Cloud Covered: What was new with Google Cloud in April

April brought many adaptations to the new reality of working from home and socially distancing. At Google Cloud, we kept our focus on helping our customers navigate the many impacts of COVID-19 by meeting and connecting securely and virtually.

Try Google Meet and its new features, now free.
Last month, we announced that Google Meet, our premium video conferencing product, is now free for everyone. Meet’s availability will be gradually expanding over the next few weeks, and can be used by anyone with an email address. Plus, Meet has some new features like an expanded tiled layout, background noise cancellation, and options to present with higher audio quality. G Suite customers can use Meet’s advanced features, like meetings of up to 250 participants, until Sept. 30.

Even better, Meet has a secure foundation.
In an almost-entirely-virtual world, it’s important to make sure that online meetings and other interactions are secure. Our approach to security is simple: make products safe by default. We designed Meet to operate on a secure foundation, providing the protections needed to keep our users safe, their data secure, and their information private. Meet video meetings are encrypted in transit and our array of safety measures are continuously updated to prevent abuse. Learn more.

Working securely includes meetings, devices, emails, and more.
To help enterprises adjust to new numbers of remote workers securely, businesses can now use BeyondCorp Remote Access. This is something that’s been used within Google for almost ten years, and enterprises can now address the issue of remote access to internal web apps. It’s based in the cloud, so it’s easy to get started, and lets a company’s employees and contractors use the company’s web applications on their devices, without needing to set up a virtual private network (VPN). In addition, you can take a look here at how our machine learning models used by Gmail to detect threats continue to evolve to keep up with new COVID-19-related threats.

The new Las Vegas region helps power the cloud.
Google Cloud’s newest region in Las Vegas opened up last month, providing cloud computing capacity so that companies can better serve users in the Las Vegas region. Companies located near Las Vegas can get faster access to their data than if data was stored farther away. Other cloud regions in western U.S. include Los Angeles, Salt Lake City and Oregon.

Learn new things without leaving the house.
All this month, you can explore free cloud learning resources from Qwiklabs and Pluralsight. You’ll find cloud basics and courses in on-demand skill areas, like data analytics, machine learning, and Kubernetes. The Google Cloud Essentials lab offers an introductory tour of Google Cloud and explanations of basic cloud concepts.

That’s a wrap for April. Stay well and keep up to date on the Cloud Blog.

From stage star to Vogue cover: Why age cannot wither Judi Dench

She is the oldest person to grace the fashion bible’s cover – and she’s a hit on social media. Who says that getting older signals an end to vitality?

You can’t call Judi Dench lazy when it comes to contributing to society, but she’s been particularly dedicated to boosting morale of late. Who knows, perhaps she felt pressured to make up for her turn in the unhinged Cats film, where her feline character horrified viewers by appearing to wear a coat made of its own fur. Dench has provided vital comic relief during this time of crisis, predominantly with silly social media clips – a Twitter video of her wearing a novelty dog hat with pop-up ears in which she instructs us to “keep laughing” racked up 5.4 million views. Now she has supplied a far meatier pick-me-up by becoming, at 85, British Vogue’s oldest cover star.

‘Every stone will be uncovered’: how Georgia officials failed the Ahmaud Arbery case

Systemic flaws within Glynn county’s district attorney offices led to a lack of action against the men involved in this ‘modern lynching’

In the days and weeks after Ahmaud Arbery was shot and killed, multiple Glynn county law enforcement officials failed to thoroughly investigate his death and, in one case, refused to allow police officers to make arrests, the Guardian has learned.

Vidya Balan is making new discoveries while on lockdown

The unstoppable Vidya Balan who always has surprised her audience is making new discovery during this lockdown. We have earlier seen Vidya making some interesting revelations of how she has been spending her quarantine cleaning her house and other household chores. She made a surprising revelation that she is not fond of cooking and hence doesn't know how to cook well but since the past few days, she has been trying to cook and discovered that it is quite fun.

We recently saw Vidya Balan making Modak which is also her favourite dish, and we can say that she is undoubtedly enjoying the cooking process in her home during this lockdown. Cooking is a hectic job and Vidya many times candidly told that she doesn't know how to cook and cooking never interested her, but during this lockdown, we have seen many celebrities cooking and posting pictures on Instagram and other social media platforms. We have seen quite a few numbers of actors who have been posting their cooking videos and pictures on social media for some time now and now we have our diva Vidya Balan who is a very fun way shows us how she is loving the concept of cooking and went on making modaks.

Vidya gleefully said in an interview with Bombay Times, "I always saw cooking as a symbol of domestication, but in the lockdown it was a new discovery." Vidya who has always been known for playing a women-centric role and being headstrong was of the opinion that cooking is a very domesticated role and she would never fit perfectly in it but this lockdown enabled her to find out a new trait in her and is she is enjoying it with her whole heart.

We hope to see Vidya posting more of cooking videos now and like each role we hope she will ace in cooking too. Vidya is going to rock her audience with her much-awaited Shakuntala Devi that is expected to hit screens post the lockdown and also will be seen in much-celebrated film Sherni where for the first time she will be seen playing the role of a forest officer.

Health Minister Rajesh Tope: All Maharashtra citizens will get free health cover

Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope announced that all citizens will be covered under the state government's health scheme, and Maharashtra will be the first state to provide free and cashless insurance protection to its people. Speaking to reporters after a Maharashtra Day event in Jalna on Friday, Tope said 85 per cent of the state's population was covered under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY) at present and the cover will be extended to the remining 15 per cent.

A memorandum was signed to include government, semi- government employees and white ration card holders in the scheme in a bid to prevent private hospitals from overcharging patients, he said. "The government has signed a MoU with the General Insurance Public Sector Association (GIPSA) for treatment of COVID-19 patients at private hospitals in Pune and Mumbai," he said.

Similarly, different packages will be designed for all diseases, to standardise treatment fees at all hospitals, the minister said. Earlier, 496 hospitals were covered in the scheme, but now over 1,000 hospitals will come under it, he said. As per the Disaster Management Act and Epidemic Act, the state government has capped the fees of COVID-19 treatment at private hospitals, the minister said.

Hospitals that don't have tie-ups with the GIPSA will also have to standardise their treatment fees, he added.
