Internet - Fireball Sightings

Every year in late October and early November, he explains, Earth passes through a river of space dust associated with Comet Encke. Tiny grains hit our atmosphere at 65,000 mph. At that speed, even a tiny smidgen of dust makes a vivid streak of light--a meteor--when it disintegrates. Because these meteors shoot out of the constellation Taurus, they're called Taurids.

Sarah Palin Resignation News Conference

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Honorable Sarah Palin will address us in her capacity as Governor of the Great State of Alaska for the last time. She has seen her last Russian plane; the last view of Russia from her kitchen; and still has the Bridge to Nowhere. The Governor now speaketh:

Palin: Hi, everyone, I love you and know you love me even though my popularity ratings have nose dived into the Bering Sea. Sad, and just when I needed more per diem, Arctic Cat jackets, PACs and legal defense funds.

Okie, dokey, the problem here is not me; never me, but the media. Our brave soldiers are fighting in Kuwait just so the media can talk about my family. Its an outrage and I am personally mind sick over it!

I know there are 15 months left in my administration since I counted them last night while reading my seven figure book contract. Wow, a hockey mom writing a book and so far I have 252 blank pages. It's a start! Just so much to say about what is needed in this country to make me richer, hire enough attorneys to stay out of jail and maintain some kind of presence.

The Media is bad. Katie Couric, Charles Gibson and the rest asked me questions I wasn't prepared for and probably never will be. It was disgusting to sit there and have to think about what publications I read or my qualifications for vice-president. I read a lot, sometimes even more and really enjoy book pictures. Told them what a VP does, but too illiterate to understand. They should be ashamed as I am.

I will continue to further my agenda which is ever changing and promote good Americanism when it happens. Good Americanism is defined as whatever gives me more power, more account money and the ability to say things that don't make sense to dumb Americans. Its that simple and now I can do it with a seven figure book deal. $150,000 in two months for clothes was a spit in the old bucket!!

The silly ethics charges still plague me and recently I failed to respond to one about my legal defense fund. You know, there are some great sales out there and THEY claim I used the money wrongfully. Now, by law, I have to appear to defend myself. Don't they know I am the Governor Emeritus and don't have to do diddly. The Great Dick Cheney is in the same boat, but he sent his daughter out to defend his lawlessness. I can't do that since mine don't know what to defend and frankly, neither do I. Its a tough world for a hockey mom out of work and no pension.

It was all these cowpie bloggers that made me decide to resign, but a new saying went in the book: pulling a Palin. I really haven't quit that much, but perhaps a lot, but in a minor sense. Frankly, I resent calls to see my notarized high school diploma. Just another media trick to humiliate my Family, but it is difficult to recall which high school I quit. I went to four colleges and must have graduated from one. As of this moment, this hockey mom is a private citizen and will campaign for just about anyone if the price is right.

I am for good old American capitalism! Capitalism and not this silly socialism Obama stands for. Socialism is defined as anything that resembles My Space, FaceBook or Twitter without a profit. Twitter carries my message, but not far enough. People, I need a platform, preferably with a seven figure salary, to convey the message of the Republican party, the Alaska Independence Movement, oops, never mind, and other options which grant me stipends, contractual endoments, et. al.

Finally, being Governor of this Great State has been a blast. Doing absolutely nothing for months while lining up deals is one of the greatest enjoyments of life. Working at home, collecting the big per diem bucks, flying the kids on the state dole, spending more time out of state promoting myself rather than assisting with Alaskans home fuel crisis and finally, convincing the Republican big wigs I am a viable candidate for higher office is stressful. Hockey moms know how to handle this and I will always keep an eye on Putin over there who poses a threat to our way of life.

Nuff said....I am out of here, got to see my lawyers, bitch about Tina Fey though she provided good publicity (SNL paid good bucks), handle some ethics problems and make sure my ex-brother-in-law has some more issues. No questions since my hair can't take it. My kids will be along soon and you can ask them. This is Sarah Palin saying you won't have me to kick around any more and neither will I.

The Media sucks...now I have said it. Folks, don't believe anything they say about me, Todd, my Family or money I allegedly took under the table. or contractors who built our house for free. I have mouths to feed, wolves to shoot from helicopters and sponsors willing to pay for my mind...not much, but enough. Remember, American Capitalism is the best in the world and I, Sarah Palin, believe in attaining as much capital as possible. I'm gone, but have to remember what high school I attended....hmmmmmmm.

