Opinion: Endangered Bird Couple Returns To Chicago's Shore

Monty and Rose met last year on a beach on the north side of Chicago. Their attraction was intense, immediate, and you might say, fruitful. Somewhere between the roll of lake waves and the shimmer of skyscrapers overlooking the beach, Monty and Rose fledged two chicks. They protected their offspring through formative times. But then, in fulfillment of nature's plan, they parted ways, and left the chicks to make their own ways in the world. Monty and Rose are piping plovers, an endangered species of bird of which there may only be 6,000 or 7,000 in the world, including Monty, Rose and their chicks. They were the first piping plovers to nest in Chicago in more than 60 years. After their chicks fledged, they drifted apart. Rose went off to Florida for the winter, and Monty made his way to the Texas coast. They'd always have the North Side, but were each on their own in a huge, fraught world. And then, just a few days ago, Monty and Rose were sighted again, on the same patch of sand on

News Brief: Unemployment Data, Michael Flynn Case, Georgia Shooting

Copyright 2020 NPR. To see more, visit DAVID GREENE, HOST: Often, a new monthly jobs report is of interest, you know, mostly to economists and policymakers. The one coming out today could be much more significant. NOEL KING, HOST: Right. Because of COVID-19, we could see the highest unemployment rate in this country since the Great Depression. GREENE: And let's talk about this moment with NPR's Scott Horsley. Hi, Scott. SCOTT HORSLEY, BYLINE: Good morning, David. GREENE: So how ugly do we think these numbers are going to be? HORSLEY: Very ugly. To put this in some perspective, David, the worst monthly job loss we saw during the Great Recession, the financial crisis, was 800,000. This morning's report is going to show job losses in the millions, maybe as many as 20 million. And as painful as that is, it's still not going to tell the full story of the economic wreckage that the coronavirus pandemic has been causing. GREENE: Why not? HORSLEY: Well, a couple of reasons. Shanghai Disneyland Sells Out Of Tickets For Post-Shutdown Reopening

It took only minutes for Shanghai Disneyland to run out of tickets to Monday's reopening as people jumped at a chance to visit the amusement park for the first time since the COVID-19 outbreak forced it to close in late January. Visitors to the theme park will be required to wear face masks at all times unless they are eating. Shanghai Disneyland said it's taking "a deliberate approach" as it reopens. It will require physical distancing and sharply reduce capacity; some crowd-oriented features, such as children's play areas and theater shows, will remain shut down. There will be no selfies with famous Disney characters, the company said. Hand sanitizer is being widely deployed, and cleaning measures have been stepped up. Before they can enter the park, visitors will also need to prove they don't pose a coronavirus risk. They will undergo a temperature screening and a check of their personal QR code — reflecting their "green" or "red" status on a phone-based app. A green code, signaling

Data Engineer, Enterprise Partnerships (Remote)

This is a direct hire to my team, which is the client-facing arm of Superconductive. We're a really great company - a distributed team of kind, smart, interesting people who treat each other like human beings. Full job description is below - feel free to reach out with questions!

Our mission

Superconductive’s mission is to revolutionize the speed and integrity of data collaboration. We are the team behind Great Expectations, the leading open source tool for defeating pipeline debt through data testing, documentation, and profiling. Data teams all over the world use Great Expectations to boost the confidence, integrity, and speed of their work.

About the role

As a Data Engineer on Superconductive’s Enterprise Partnerships team, you will directly contribute to the success of our partnerships with enterprise clients. You will be responsible for owning the end-to-end process of designing, building, and deploying data pipelines, using Great Expectations for data validation and testing. As part of this, you will be exposed to a wide variety of clients, industries, and types of data infrastructure.

You will be expected to:

Develop a deep understanding of client needs and goals, as well as their existing data infrastructure
Design, build, and deploy different pieces of data pipeline infrastructure, such as tools for ETL, data warehousing, and workflow orchestration
Train our clients in best practices for building, maintaining, and validating their data pipelines
Synthesize learnings from client work and identify high value product improvements to feed back into Great Expectations

As part of Superconductive, you will also have opportunities to evangelize Great Expectations through conference talks, workshops, and blog posts, if you choose to do so.

Why join Superconductive?

Glad you asked!

We offer…

A world class team, with deep roots in open source, cutting-edge software and data development. We are actively cultivating a new cultural blend of excellent data engineering and AI-enabled technical workflows.

A fast-growing company with lots of opportunity for learning and personal growth.

A front-row seat to the rapid evolution of data science and engineering. Data work is going through a renaissance, and—as the leading provider of a key piece in the new technology ecosystem—Superconductive is right in the middle of it.

A kind, curious, and open-minded company culture. We are always seeking ways to improve ourselves and our processes; we keep these conversations open to the whole team. We prioritize empowering our team members rather than a command and control hierarchy.

