Japanese wholesale prices, the PPI or CGPI:

+0.2% m/m

  • expected 0.0%, prior 0.0%

+3.4% y/y

  • expected +3.0%, prior +2.8%

The higher results will be a bit of a tailwind for the yen, at the margin. Not too much though, there is the huge monetary policy divergence that is weighing on the hapless yen to contend with.

Of note is that renewed yen falls pushed up import costs for some goods

The Bank of Japan is wary of yen weakness pushing up prices, the Bank wants inflation but not like that. The Bank wants inflation coming from wage growth pushing up demand. The Bank has said it'll consider raising rates to help slow or stop the yen decline. But political pressure is on the Bank not to hike until wages are seen rising at the next round of wage negotiations in (Japan's) spring.

The Producer Price Index (PPI) in Japan is also known as the Corporate Goods Price Index (CGPI)

  • its a measure of the average change over time in the selling prices received by domestic producers for their output
  • is calculated by the Bank of Japan

Unlike the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures the price change that consumers see for a basket of goods and services, the CGPI focuses on the change in the prices of goods sold by companies.

The PPI reflects some of cost pressures faced by producers

  • its based on a basket of goods that represents the range of products produced within the Japanese economy, including items such as:
    • raw materials like metals and chemicals
    • semi-finished goods
    • and finished products
    • different weights are assigned to each category within the index based on its contribution to the overall economy.
  • it does not account for the quality improvements in goods and services over time, which might lead to overestimation of inflation
    • additionally, it reflects only the prices of domestically produced goods, leaving out the impact of imported goods

The PPI can be used as a guide to inflationary pressures in the economy:

  • If producers are facing higher costs, they may pass these on to consumers, leading to higher consumer prices.

Lets hope the new Trump Administration follows through with it's proposed 60% tax on Chinese goods to the USA because it will heavily press China to slash the costs of products headed to Aus- such as what's happened in the recent Chinese EV market.
Realistically I think these units would be fairly priced at around $1450 since that's a fair conversion for what the Yanks are paying in equivalent USD on their recent sales.

Ridiculous value for a monitor with these specs, even with no stand and shipping costs - paid $38 for StarTrack to Brisbane area, so $237 total, ordered Sunday arrived today.

Should go without saying it's not an ideal monitor for gaming, but honestly it would be plenty enjoyable for many titles imo (just not competitive shooters etc).

The screen was well packed and works perfectly, has a great picture and there were no scratches or dead pixels on my unit.

Crisis calls to a suicide prevention group for LGBTQ+ youth jumped 700% after Trump’s victory

Donald Trump has yet to take office as president for a second time, but vulnerable groups of Americans are already responding to his election victory.

As mental health appointments have surged in the wake of the 2024 presidential election, so have cries for help from LGBTQ+ youth. The day after the election, the Trevor Project, a nonprofit suicide prevention program for LGBTQ+ youth, saw a 700% increase in requests for its crisis services, according to data shared with Fast Company. (The Trevor Project also created a guide for LGBTQ+ youth to find and build community after the election.)

“The increases in volume that we have experienced across our lines indicate that this election is taking a toll on the mental health of LGBTQ+ young people in a major way,” said Becca Nordeen, the group’s SVP of crisis intervention. “It’s clear that this is a challenging moment for many LGBTQ+ young people. But, we want to remind everyone that no matter what they are feeling right now, we can – and we will – get through this together.”

As Fast Company reported last week, the election also sparked a surge in appointments for mental healthcare services, according to data from Zocdoc.

모니터가 800만원? 애플 프로 디스플레이 XDR + 프로 스탠드 개봉기

지난 WWDC에서 출시된 프로 디스플레이 XDR이 12월 11일 오전 2시부터 판매되기 시작했습니다. 지난 글(링크)에서 언급했던 것처럼 이 디스플레이에 대한 기대가 컸기 때문에, 판매 링크가 열리자마자 스탠다드 글래스 모델과 나노 텍스쳐 글래스 모델, 프로 스탠드 두 개와 베사 어댑터 킷 하나를 각각 주문했습니다. 그리고 지난 주 목요일 스탠다드 글래스 모델과 프로 스탠드가 도착했습니다. 프로 디스플레이 XDR 개봉기와 첫 인상 간단하게 살펴보시죠.