Wait, one more thing!! There is a rumor out there about Todd and I divorcing. Not true since he owes me too much and my religion forbids it, I think...will have to check with witch doctor. The despicable, uncouth National Enquirer is quoting 4 people as saying I had an affair with my husband's former business partner, Brad Hanson whom Todd divorced shortly thereafter for some reason. They even claim possession of a notarized statement, but whoopy do! I don't even know what an affair is much less engage in one. Would I dare do this after my daughter had a child out of wedlock and then after that scoundrel father of her baby, Levi, went about the country saying we knew he was doing the horizontal tango with her in our own house. Nein, nadda, nix, not so.! We don't even know what goes on in our own house much less someone having sex with our daughter...geeeeesssssshhhh. Okay, no affair, honest, no affair, I was Wasilla Mayor and much too busy building the Bridge to Nowhere, our free, oops, our house, making deals and driving the city into $23 million debt. Out of here again....Bye Alaska...why no response back? Why no cheers? Damn liberals!!!

new design in the works

I have started work on version 7 of the SproutWorks layout. I have decided to incorporate a scrolling tile engine I made. It uses scrolling tiles in a similar way that Google maps does, only it's not for displaying maps. I intend to use it for games and animations. When the new layout is completed, it should look far more interesting than the current one. It will probably have some interactive elements in place of where the logo is now. Last night I wrote a PHP program that draws a spinning gear. It can draw the gear in any given size, color, and with different numbers of teeth. I will make some sort of interesting animation with the gears.

Weighing up the Designs

My wife and I sat down and did a decision matrix on the three designs we're considering. It became pretty clear that the Heathcote (AV Jennings) and the Portland Mk2 (Fairmont) were the two we would be choosing from. The other design just feels too small, and the bedrooms coming off the main hallway is a real negative to us. The outcome of the session was that price would likely be the final deciding factor. I should say that the price is not just the building price, but also the likely time to build and the associated interest costs. My wife will call both builders during the week and get some ball park prices on the upgrades we will need.

Spec Home Design - First Looks

Much walking around of display homes today. Before I get into the houses we've looked at I'll just quickly discuss the market that we see our home targetting and the requirements we believe these segments have.

1. Two mid level income couples with no children or 1-2 very young children.
2. Couples looking to downsize with no children at home

With these two segments in mind we see the primary requirements of the house as being:

1. High street appeal, a front elevation that is fashionable and attractive. But nothing too 'leading edge' that may look dated too quickly.
2. Internal fixtures that give an impression of quality without going too over the top. The suburb where we are building will not support a house that is fitted out with the best of everything, but certainly some improvements will be looked for by younger couples looking for some 'wow' factor. These improvments will largely be confined to the kitchen and bathrooms, as these allow for the greatest amount of individualization.
3. An internal layout supporting either a young family, or a couple with diverse interests. To us this translates to a 3 bedroom or 2 bedroom + study configuration. It also means that a separate master bedroom bathroom (en-suite) and living area are vital.
4. 2700mm (9ft) ceilings for a feeling of extra space.
5. Covered outdoor entertaining area.
6. Low maintenance modern garden.

Based on these requirements, and the size of the land we found ourselves looking at the villa homes (suitable for a 8.5-10m (28' to 33') frontage) and courtyard (suitable for 38' to 43'frontages) homes. The width of our land (11m, 33') means we are restricted to single garage versions of the courtyard homes which are almost universally double garage designs. We are happy to settle on an existing design of a contract builder as we believe this will lead to the house being completed faster and will lower the overall cost of building.

The two designs we saw today were the:

Heathcote 180 - AV Jennings

This is a nice design, a courtyard home and with a single garage pretty well suited to the size of the block. I particularly like the way the bedrooms/bathroom are separated from the living area. The only real downside to design of the house is the width, the courtyard down the side of the house would be quite small. The other major downside is the price, the base price is $105,000, which is a lot more than what we wanted to spend. It does, however, include a lot of things as standard that other builders charge extra for.

Hamilton - Fairmont

This design is the real minimum of what we wanted to build. It meets all of our requirements but the front lounge feels small and we did not like the bedroom doors coming off the main hallway. However, the price is right, just $89,000 for the base price.

No need to make a decision yet. We're still waiting for a lot of design brochures to arrive from different builders, I'm sure we'l find what we want.

Building Contract Signed

Went and saw the salesman in his office today to sign the building contract. First piece of good news was that the house plan was given the preliminary go ahead from the local council despite the problems I discussed yesterday. Of course there is a chance that they may change their mind and we may end up having to alter the plan to comply with some bureaucratic requirement. This could potentially mean more costs.

