OSCE workshop in Kosovo focuses on improving the recording of hate crimes

A two-day workshop on  ways to improve the recording of hate crimes  was organized on 11 and 12 July in Prishtinë/Priština by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), the OSCE Mission in Kosovo and the Kosovo Police.

In addition to reinforcing their understanding of the OSCE’s approach to hate crime, workshop participants identified a series of additional improvements in the way local authorities monitor and record hate crimes. Participants also agreed to establish a permanent national mechanism to co-ordinate hate crime data collection.

"Police recording is the key point of entry for information about hate crimes into the criminal justice system. But, the police cannot operate alone," said Ales Giao Hanek, ODIHR Hate Crime Officer. "Co-ordination between all the agencies concerned is crucial, and political support will be required to make the changes identified and agreed upon by participants."

Workshop participants included Kosovo Police specialists responsible for recording and managing crime statistics from all eight policing districts. Police and Prosecution Service focal points on hate crimes took part, as well as representatives from the Kosovo Judicial Institute.

This workshop follows up on an event held in May 2015, which mapped hate crime data collection in Kosovo.

Nokia 6.1 and recording

The nokia 6.1 came out at the beginning of 2018.
It is under the android one program, which means that it is running stock android.
Also it gets updates faster than other phones.
At the time of writing, I am waiting to get android 9.0 pie on my phone which some nokia 6.1 users started receiving already.

I am using hi-q mp3 recorder pro for my tests.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hiqrecorder.full

Probably you will get similar results with amazing mp3 recorder, but I am more familiar with hi-q mp3 so I am using this one instead.

In hi-q mp3 recorder we have got 5 available microphone options with in settings.
Front microphone which is enabled by default, rear microphone if available, raw audio no pre processing, device default and unprosessed raw.

The last option unprosessed raw, is available only for android 7 and above. I don't find this option on my nexus5 which is on android 6.01.

On the nokia 6.1, the 3 options front microphone, raw audio no pre processing and device default, don't give good results either in mono or stereo.
Noise cancelation is used, similar to the nexus5, and the gain volume is pritty high.
This is also the type of sound you get if you send voice messages in facebook messenger, watsapp and viber.
The gain is not as high, but you get noise cancelation.
Your voice sounds nice and clear, but don't expect to capture the surrounding atmosphere if you are out and about at the sea, the garden etc.

Only the options rear microphone if available and unprocessed raw are giving good results.

In mono, the rear microphone option is much louder than unprosessed raw, but the result is good for both without noise cancelation.

When stereo is enabled, both options are pritty much the same in my oppinion.

When stereo is enabled, the left microphone is the one on the top where the headphones juck is, and the right one is on the bottom where the usb port and speaker is.

When recording in stereo, to avoid distortions, it's better in my opinion to have the gain at 80 or 85 percent.
You can always use a sound editor later to change the volumes.
It's much easier to make a quiet recording louder, but if it is distorted it's pritty impossible to fix it.

Personal comments about the stereo recording.

The over all result is good.
I would say it is impressive for a phone which costs 270 dollars or less.

I have got the impression that the right microphone is slightly louder than the left, and perhaps some more bass would be better.
The highs are very good, maybe a bit too much, but for my needs they are welcome because I want to record bird sounds especially during Spring.

Finally it wouldn't be possible to talk about recording without a sample.

The following recording is about 7 minutes and 30 seconds long and there are 3 parts in it.

Part1 is very short. It's a car passing from right to left in front of me.
Part2 is the longest. It is some general ambianse from the ikea restaurant in Nicosia Cyprus.
Finally part3 is a short sample of a music practice.

You can use the link below to have a listen.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/x7036rjgq5ak9vc/Nokia%206.1%20stereo%20demo.mp...

Android pie and recording.

With the update to android pie on this phone, it is not possible to make long recordings with the screen locked.
After 30 or 40 minutes of recording, the microphones are muted and the rest of the recording is completely silent.

Unfortunately the only work around is to keep screen on during the recording to make sure that all the sounds will be captured without interruption.

In hi-q mp3 settings, unfortunately we have got the option to keep screen on under trouble shooting settings.
We have got the options to dim the screen during recording or to use it with the brightness we use any other time when the screen is on.

Unfortunately this method will use more battery but for now I couldn't find anything else.

I hope this issue will be fixed with a future update.
I know the intention was good. Probably they wanted to protect us from programs which might watch the microphone and camera without our attention but this functionality is useful for some other apps.

I will update this article if nokia fix this issue.
Thanks for reading.

Podcast Audio Recording Tips

Before you begin podcasting develop a plan and a format for your show. Determine the focus of your podcast and what types of guests you would like to interview. Time spent planning your show will contribute to it's success.

Location, Location, Location
When you are producing a podcast on a regular basis it is important that you select an appropriate location for the recording to take place. The location should be free of external distractions and relatively quiet. It is easiest if you use the same location each time, that way the equipment can remain in place and will not require moving or setup each time you produce a show.

