RSS Newsletter from FeedForAll

October is the month of beta testing. Beta testers help provide feedback and shape the direction of the application by providing suggestions for enhancements and usability. Beta testers also let us know if they encounter any errors in normal program use. A beta version means that the product is stable, but does not yet contain all the features planned for the final release, nor does it contain all the documentation. The purpose of the beta version is to get feedback from users about the way the product works (general look and feel), and to get feedback concerning the features that are included (or should be included) in a final release.

FeedForAll Beta Release!
The first beta release for FeedForAll version 2.0, is now available. This beta release consists of some major work behind the scenes, making FeedForAll Unicode, UTF-8, and RSS Namespace compatible. What this means in non-geek speak, is that FeedForAll 2.0 can be used to maintain RSS feeds in any language. It also now supports all RSS 2.0 namesspace extensions, like iTunes.
http://www.feedforall.com/beta.htm

FeedForAll Mac Beta Release!
We are pleased to announce the second beta release of FeedForAll Mac. The following new features in the FeedForAll Mac beta release:
* Extensions (XML Namespaces) have been completely redone and iTunes® is now fully supported;
* Capabilities to allow browsing directories and files on the remote FTP server in FTP upload;
* The WYSIWYG window has been slightly modified, as well as adding format alignment features

FeedForDev Beta Release
We are pleased to announce the FeedForDev Beta. FeedForDev VCL Control and ActiveX components are for developers and make it easy for software developers to communicate with users from within their software application.

RSS2html.php
A new version of the free rss2html.php script has been made available. The new script that displays RSS feeds as html, can optionally use curl instead of fopen. The new version's scripting change addresses security concerns that some web hosting providers had expressed. Details on rss2html.php v2.7 can be found at: http://www.feedforall.com/free-php-script.htm

New Article(s)
Ego Searches & RSS
Ego searches are free and simple searches designed to monitor blogs and news portals for mentions of your company, product, competitors or other specific keywords. Conducting ego searches not only allows you to stay informed, but also allows you to maintain a strategic advantage over competing companies.
http://www.feedforall.com/ego-searches.htm

The Copyright Debate & RSS
RSS is commonly defined as really simple syndication. So, this means that any material contained in a feed is available for syndication, right? Well no, not exactly. It means that the content contained in an RSS feed is in a format that is syndication friendly, if the copyright holder allows for syndication.
http://www.feedforall.com/rss-copyright-debate.htm

RSS Security
As RSS gains momentum, security fears loom large. As publishers are quickly finding innovative uses for RSS feeds, hackers are taking notice. The power and extendibility of RSS in its simplest form is also its achilles heel. The expansion capabilities of the RSS specification, specifically the "enclosure" field which has launched the podcasting phenomenon, is where the vulnerabilities lie. The enclosure field in itself is not the problem, in fact the majority of RSS feeds do not even use the enclosure tag. The enclosure tag is essentially used to link to file types, things like images, word documents, mp3 files, power point presentations, executables and can be thought of in similar terms to email attachments.
http://www.feedforall.com/rss-security.htm

We'd like to thank you for your continued support. It is through customer support and your suggestions that we've been able to continually improve the NotePage product line.

Reminder FeedForAll Beta

http://www.feedforall.com/beta.htm

FutureRSS
FutureRSS is a PHP script converts an RSS feed to HTML and displays only the current RSS feed's items. The new functionality allows webmasters to pre-plan an RSS feed's items and prepare them in advance.

The FutureRSS script only displays items thats dates have passed. Allowing web publishers to prepublish content weeks or even month's in advance, knowing that the content will automatically be displayed at the appropriate time. Publishers can control the publication date, syndicating contents well in advance. The new FutureRSS script will be made available free of charge to all registered users of FeedForAll and FeedForAll Mac.
http://www.feedforall.com/future-rss.htm

Namespace Directory
We have created a directory of RSS 2.0 namespace extensions. This will help users looking to expand their RSS functionality.
http://www.feedforall.com/directory-namespace.htm