The building contract we signed was the standard contract offered by the Housing Industry Association here in Australia. Using the standard contract, written in plain English makes the whole process a lot easier to understand. The salesman was great and took us through every section of the contract and explained its purpose and potential effects on us. Key things that came out of it are:

  • The contract includes a 48 hour cooling off period.

  • The payment schedule was laid out. It's in 5 equal installments with the first payment due after the concrete foundations are paid. Interestingly the contract includes a provision to allow the last payment to be held over until the client is happy with the home. 'Happy' (according to the contract) means that the standard of the new home is at least that of the display homes presented by the builder.

  • Fairmont Homes seems to offer a fixed price contract, and discards the section of the contract that allows for changes in contract price and the builders costs change. The allowable change was something like 2% per month of the contract.

  • The Housing Industry Association outlines the mediation process between the builder and client clearly in the contract. The HIA actually mediates this process themselves and provides both parties with advice if a fee is paid (presumably to stop trivial complaints).

  • The contract does include some time lines but there doesn't appear to be any way of enforcing them and no mention is made of time taken to get the concrete foundations down, just time to build after this happens. 130 working days after foundations going down is the expected time period.

  • The builder warrants the home for a period of six months. The salesman tried to tell us this was not transferrable to a new owner but this sounds like it would contravene Australian consumer laws so I'll need to look into this.
  • The whole process took a bit over an hour and included some preliminary selections for the house such as the shape of internal archways. It would have taken longer but the salesman's printer ran out of ink and some of the paperwork was not signed. This will be mailed to us in the next week.

In spite of not signing some paperwork with the main contract signed and the deposit paid the actual process of building can start. This will include drawing up a site plan, conducting soil tests and writing engineering reports, and submitting the plans to council for development and building approval. We've been told 3-4 months from today we can expect the foundations to go down. Here's hoping it's only that long!

6 Tips for Designing Effective M-Learning Apps for Your Corporate Training

Mobile learning makes everything a little easier. Schedules are more navigable, and you don’t have to plan for an instructor to deliver real-life training. This new standard changes the playing field. With the advent of mobile training, employees are able to learn from anywhere, and have easy access to information if they need to look something up. As long as the app is designed properly, you’ll get more from mobile learning than you ever could from traditional training.

    1. Know what you want to cover
It’s useless to have a corporate training app just for the sake of having one. If the information is too general, no one is gaining anything. If it’s too specific, employees may lose sight of the big picture. Break down the elements of your training into blocks. Each block should have a main point that shows its relationship with smaller points. Breaking things into thorough but bite sized pieces is the best way to go.

    2. Figure out how you’re making it available
What platforms do you need to reach with your app? If everyone has a company phone, you’ll want to design your training app specifically for that platform. If your employees use their personal phones, you’ll have to adapt your app for a variety of platforms. The content should read the same on every app. While there may be some aesthetic differences, the key is to make everything cohesive across the board. Everyone should have access to the same info.

    3. Add some social elements
The only downside to m-learning is that users typically work within the apps independently. You’re losing the element of discussion you could get at a face-to-face training table. Discussions promote knowledge and are necessary for exchanging ideas. People may have questions and no one to answer them. Work social elements into your app to build a sense of community among employees and instructors.

    4. Create video content
There’s more to mobile learning apps than fun graphics and comical sound effects. Working video content into your training app can help people understand complex processes, such as how to work certain pieces of equipment or software that may be pertinent to their jobs. Whether you want to utilize videos of real people or cartoon animation, having a moving representation of what you’re trying to explain will help visual learners perfect their knowledge.

    5. Let the learner become the instructor
Role playing exercises are common in corporate training, especially when it comes to customer service situations. We use these techniques because they work by giving everyone a chance to showcase and strengthen what they’re best at. Utilizing features such as user submitted quizzes and polls in your app is great for engagement, and it allows everyone to showcase just how much they know.

    6. Encourage feedback
If your app isn’t working for someone, they may not speak up – and that’s especially true if they believe everyone else understands it just fine. Always seek feedback from your employees about how your mobile learning programs are working for them. If you find people are having difficulty, it may be time to redesign the interface or simplify the information. People are willing to tell you how they want to learn, as long as you’re willing to listen.

It can seem overwhelming and confusing at first to throw away a traditional method in favor of an innovation, but the results are worth it. Once you implement mobile learning in your workplace, you’ll never want to go back to training the old way.