A distributed team with lots of flexibility around timing and individual work preferences. We currently have teammates in the San Francisco Bay Area, Salt Lake City, New York, Michigan, North Carolina, and other places. We’d love to add your town.

And of course, competitive compensation (base salary + equity package) with available Medical, Dental, Vision & 401K.

Job requirements

Minimum two years of work experience as a data engineer or in a role with responsibilities including:
Design, implementation, and maintenance/management of data pipelines
Implementation and management of SQL databases

Proficiency in SQL and Python

Proficiency in engineering tools and best practices, such as version control and testing

Experience with data analytics and relevant tooling (e.g. Python data stack, R)

An excitement for interacting with clients and digging deep into new (to you) technologies and domains

Strong candidates for this role will most likely come from backgrounds in either data engineering or data science. We are looking for people with substantial experience building data pipelines, or experience developing software with a close affinity to data and analytics.

Great engineering is more than just technical proficiency. Our team is set up to support and build the following cultural skills. We don’t expect black-belt virtuosity. We do expect everyone to bring good ideas and habits, so that they can contribute to a collective culture of best practices.

Have data in your blood - the more curiosity you have about a wide variety of data from all walks of life, the better.

Communicate well—in writing, in person, and on Slack.

Be good at time management (e.g. estimating timelines, prioritizing tasks, avoiding rabbit holes, speaking up when you need help).

Possess keen antennae for the lived experience of technical work. We constantly seek out opportunities for delightful refactors to tools, workflows, and collaboration, gathering ideas from all team members.

Commit to a culture of transparency, cooperation, and mutual support in an entirely distributed team.

Play nice with others. Assholes need not apply.

Nice to haves

Experience in a client-facing role, e.g. sales engineering, implementations, forward deployed engineering

Project management experience

Experience with domain-specific data in multiple industries (e.g. healthcare, ad-tech, e-commerce)

Advanced skills in data analytics, statistics, or machine learning

Devops and data infrastructure skills are a plus (e.g. workflow orchestration tools, containerization)

Experience with software engineering, and possibly contributions to open source projects

Superconductive Health, Inc. is an Equal Opportunity Employer. In compliance with Federal law and the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) 22.1800, the selected candidate will be required to provide documentation that will verify their identity and eligibility to work in the United States.

When After-School Is Shut Down, Too

When Jessyka Bagdon set out to move her tap dancing classes online, big questions started popping up right away: What about kids who don't own their own tap shoes? How to tap dance at home without ruining the floor? And then came the really big challenge: Online programs like Zoom are designed for meetings, not dance classes. "They're made to pick up voices," she explains, not the clickety clack of tap-dancing shoes. "So how do we make the system not filter out our tap sounds as background noise?" So Blagdon, an instructor at 'Knock on Wood Tap Studio' in Washington, D.C., set about problem-solving. No tap shoes? Turns out Mary Jane flats work well. Saving the floor? A piece of plywood does the trick. And that muffled sound over Zoom? Blagdon says fiddling around with some computer settings can help. In the nation's capital, like the rest of the country, kids cooped up at home for weeks now are craving both physical activity and the mental and creative challenges that extracurricular

Well, a Harvard analysis conducted exclusively for NPR suggests the answer broadly is no. KING: NPR science reporter Rob Stein has the details of that analysis. Good morning, Rob. ROB STEIN, BYLINE: Good morning, Noel. KING: So what does it show us? STEIN: It's based on estimates of the size of each state's outbreak, how much testing they're doing and how much testing they'd need to do to keep their outbreaks from, you know, spinning out of control. The Harvard analysis found nine states do seem to be doing at least the bare minimum amount of testing they'd need to reopen. But the other 41 states, plus the District of Columbia, are still not doing enough testing

Students Call College That Got Millions In Coronavirus Relief 'A Sham'

A for-profit college received millions of dollars from the federal government to help low-income students whose lives have been upended by the coronavirus outbreak, but that same school, Florida Career College (FCC), is also accused of defrauding students. A federal class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of students in April calls FCC "a sham" and alleges that, long before the pandemic, the college was targeting economically vulnerable people of color. The plaintiffs say the vocational school enticed them with false promises of career training and job placement — but spent little on instruction while charging exorbitant prices and pushing students into loans they cannot repay. The lawsuit comes as thousands of colleges across the country are receiving federal emergency relief in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Through the CARES Act, FCC has been allotted $17 million. The law requires that at least half of that money goes directly to students, but makes few stipulations for the rest

Basho poems

Each day, I post a Basho poem. These are my own translations.