박스 디자인은 상당히 간소합니다. 흰 박스에 제품명이 쓰여있고, 제품의 실물 사진이 아닌 단순화된 그래픽이 작게 인쇄되어 있습니다. 실물 크기에 가깝게 제품의 실제 사진을 인쇄해놓는 애플의 컨슈머용 제품 박스랑은 확실히 다른 느낌입니다. 하지만 그 와중에도 고급스러움을 잃지는 않았습니다. 박스 손잡이의 재질이라던가 이런 소소한 부분에서 고급스러움이 물씬 풍깁니다.

 

프로 스탠드: 이게 무슨 125만원… 어?

프로 스탠드는 생각보다 컸습니다. 적어도 모니터를 충분히 지지할 정도의 하판 면적을 확보하고 있습니다. 또 하판, 지지 기둥이 하나의 통 알루미늄을 깎아내어 만들어졌기 때문에 그 자체로 무게중심을 잡을 만큼 묵직하고 튼튼합니다. 이 스탠드 부분은 독특한 브릿지와 연결부로 모니터와 연결되는데 이 부분이 이 스탠드의 핵심입니다.

이 스탠드가 다른 스탠드 혹은 모니터 암과 가장 크게 차별화되는 부분은 모니터와 스탠드를 연결하는 메커니즘입니다. 기본적인 연결은 자석과 걸쇠를 통해 이뤄집니다. 모니터를 연결부분 근처에 알맞게 가져다대면 자석이 모니터를 끌어당겨 올바른 위치에 놓이게 합니다. 모니터와 스탠드의 자석이 붙는 순간 내부의 걸쇠가 모니터의 해당 부분에 맞물리고 걸쇠가 잠기면서 모니터가 완전히 고정됩니다. 모니터를 스탠드에서 분리하는 과정 역시 매우 쉽습니다. 스탠드와 모니터가 연결되는 부분의 잠금 슬라이더를 밀면 걸쇠의 잠금이 풀리고 그 상태에서 모니터를 떼면 모니터 연결부가 위쪽으로 들리고 이후에 모니터가 떨어져 나옵니다. 아마 시장에서 구할 수 있는 스탠드 혹은 모니터 암 중에서는 가장 쉬운 탈착 방식을 가진 제품이 아닐까 합니다(탈착 장면 영상).

프로 스탠드는 높이 조절, 각도 조절, 피벗을 지원합니다. 스탠드와 모니터 사이의 브릿지가 통째로 움직이며 높이가 조절되고 브릿지와 모니터 연결부가 움직이며 각도 조절이 이뤄집니다. 애플이 말한 것처럼 움직임은 굉장히 부드럽습니다. 다만 어느 정도 이상 가격대 모니터의 스탠드나 모니터암에서 못 보던 수준의 부드러움이라고 말할 순 없을 것 같습니다(높이, 각도 조절 영상). 

다만 구매전에는 알 수 없는 몇 가지 디테일이 있습니다. 모니터가 연결되지 않았을 때에는 브릿지와 모니터 연결부 모두 움직이지 않게 잠겨 있습니다. 이는 모니터를 붙일 때 브릿지가 가장 위쪽으로, 그리고 연결부가 위를 바라보게 기울어져 있어야 가장 편하기 때문으로 보입니다. 모니터가 붙으면 이 잠금들이 모두 풀립니다. 브릿지를 통한 높이 조절, 연결부를 통한 각도 조절이 다 되는거죠. 그리고 모니터를 피벗하기 위해서는 모니터를 분리할 때와 마찬가지로 잠금 슬라이더를 밀어야 하는데요, 이 잠금 슬라이더는 브릿지가 가장 높은 위치로 올라가 있을 때만 밀리게 되어 있습니다. 이 잠금 슬라이더를 밀고 모니터를 회전시키면 모니터가 스탠드나 책상에 부딪히지 않고 부드럽게 돌아갑니다. 모니터가 완전히 회전되면 그 위치에서 자동으로 잠기고, 운영체제는 모니터가 회전된 것을 인지하고 UI의 방향을 바꿔주게 됩니다. 그리고 이렇게 피벗이 된 상태에서는 연결부를 통한 각도 조절은 가능하지만 높이 조절은 불가능합니다. 피벗이 된 상태에서 브릿지를 통한 높이 조절이 가능하다면 모니터가 책상에 부딪힐 염려가 있으니 이렇게 설계한 것 같습니다(피벗 영상). 

프로 스탠드에는 구매하기 전에는 알 수 없었던 여러 디테일들이 숨어 있었습니다. 프로 스탠드를 만져본 뒤, 프로 스탠드는 따로 리뷰할 만한 가치가 있다고 생각했습니다. 프로 스탠드가 125만원의 가치를 하느냐라는 질문에 대한 대답은 그 때 확실히 하도록 하겠습니다.

