limited as experience may not equate to clinical effectiveness and therapists’ self-appraisal of their competence is often biased. In this paper, we provide a brief overview of ROM, and argue for the utility of ROM as an additional method for determining boundaries of competence and enhancing ethical decision-making. We provide a clinical example to illustrate the utility of ROM in ethical decision-making. Limitations and future recommendations for the utility of ROM in ethical decision-making are addressed.