New Article(s)
Text to Podcast
We are taught to recycle paper, cans, bottles and plastic but marketers rarely discuss the value of repackaging and repurposing content. Publishers and marketers alike have embraced content syndication and RSS but few have considered the value beyond the actual syndication. Consider an alternative communication channel that reaches a new or different audience.
http://www.feedforall.com/text-to-podcast.htm

Advertising in RSS Feeds
As publishers have moved towards monetizing RSS feeds, their have been vibrant discussions as to whether advertisements in feeds are viable, or whether they will drive subscribers away. At the end of the day, while it appears that many are discussing the philosophical approaches to ads in RSS feeds, few are taking the time to examine the options available for inserting advertisements in feeds.
http://www.feedforall.com/advertising-in-rss.htm

Develop Quality Content to Rule the Web
What many webmasters fail to realize is that there is an endless supply of content on the web that is freely available to webmasters. Not only can public domain material be freely used and syndicated on websites, but a number of content publishers provide content in exchange for a link back to their websites. A variety of contents related to the website theme that is integrated into the website will attract the interest of both search engines and web surfers. The key to taking advantage of free content is integrating or including content that is directly related to the theme of the website.
http://www.small-business-software.net/content-is-king.htm

Monitoring and Tracking RSS Feeds
Measuring and tracking RSS while a fairly simple concept, is really anything but. Unlike websites, RSS have the added caveat of potential syndication, making accurate tracking a challenge to anyone but the extremely tech savvy. It is not unrealistic for marketers to want to know how many subscribers they have, which items in their feeds attract the most interest, or how many click-throughs are generated as a result of an RSS feed.
http://www.feedforall.com/measuring-rss.htm

Develop Quality Content to Rule the Web
2005 literally took the world by storm. The tragedies of the Asian Tsunami, the Hurricanes that blew through the US Gulf Coast and the earthquakes that swallowed parts of Pakistan have left an indelible mark on 2005. While mother nature cast a shadow on 2005, it was technology that delivered the impact that resulted in a huge outpouring of donations. The world was touched by the human element seen real-time in pictures and videos. Today's technology was able to deliver the graphical grittiness that portrayed the nightmares occurring half a world away.

RSS Scripts Directory
We have recieved access requests from customers interested the various scripts we have compiled. Registered users of FeedForAll and FeedForAll Mac have free access to the scripts directory. We've added an additional access options for users who do not use FeedForAll. Access to the RSS Scripts Directory is available for a flat fee of $ 29.95. The scripts directory currently contains RSS Cache, FutureRSS, RSSmesh, and of course rss2html.php
http://www.feedforall.com/scripts-directory.htm

The RSS Scripts Directory Contains:
rss2html Cache
RSS Cache is now included in the scripts directory. FeedForAll is pleased to announce the release of rss2html Cache. This new module allows users of the rss2html.php script the ability to have their source RSS feeds cached, significantly speeding up the web page display time. The new rss2html Cache module will expedite the retrieval and conversion of RSS feeds into html web pages. Once the feed is cached it will be read from the local hard drive for a specified amount of time. After the specified time has lapsed, the RSS feed will be fetched again. The script is available free of charge to all registered users of FeedForAll and FeedForAll Mac.
http://www.feedforall.com/rss-cache.htm

New RSSmesh
RSSmesh is a script that enables webmasters to merge the contents of multiple RSS feeds into a single feed.
http://www.feedforall.com/rssmesh.htm

New FutureRSS
FutureRSS is a PHP script that enables webmasters to prepare content for their RSS feeds in advance, and have it automatically appear at the desired date and time. The FutureRSS script can be used with any RSS 2.0 feed, and allows content to be 'scheduled' to appear in the feed weeks, or even months later. Webmasters have found, to their dismay, that most RSS feed reader applications, and feed aggregator applications do not honor Publish Dates (PubDate) that are set into the future, making it impossible to prepare content in their RSS feeds ahead of time.

