On the one hand, trade flows, rules and policies can exacerbate environmental challenges as consumers regularly purchase goods produced or disposed of in unsustainable ways in other countries therefore 'exporting' environmental costs. On the other hand, trade rules and flows can be harnessed to support environmental agendas and impact commercial and trade prospects positively. The speakers will discuss the urgent need for greater political leadership and inclusive policy dialogue on environment and trade to address its development and competitiveness. Which priorities should form the heart of a forward-looking environment and trade 2.0 agenda in the context of the UN’s SDGs? What role can international trade play in helping deliver sustainable food and land use systems? And how can stakeholders promote the scaling-up of the many initiatives underway and serve as a vehicle for transformative change toward a more sustainable economy at the national and international level? This event is only open to Major Corporate Member and Partner organizations of Chatham House. If you'd like to attend, please RSVP to Linda Bedford. To enable as open a debate as possible, this event will be held under the Chatham House Rule. Members Events Team Email Full Article

sustainability Is Sustainability Talk a Distraction from What Really Matters? By feedproxy.google.com Published On :: 2014-03-19T13:56:00Z Most talk of "energy efficiency" and “sustainability” is insidious or naïve, or even misdirected. We all should switch off the lights when we leave a room, use efficient, gas-fired tankless water heaters (even when they are uneconomical), and work in LEED certified buildings. Intelligent thermostats — Nest, for instance — may regulate our air-conditioning to assure comfort while generating savings, and shaving “peak” load on the electricity grid. Using LED lamps and star rated appliances is admirable too. These solutions and behaviors, while praiseworthy, are beside the point; we should rather favor “supply action” before demand response.
