Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words, An Intergenerational Dialogue (November 13, 2024 11:00am)

Event Begins: Wednesday, November 13, 2024 11:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Exhibition Dates: September 13 – December 7, 2024Opening Reception: September 19, 2024

Kelly Church & Cherish Parrish: In Our Words, An Intergenerational Dialogue is a major exhibition that centers the subjectivities of two contemporary Indigenous artists whose practices have sustained and bolstered the relevance of the age-old Anishinaabe practice of black ash basket-making in the 21st century. The exhibition highlights the significance of community-based conversations between mother and daughter, and their ongoing conversations with elders (ancestors), young folx, and future generations as vital aspects of their methodology. These conversations often take place during basket gatherings - where community members come together and share stories and teachings that can encompass Anishinaabe creation stories, as well as those of survivance and resilience, to inform the materiality and liveness of their work. The curatorial and interpretive framework of this exhibition contends that the deeply situated and temporal works by Church (Stamps, BFA 1998) and Parrish (LSA, BA 2020) are repositories for Anishinaabe ways of knowing, thinking, and making that contribute to the complexity of American art and its histories. The expansive and bold practices of Church and Parrish affirm the sovereignty of Anishinaabe lifeways and the importance of including Indigenous narratives that have systematically been left out. Thus, the thematic survey of their work will explore the under-examined themes that inform their work such as Native women’s labor as carriers of culture and knowledge-keepers, the legacy of boarding schools and ancestors who walked on, the treaties in Michigan and the long-overlooked legacy of Anishinaabe intellectual life and their relevance today. Just like the practice of weaving and interlacing distinct strips of black ash to create one whole, Church and Parrish will address the diverse and interconnected themes with approximately 30-35 works, including 15-17 new works. Together, the exhibition offers an incisive critique of the colonial, racist paradigm of systemic erasure and assimilation that continues to this day, with the ongoing crises of missing and murdered Indigenous women, culture wars, and climate change that threaten Indigenous ways of living, sustenance, and making.
Curated by Srimoyee Mitra with Curatorial Assistant Zoi Crampton.
Stamps Gallery is grateful to Michigan Humanities and U-M Arts Initiative for generously supporting the exhibition and programs.

WordPress Uses RSS as Blog Export Format

If you export your WordPress blog, it is delivered to you as an RSS feed that holds all of the blog's entries, pages and comments. WordPress makes use of five namespaces and calls the format WordPress eXtended RSS (WXR). I'm working on a Java application that converts a WXR file into a set of static HTML pages.

RSS Enclosure Support in WordPress

One of the biggest challenges for a software developer implementing the RSS 2.0 specification is the issue of enclosures in a feed item. The specification is infamously unclear on whether an item allows one enclosure or multiple enclosures.

The RSS Advisory Board worked on the RSS Best Practices Profile for nearly two years, investigating a lot of RSS readers and feed producers to see how they handled issues like this. We ultimately made the following recommendation for enclosure:

Support for the enclosure element in RSS software varies significantly because of disagreement over whether the specification permits more than one enclosure per item. Although the author intended to permit no more than one enclosure in each item, this limit is not explicit in the specification.

Blogware, Movable Type and WordPress enable publishers to include multiple enclosures in each item of their RSS documents. This works successfully in some aggregators, including BottomFeeder, FeederReader, NewsGator and Safari.

Other software does not support multiple enclosures, including Bloglines, FeedDemon, Google Reader and Microsoft Internet Explorer 7. The first enclosure is downloaded automatically, an aspect of enclosure support relied on in podcasting, and the additional enclosures are either ignored or must be requested manually.

For best support in the widest number of aggregators, an item SHOULD NOT contain more than one enclosure.

Because the profile was completed in 2007, it would be useful to see how current software handles RSS enclosures to evaluate whether any recommendations should be reconsidered. To start this effort the current WordPress was tested, since that massively successful platform publishes 60 million RSS feeds. WordPress enables audio files to be added to a blog post using the Audio icon in the block editor:

When three audio files were added to a blog post in WordPress, the item in the RSS feed contained three enclosure elements:

<enclosure url="http://example.com/Fanfare60.wav" length="2646044" type="audio/wav" />
<enclosure url="http://example.com/CantinaBand60.wav" length="2646044" type="audio/wav" />
<enclosure url="http://example.com/ImperialMarch60.wav" length="2646044" type="audio/wav" />

Follow this blog for more updates on enclosure usage in feeds and feed readers.

As you probably guessed, we have an RSS feed.

Forum- Passwords & Personal Data

After we changed everyone's passwords a couple of weeks ago, people were asking some questions about passwords and personal data.  Firstly, we don't hold much personal data- as people have usernames, we don't know real names. We do ask for the year and date of birth to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). We ask for an active email account and send a link that has to be clicked on to complete the registration. This is to make it harder for automated registration by advertisers and spammers. We also ask where you're from, where you are based now and what your first language is. There are also optional fields where people can add biographical information and interests if they wish. Unless you use your real name as a username or connect via Facebook, the data is anonymous. If an acount is deleted, this information is deleted from our records.

The Result

I like this because it is a fun way for me to look at some of the things we need to work on as a whole. Also, I plan on showing this to my class and asking them what they notice from it.

Apple Intelligence will help AI become as commonplace as word processing

When Apple’s version of AI, branded as Apple Intelligence, rolls out in October to folks with the company’s latest hardware, the response is likely to be a mix of delight and disappointment. The AI capabilities on their way to Apple’s walled-garden will bring helpful new features, such as textual summaries in email, Messages and Safari; image creation; and a more context-aware version of Siri. But as Apple Intelligence’s beta testing has already made clear, the power of these features falls well below what is on offer from major players like OpenAI, Google, and Meta. Apple AI won’t come close to…