Although Basho mostly keeps to the haiku form (5-7-5) I haven't kept that restriction. Some translations follow that form when possible. I do keep it to three lines and keep the rhythm haiku-like (short, long, short) with the 1st and 3rd often the same length. For each translation the goal is to find a balance. Translation, especially with poetry, is often seen as an impossible task. That is the case here. In that sense, these texts are not Basho but inspired by him.
The source is various Japanese sites but primarily this one: http://www2.yamanashi-ken.ac.jp/~itoyo/basho/
There are a number of Basho translations out there. Some are very literal while others are more daring. I admire the translations of Lucien Stryk.

SWEDISH RISING STAR NÁPOLES UNVEILS NEW SINGLE ‘CIRCULATE’

CHAMPIONED BY BBC 1XTRA, RINSE FM, SPOTIFY, KINGSIZE MAGAZINE, DSTNGR

STREAM ‘CIRCULATE’ HERE: https://open.spotify.com/album/06XeOLQyZ8FSRTjtqgcw05

Coming on the back of the success of her debut single ‘Slowzy’, which has been garnering support from the likes of BBC 1Xtra, Rinse FM, Spotify, DSTNGR, Kingsize Magazine, and PUMA, among others, fast-rising Swedish songstress and creative NÁPOLES is excited to release her brand new single titled ‘CIRCULATE’, serving as the second offering from her forthcoming debut EP Slowin It, which is due for release later this summer.

Raised in Stockholm, with Cuban and Russian heritage, Nápoles has always been surrounded by music, but her love affair with music started at the very young age of 8, after her first family visit to Cuba. She grew up on hip-hop, house, dancehall and gospel music, whether it was as a young street- style dancer, or as a 15-year old singer in youth choirs such as Joyful Noise and the Tensta Gospel Choir, which helped her develop her own musical language.

Fast-forward to 2020, and alongside her blossoming music career, Nápoles is also one-third of the popular Swedish-based DJ and creative collective Ladieslovehiphop, with whom she has opened for Beyonce and Jay-Z on their ‘On The Run II’ European tour, collaborated with adidas and PUMA, toured with Sweden’s biggest female rapper Silvana Imam, and collaborated with Red Bull Music to host the Ladieslovehiphop Music Festival, among other accomplishments.

Her new single ‘Circulate’ is produced by fellow Swedish creatives Chapee and Wihib Sulaiman, and co-written by herself and Joe Lefty, and the track sees Nápoles excellently weaving her laidback musical stylings, enchanting vocals, and captivatingly vivid songwriting, together with her lush soul, hip- hop, R&B and jazz sensibilities, to create an undeniably smooth and infectious offering, making the Swedish rising star two for two on homeruns in 2020.

For the ‘Circulate’ visuals, Nápoles has collaborated with fellow Ladieslovehiphop member Namarijana, video director Gustav Andersson, and cinematographer Daniel Edin, to capture a portrait of a night out with Nápoles. The visuals showcase the vibrant energy of a Ladieslovehiphop evening, underpinned by laughter, love and community. Shot in Stockholm, where Nápoles is currently based, the sensual and lively visuals showcase the transcendent feel-good energy and essence, not only of the track, but also of her Ladieslovehiphop movement.

Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Circulate’, Nápoles says, “the inspiration comes from my everyday life. I wrote ‘Circulate’ at a time when I was thinking about the universe, space and how everything is connected. At night, I would watch ‘Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey’ and read books of that nature, and during the day at work, I would daydream a lot about these themes. I was also figuring myself out as an artist, and the exploration of my sound, combined with all these thoughts, led to the making of ‘Circulate’. I want my music to be fun, smooth and energetic at the same time, and I think that comes across on this song”.

Compared to the lockdowns and shuttered businesses in countries across the world, Sweden is an outlier. Swedish officials have advised citizens to work from home and avoid travel, but most schools and businesses have remained open. This relaxed approach aims to minimize impact on the economy, and slow the spread of the virus through what is known as “herd immunity.” Now, as the U.S. weighs further spreading the disease against the impact of a tanked economy, some Americans — particularly conservatives — are looking toward Sweden’s model as an option. Billy Joe Shaver: Field Session

Billy Joe Shaver might not be the household name that other country musicians of his generation are but the Texas native who still calls Waco home used to run with Willie Nelson and famously threatened Waylon Jennings to make good on a promise to record his songs. Jennings kept the promise and the album "Honky Tonk Heroes," comprised mainly of tunes penned by Shaver, is a classic of country music. But before that, Billy Joe Shaver was a laborer and a cowboy. It took losing three fingers on his strumming hand at a lumber mill before he made a deal with God to do what he felt he was supposed to do: write songs. In this Field Session from the Capitol Theatre in Macon, listen to Billy Joe Shaver talk about those early days. From the Field Note Stenographers and GPB Music. https://youtu.be/Lu3BfDjbnfA
