dd One-dimensional ladder gallium coordination polymer By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2019-10-03 A one-dimensional ladder-type coordination polymer, poly[[(μ2-hydroxido)(μ2-1H-pyrazole-3,5-dicarboxylato)gallium(III)] monohydrate], [Ga(C5H2N2O4)(OH)(H2O)]n or [Ga(HPDC)(OH)(H2O)]n, I, isotypic with a V3+ coordination polymer previously reported by Chen et al. [J. Coord. Chem. (2008). 61, 3556–3567] was prepared from Ga3+ and pyrazole-3,5-dicarboxylic acid monohydrate (H3PDC·H2O). Compound I was isolated using three distinct experimental methods: hydrothermal (HT), microwave-assisted (MWAS) and one-pot (OP) and the crystallite size should be fine-tuned according to the method employed. The coordination polymeric structure is based on a dimeric Ga3+ moiety comprising two μ2-bridging hydroxide groups, which are interconnected by HPDC2− anionic organic linkers. The close packing of individual polymers is strongly directed by the supramolecular interactions, namely several O—H⋯O and N—H⋯O hydrogen-bonding interactions. Full Article text
dd The first coordination compound of deprotonated 2-bromonicotinic acid: crystal structure of a dinuclear paddle-wheel copper(II) complex By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2020-01-17 A copper(II) dimer with the deprotonated anion of 2-bromonicotinic acid (2-BrnicH), namely, tetrakis(μ-2-bromonicotinato-κ2O:O')bis[aquacopper(II)](Cu—Cu), [Cu2(H2O)2(C6H3BrNO2)4] or [Cu2(H2O)2(2-Brnic)4], (1), was prepared by the reaction of copper(II) chloride dihydrate and 2-bromonicotinic acid in water. The copper(II) ion in 1 has a distorted square-pyramidal coordination environment, achieved by four carboxylate O atoms in the basal plane and the water molecule in the apical position. The pair of symmetry-related copper(II) ions are connected into a centrosymmetric paddle-wheel dinuclear cluster [Cu⋯Cu = 2.6470 (11) Å] via four O,O'-bridging 2-bromonicotinate ligands in the syn-syn coordination mode. In the extended structure of 1, the cluster molecules are assembled into an infinite two-dimensional hydrogen-bonded network lying parallel to the (001) plane via strong O—H⋯O and O—H⋯N hydrogen bonds, leading to the formation of various hydrogen-bond ring motifs: dimeric R22(8) and R22(16) loops and a tetrameric R44(16) loop. The Hirshfeld surface analysis was also performed in order to better illustrate the nature and abundance of the intermolecular contacts in the structure of 1. Full Article text
dd A single-crystal diamond X-ray pixel detector with embedded graphitic electrodes By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2020-03-31 The first experimental results from a new transmissive diagnostic instrument for synchrotron X-ray beamlines are presented. The instrument utilizes a single-crystal chemical-vapour-deposition diamond plate as the detector material, with graphitic wires embedded within the bulk diamond acting as electrodes. The resulting instrument is an all-carbon transmissive X-ray imaging detector. Within the instrument's transmissive aperture there is no surface metallization that could absorb X-rays, and no surface structures that could be damaged by exposure to synchrotron X-ray beams. The graphitic electrodes are fabricated in situ within the bulk diamond using a laser-writing technique. Two separate arrays of parallel graphitic wires are fabricated, running parallel to the diamond surface and perpendicular to each other, at two different depths within the diamond. One array of wires has a modulated bias voltage applied; the perpendicular array is a series of readout electrodes. X-rays passing through the detector generate charge carriers within the bulk diamond through photoionization, and these charge carriers travel to the nearest readout electrode under the influence of the modulated electrical bias. Each of the crossing points between perpendicular wires acts as an individual pixel. The simultaneous read-out of all pixels is achieved using a lock-in technique. The parallel wires within each array are separated by 50 µm, determining the pixel pitch. Readout is obtained at 100 Hz, and the resolution of the X-ray beam position measurement is 600 nm for a 180 µm size beam. Full Article text

dd Isotopy classes for 3-periodic net embeddings By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2020-03-05 Entangled embedded periodic nets and crystal frameworks are defined, along with their dimension type, homogeneity type, adjacency depth and periodic isotopy type. Periodic isotopy classifications are obtained for various families of embedded nets with small quotient graphs. The 25 periodic isotopy classes of depth-1 embedded nets with a single-vertex quotient graph are enumerated. Additionally, a classification is given of embeddings of n-fold copies of pcu with all connected components in a parallel orientation and n vertices in a repeat unit, as well as demonstrations of their maximal symmetry periodic isotopes. The methodology of linear graph knots on the flat 3-torus [0,1)3 is introduced. These graph knots, with linear edges, are spatial embeddings of the labelled quotient graphs of an embedded net which are associated with its periodicity bases. Full Article text

dd Maroon 5 called out for faking 'Sugar' wedding crashing By feeds.scpr.org Published On :: Sat, 17 Jan 2015 17:05:26 -0800 A screenshot from Maroon 5's "Sugar" music video.; Credit: Maroon 5 Mike RoeMaroon 5 has a new music video built around a simple, viral-bait premise: Adam Levine and the rest of the band trying to crash as many weddings around Los Angeles as they can in one day (Dec. 6 of last year). It's a lot of fun, directed by "Wedding Crashers" movie director David Dobkin, but it appears that some of those "crashed weddings" may have been staged. Watch the video (warning: contains adult language): Maroon 5: Sugar Fans have noticed that several of the couples seen in the video appear to be actors. Actors Stephen and Barbara Woo posted on Facebook that they played the parents of one of the brides in the video and said that not only were the weddings staged, they didn't even take place on one day, claiming that all the weddings were shot in the same location over the course of three days. Facebook post by actors The groom from the wedding featured the most in the video has been named by observers as Nico Evers-Swindell, according to Cosmopolitan. Evers-Swindell was already married to actress Megan Ferguson since 2011 — and she's not the "bride" in the video. Fans have fingered one of the models as "America's Next Top Model" runner-up Raina Hein, according to Cosmopolitan. Also, the man believed to be her long-term boyfriend isn't the groom in the Maroon 5 weddings. Don't lose heart, though — at least one of the weddings in the video appears to be real, with wedding photographer Duke Khodaverdian telling E! that yes, it was the real deal. "It was an incredible surprise and everyone at the wedding is going to cherish those memories," Khodaverdian told E! in December. Instagram 1 Instagram 2 A representative for the band told "Entertainment Tonight" that only the grooms knew about the band in each case — but it looks like that means in the case of the real crashed weddings. The representative did concede that some shots "had to be shot separately from the real weddings due to time and space constraints that were given," and the article does note that the video was shot over three days. Levine expressed his excitement about crashing the weddings in an interview with People magazine. "I had no idea I would be affected by the overwhelming reactions we received from the couples and guests," Levine said. He told "Entertainment Tonight" that it was stressful to arrange, but that the surprise felt good. "[We were] happy that they liked our band, too – [that] would have been a total disaster." They also solicited Twitter to find people lip-syncing "Sugar" to possibly put in their music video, but it doesn't look like those submissions got used. Maroon 5 Sugar tweet If you want to see Levine involved in a different dubious outfit, you can see him back hosting "The Voice" on Feb. 23. Open call auditions for the show begin Jan. 24 in New York, with Los Angeles auditions on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. Did you spot any more actors you recognize in this video? Do you have any more evidence of any of these weddings being either real or faked? Let me know on Twitter at @MikeRoe. This content is from Southern California Public Radio.