The FutureRSS script solves this problem, by not making any of the RSS feed's Items available until their PubDate becomes current. The new FutureRSS script will be made available free of charge to all registered users of FeedForAll and FeedForAll Mac. Additional details are available at:
http://www.feedforall.com/future-rss.htm

Namespace Directory
Namespace allow publishers to expand upon the fields defined by the RSS specfication. We have created a directory of RSS 2.0 namespace extensions. This will help users looking to expand their RSS functionality.
http://www.feedforall.com/directory-namespace.htm

New Article(s)
Realtors and RSS
Daily more and more realtors are turning to RSS as a tool to market homes for sale. The growing RSS phenomenon in the realty market makes perfect sense. Unlike email RSS feeds have a 100% delivery rate. In addition the costs involved in creating and managing an RSS feed are insignificant when compared to the print advertising Realtors spend on each week. Imagine the amount spent each week to promote various properties in circulars and weekly newspapers, compared to the costs associated with updating and managing an RSS feed.
http://www.feedforall.com/realtors-use-rss.htm

Monetizing RSS Feeds
Publishers are evaluating options and determining how they can profit from RSS feeds. The two obvious contenders that publishers are considering to profit from their RSS feeds are: subscription RSS feeds and RSS feed advertisements.
http://www.feedforall.com/monetizing-rss-feeds.htm

Organic Search Engine Optimization
The fabled tales of successfully tricking search engines into high rankings have given way to a new truth: to achieve decent consistent ranking, you cannot engage in tricks but on focused optimization done in a professional ethical manner. According to search sources, with the latest Google update, there is no longer an even playing field when it comes to search placement. The new Google ranking system gives an advantage to large, established businesses that have achieved brand recognition. Does this mean small businesses should give up on the Web as a marketing model? No, of course not, they simply must develop quality content.
http://www.small-business-software.net/organic-seo.htm

Delicious RSS
Delicious is a social bookmarking system, that is notable, not only for its unusual web address http://del.icio.us, but for its unusual approach to content building that is becoming increasingly popular. In order to ease the burden of producing consistent stream of fresh content, publishers are turning to users to build, categorize and qualify content. While this is said to be part of the web 2.0 phenomenon, publishers realize the value of collaboration.

RSS More Than Just News Headlines
The core use for RSS is generally considered news headlines and blog syndication, but innovative businesses are learning to use RSS in different ways. Consider RSS as a communication channel that can provide current, targeted information as it appears within a very targeted audience.

Promoting Podcasts
Podcasting is a great new medium, but creating a podcast is only half of the work. Promoting a podcast is equally critical to it's success.
http://www.feedforall.com/tips-promoting-podcasts.htm

What is Fair Use
As the Internet matures, users and governments are struggling to manage controversial issues. Lets face it, the Internet did not exist when the US copyright laws were written;let us not forget, while many countries respect copyright laws, the Internet is global without a governing body. There are not only different laws, rules and regulations, but also jurisdiction issues. RSS didn't exist when copyright laws were written either. While ardent supporters feel any content in a feed can be syndicated, other equally fervent publishers contend that original works are just that--original works, and in many countries protected by copyright laws.

The Influence of Technology on Politics
Americans have always had a say in their government, at least in theory. Since the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783, the United States of America has been the “land of opportunity,” where even a lowly log-splitter, exercising sufficient brains and dedication, can raise himself to the highest executive office.
The U.S. Constitution safeguards the right to vote for every citizen over eighteen years of age, with few exceptions, ensuring a government of the people, by the people and for the people. Nevertheless, only about half of eligible voters historically vote for their president. Those who do make it to the polls are more educated than unschooled, more white than black, more men than women, more wealthy than poor, and more old than young.

Create Voice-enabled RSS News Feeds

With the proliferation of RSS feeds in state and local governments, a unique opportunity is developing to expand the delivery of the critical information contained in these feeds by leveraging the most ubiquitous personal communications device in the world -– the telephone. Governments that use RSS to deliver information to citizens using RSS feeds can also leverage VoiceXML, an open standard for developing telephony applications, to expose RSS content via cellular and traditional telephones.