Automatically generate Shownotes, Summaries and Chapters from Recordings

We're thrilled to introduce our Automatic Shownotes and Chapters feature. This AI-powered tool effortlessly generates concise summaries, intuitive chapter timestamps and relevant keywords for your podcasts, audio and video files.
See our Examples and the How To section below for details.

Why do I need Shownotes and Chapters?

In addition to links and other information, shownotes contain short summaries of the main topics of your episode, and inserted chapter marks allow you to timestamp sections with different topics of a podcast or video. This makes your content more accessible and user-friendly, enabeling listeners to quickly navigate to specific sections of the episode or find a previous episode to brush up on a particular topic.

Shownotes are also very likely to boost your show's Search Engine Optimization and eventually its popularity, leading to an increase in listeners.

However, especially structuring the content and finding useful positions for chapter marks is a very time-consuming process, that can be fully automated with our new feature.

Besides the obvious use of creating shownotes and chapters for podcasts, you can also use our new feature to easily generate an abstract of your lecture recording, take the summary of your show as the starting point for a social media post, or choose your favourite chapter title as the podcast name.

What happens behind the Scenes?

When the Automatic Shownotes and Chapters feature is selected, the first step is speech transcription by either our internal Auphonic Whisper ASR or any integrated External ASR Service of your choice.

Some open source tools and ChatGPT will then summarize the ASR resulting text in different levels of detail, analyze the content to identify sections with the different topics discussed, and finally complete each section with timestamps for easy navigation.
Beginning with the generation of a Long Summary, the number of characters is further reduced for a Brief Summary and from the brief summary a Subtitle and some Keywords for the main topics are extracted.

Depending on the duration of the input audio or video file, the level of detail of the thematic sections is also slightly adjusted, resulting in a reasonable number of chapters for very short 5-minute audio files as well as for long 180-minute audio files.

How to automatically generate Shownotes and Chapters in Auphonic

If you are a paying or beta user, you can automatically generate shownotes and chapters by checking the Automatic Shownotes and Chapters Checkbox in the Auphonic singletrack or multitrack Production Form with any of our ASR Services enabled.
Once your production is done, the generated data will show up in your transcript result files and in the well-known Auphonic Transcript Editor above the speech recognition transcript section.
By clicking on a chapter title in the Chapters section of the transcript editor, you can jump directly to that chapter in your transcript to review and edit that section.

Unless you have manually entered content before, the generated data will also be automatically stored in your audio files' metadata as follows:

  • Generated Long Summary stored in metadata field Summary.
  • Generated Subtitle stored in metadata field Subtitle.
  • Generated Keywords stored in metadata field Tags.
  • Generated Timestamps for thematic sections stored as Start Time of Chapters Marks.
  • Generated Headlines for thematic sections stored as Chapter Title of Chapters Marks.
The metadata is automatically displayed with your audio file wherever you import your audio for further editing.

Please note that not all of our supported Output File Formats are designed to use metadata.
For details see our previous blog posts: ID3 Tags Metadata (used in MP3 output files), Vorbis Comment Metadata (used in FLAC, Opus and Ogg Vorbis output files) and MPEG-4 iTunes-style Metadata (used in AAC, M4A/M4B/MP4 and ALAC output files).

Example

As a real-life example, we automatically generated shownotes and chapters for the Lex Fridman Podcast #367: "Sam Altman: OpenAI CEO on GPT-4, ChatGPT, and the Future of AI".

Check out our transcript and generated shownotes:
LexFridmanPodcast367-transcript.html

Conclusion

The automatic generation of shownotes and chapters is a huge time-saver for podcasters and video creators, as it speeds up the tedious process of manually structuring and summarizing your content.

For now it is available for all paying or beta users. If you would like to become a beta user, or have any questions or feedback, please do not hesitate to contact us!

Over time, his mother (who was also a scientist within a pharmaceutical company) recorded different tracks and they pretty much went unheard.

Screen Recording on iOS and iPadOS: Tips and Tricks for Beginners

In this episode, Thomas Domville teaches you how to use Screen Recording on iOS and iPadOS.

Screen Recording is a feature that allows you to capture what's happening on your screen. This can be useful for creating tutorials, demos, or simply sharing something interesting with your friends and family.

To set up this feature, go to Settings > Control Center and double-tap the "Insert Screen Recording" button under the "more controls" heading. To create a recording, open Control Center by placing your finger on the top edge of the device until you hear a tone, and sliding it straight down until you hear the second tone (devices without a Home button) or placing your finger on the status bar and swiping up with three fingers (devices with a Home button). Double-tap the Screen Recording button; there will be a three-second countdown before recording starts.

To stop recording, either press the Side button to lock the device, double-tap the Screen Recording button in Control Center again, or double-tap the screen recording button in the status bar. By default, the recording will be saved to your Photos library, however this can be changed if you wish by focusing on the "Screen recording" button in Control Center and choosing the "open controls" rotor action.