 

디자인: 심플, 독특

앞면에서 바라본 프로 디스플레이 XDR의 디자인은 단순함 그 자체입니다. 32인치의 화면과 화면을 둘러싸고 있는 얇은 배젤 외에는 어떤 디자인 요소도 없습니다. 이는 단순한 디자인을 완성하려는 목적도 있겠지만 콘텐츠 외에 방해가 되는 요소를 제거하려는 기능적인 목적도 역시 겸하고 있을 것으로 보입니다.

단순한 앞면 디자인과는 달리 뒷면은 날 좀 바라보라고 외치는 듯한 느낌입니다. 뒷면의 독특한 격자 패턴은 신형 맥 프로의 앞, 뒷면을 채우고 있는 패턴과 동일한 모양입니다. 두꺼운 알루미늄 판을 구형으로 깎아내되, 판을 뚫어낼 만큼 깊게까지 들어가지는 않습니다. 이런 작업을 양 쪽에서 엇갈리게 하면 이런 독특한 격자 패턴이 만들어집니다. 사진으로 보기에는 굉장히 흉해 보일 수 있는데, 저는 실제로 제품을 봤을 때 그런 느낌은 받지 못했습니다. 아름다운 디자인이라는 생각은 들지 않지만, 애플다운 디자인이라는 것은 확실합니다(뒷면 디자인 영상).

모니터를 받아보기 전에는 이 격자 패턴 전체가 공기 흡입구로 기능한다고 생각했습니다. 하지만 실제로 팬이 만들어내는 공기 흐름은 후면의 가운데 블록에만 발생합니다. 즉, 가운데 블록에 인접한 격자 패턴 외의 나머지 대부분의 격자 패턴은 공기 흐름을 원활히 하기 위해 있는 것이 아닙니다. 애플은 이 구조물이 히트싱크로 기능한다고 주장합니다. 이런 독특한 격자무늬가 단순히 알루미늄 판 하나가 있는 것보다 더 넓은 표면적을 가지는 것은 당연하지만 얇은 핀들을 촘촘히 세우는 것보다는 표면적이 좁기 때문에 뒷면의 구조물은 맥 프로와의 패밀리룩을 맞추려는 목적과 함께 지금껏 보지 못했던 디자인을 선보이려는 목적이 더 커 보입니다.

프로 디스플레이 XDR은 요즘 기준에서 절대 얇다고 말하기는 어려운 모니터입니다. 많은 로컬 디밍 존과 6K 해상도의 픽셀을 통제하기 위한 회로 부분과 직하형 로컬 디밍, 독특한 디자인 패턴 등이 결합된 결과입니다. 하지만 애플은 프로 디스플레이 XDR의 깔끔한 디자인으로 두꺼움이 주는 부정적인 느낌을 지우는 데 성공했습니다.

 

맺으며…

지금까지 프로 디스플레이 XDR의 디자인과 프로 스탠드에 대한 첫인상을 정리해 봤습니다. 사실 이 제품의 진짜 가치는 외장 디자인이 아니라 화질에 있겠죠. 하지만 화질에 대한 종합적인 평가를 위해서는 시간이 필요합니다. 특히 이런 전문가용 디스플레이의 화질을 어설프게 평가하는 것은 안 하니만 못할 것입니다. 그래서 오늘은 이 디스플레이의 화질에 대해서는 따로 언급하지 않으려 합니다. 이 제품의 화질에 대한 사전 정보가 궁금하신 분들은 지난 글(링크) 혹은 영상(링크)을 확인해 보시기를 부탁드립니다.

프로 디스플레이 XDR로 재미있는 시도를 많이 해 볼 수 있을 것 같습니다. 나노 텍스쳐 글래스 모델과 스탠다드 글래스 모델을 비교하면서 논 글래어 처리가 저반사 처리와 어떻게 다른지에 대해서 설명해 드릴 수 있을 것 같구요, HDR 콘텐츠가 도대체 무엇인지, 왜 좋은지에 대해서도 교보재가 있으니 시각적인 예시를 들면서 깊게 다뤄볼 수 있을 것 같습니다. 개인적으로는 프로 디스플레이 XDR을 리뷰하면서 전문가용 모니터 리뷰의 포맷을 만드는 일도 병행해야 할 것 같구요.