VoiceXML is a web technology that can turn any telephone, even a rotary phone, into an Internet device. VoiceXML is a non-proprietary, web-based markup language for creating vocal dialogues between humans and computers. VoiceXML is similar to another common markup language -- HTML, the basic language of visual web pages. Just as a web browser renders HTML documents visually, a VoiceXML interpreter renders VoiceXML documents audibly. In this respect, one can think of the VoiceXML interpreter as a telephone-based, voice browser. As with HTML documents, VoiceXML documents have web URIs and can be located on any web server. However, instead of pointing a client-side web browser at a specific URI, citizens can access a VoiceXML application by calling a toll free telephone number from any ordinary telephone - cellular or traditional, touch-tone or rotary.

It’s not hard to think of a scenario where a local government or a university could publish an RSS feed with topical news, and have a phone number for students or citizens to call for more information. Depending on how the VoiceXML is structured, the caller could have the option of being transferred directly to the number associated with the information.

The trick would be, in my opinion, finding the right place within the RSS feed to put the phone number (if the publisher wanted to provide the option of an automatic transfer). Ideally, the phone number would be contained within its own RSS element. Glancing quickly at the RSS 2.0 spec, this could be something like the guid element. So, if a publisher was using a software package to author and publish RSS feeds, they would probably need to do a little experimenting to find the right place to place the phone number.

Because RSS and VoiceXML are both XML vocabularies, there are a number of standards-based methods for converting RSS to VoiceXML and using RSS feeds from within VoiceXML applications. The first method involves the use of eXstensible Style Sheet Language Transformations (XSLT). I have created a tutorial covering this technique and some of the issues relating to it. This technique is generally agnostic to the underlying technology used; XSLT transformations are supported in technologies like JSP, PHP, Perl, .NET and others.

To see it in action there is a demo application available at (800) 289-5570. Enter the following PIN when prompted: 9991422919. This example uses the latest headlines news feed from CNET News.com (news.com.com) and the XSLT file covered in my tutorial. This is only running on a demo platform, so I can’t guarantee anything on performance. Still, it gives you a sense of how an RSS feed sounds. This technology could allow travelers only equipped with cell phones to get the latest NOAA RSS weather reports, lobbyists to dial-in for legislative floor calendars, and rescue teams to phone for the latest operational instructions.

The other method for using RSS from within VoiceXML applications is to leverage the new data tag, an addition to the VoiceXML specification that is part of the developing VoiceXML 2.1 standard. Some excellent examples of this technique can be found on the VoiceXML Forum website at http://www.voicexmlreview.org/apr2004/columns/apr2004_speak_listen.html.

VoiceXML also allows for the playback of recorded audio. If one had an audio file that they want to include in a feed, a VoiceXML application could actually invoke the audio file and play it to the caller. There is a VoiceXML service at (800) 555-TELL that plays audio files. Give it a call and try listening to the “News Center” option.

One caveat -- most VoiceXML platforms only support certain audio formats, but the more common ones (WAV, MP3) are usually supported. VoiceXML also supports recording the audio of a call, so if one wanted to let callers post comments the application could record their audio and save it for later playback. There is actually a project called “Phone Blogger” that takes this approach (see www.wombatnation.com/phoneblogger).

By using these techniques, governments that make information available to citizens through RSS feeds can dramatically expand the accessibility of these feeds by making them available to anyone with a telephone.

Tips to Selecting an RSS News Aggregator

When determining what RSS feed reader to download, thought should be given to security. More an more publishers are using RSS feeds as a way to deliver podcasts or media rich-content. Users of desktop software will want to find an RSS reader that allows for rich media to be delivered safely and securely.

Web surfers might want to give thought to another consideration of cross compatibility and synchronization. With the advances in RSS readers, many subscribers use multiple platforms to read their feeds. While this is convenient, if the the web surfer is not using a synchronized solution, they find themselves marking the same feed items read multiple times.

These days, aggregators are available in all shapes and sizes. Determine what type of RSS reader you would like to use to aggregate and manage your RSS feeds.

Parsing an RSS News Feed with a Bash Script

I am involved in several free software projects, including one or two where I maintain the website. For one of those projects, we currently are updating the website. Ours is probably similar to other free software projects. We use a hosting service for several key services, including news, but we run our website on a web server that we own. In our case, we run most of our project on SourceForge and run the website on a third-party service, so the news and website are on different systems.

Not surprisingly, our project uses an RSS feed to pull news items from SourceForge to display on the project website.
