Innovative Pedagogical Strategies of Streaming, Just-in-Time Teaching, and Scaffolding: A Case Study of Using Videos to Add Business Analytics Instruction Across a Curriculum

Aim/Purpose: Business analytics is a cross-functional field that is important to implement for a college and has emerged as a critically important core component of the business curriculum. It is a difficult task due to scheduling concerns and limits to faculty and student resources. This paper describes the process of creating a central video repository to serve as a platform for just in time teaching and the impact on student learning outcomes. Background: Industry demand for employees with analytical knowledge, skills, and abilities requires additional analytical content throughout the college of business curriculum. This demand needs other content to be added to ensure that students have the prerequisite skills to complete assignments. Two pedagogical approaches to address this issue are Just-in-Time Teaching (JiTT) and scaffolding, grounded in the Vygoskian concept of “Zone of Proximal Development. Methodology: This paper presents a case study that applies scaffolding and JiTT teaching to create a video repository to add business analytics instruction to a curriculum. The California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST) and Major Field Test (MFT) scores were analyzed to assess learning outcomes. Student and faculty comments were considered to inform the results of the review. Contribution: This paper demonstrates a practical application of scaffolding and JiTT theory by outlining the process of using a video library to provide valuable instructional resources that support meaningful learning, promote student academic achievement, and improve program flexibility. Findings: A centrally created library is a simple and inexpensive way to provide business analytics course content, augmenting standard content delivery. Assessment of learning scores showed an improvement, and a summary of lessons learned is provided to guide implications. Recommendations for Practitioners: Pedagogical implications of this research include the observation that producing a central library of instructor created videos and assignments can help address knowledge and skills gaps, augment the learning of business analytics content, and provide a valuable educational resource throughout the college of business curriculum. Recommendation for Researchers: This paper examines the use of scaffolding and JiTT theories. Additional examination of these theories may improve the understanding and limits of these concepts as higher education evolves due to the combination of market forces changing the execution of course delivery. Impact on Society: Universities are tasked with providing new and increasing skills to students while controlling the costs. A centrally created library of instructional videos provides a means of delivering meaningful content while controlling costs. Future Research: Future research may examine student success, including the immediate impact of videos and longitudinally using video repositories throughout the curriculum. Studies examining the approach across multiple institutions may help to evaluate the success of video repositories. Faculty acceptance of centrally created video libraries and assignments should be considered for the value of faculty recruiting and use in the classroom. The economic impact on both the university and students should be evaluated.

The Effect of Perceived Support on Repatriate Knowledge Transfer in MNCs: The Mediating Role of Repatriate Adjustment

Aim/Purpose: The present study examines the effect of perceived organisational and co-worker support on the adjustment of repatriates and its impact on their intention to transfer knowledge in multinational companies (MNCs). It also examines the relationship between perceived organisational support, co-worker support, and knowledge transfer through the mediating role of repatriate adjustment. Background: The ability of acquiring and utilising international knowledge is one of the core competitive advantages of MNCs. This knowledge is transferred by MNCs across their subsidiaries efficiently through repatriates, which will result in superior performance when compared to their local competitors. But in MNCs the expatriation process has been given more emphasis than the repatriation process; therefore, there is limited knowledge about repatriation knowledge transfer. Practically, the knowledge transferred by repatriates is not managed properly by the MNCs. Methodology: The proposed model was supported by Uncertainty Reduction Theory, Organisational Socialisation Theory, Organisational Support Theory, and Socialisation Resource Theory. The data were gathered from 246 repatriates working in Indian MNCs in the manufacturing and information technology sectors who had been on an international assignment for at least one year. The data obtained were analysed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using AMOS 21 software. Contribution: The present study expands prior research on repatriate knowledge transfer by empirically investigating the mediating role of repatriate adjustment between perceived support and repatriate knowledge transfer in MNCs. The present study also highlights that organisational and co-worker support during repatriation is beneficial for repatriate knowledge transfer. It is important that MNCs initiate support practices during repatriation to motivate repatriates to transfer international knowledge. Findings: The results revealed that both perceived organisational and co-worker support had a significant role in predicting repatriate adjustment in MNCs. Furthermore, the results also revealed that perceived organisational and co-worker support increases repatriate knowledge transfer through repatriate adjustment in MNCs. Recommendations for Practitioners: This study indicates the role of management in motivating repatriates to transfer their knowledge to the organisation. The management of MNCs develop HR policies and strategies leading to high perceived organisational support, co-worker support, and repatriate adjustment. They need to pay particular attention to the factors that affect the repatriates’ intention to share knowledge with others in the organisation. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers can use the validated measurement instrument which could be essential for the advancement of future empirical research on repatriate knowledge transfer. Impact on Society: The present study will assist MNCs in managing their repatriates during the repatriation process by developing an appropriate repatriation support system. This will help the repatriates to better adjust to their repatriation process which will motivate them to transfer the acquired knowledge. Future Research: Future research can adopt a longitudinal style to test the different levels of the adjustment process which will help in better understanding the repatriate adjustment process. Additionally, this model can be tested with the repatriates of other countries and in diverse cultures to confirm its external validity. Furthermore, future research can be done with the repatriates who go on an international assignment through their own initiative (self-initiated expatriates).

A Study of Anglo Expatriate Managers' Learning, Knowledge Acquisition, and Adjustment in Multi-National Companies in China

This study investigates Anglo expatriate managers learning, knowledge acquisition, and adjustment to the host culture when working within Anglo multi-national companies operating in China. A structural equation model based on data from 121 expatriate managers reveal that Anglo managers adjust more effectively when their learning styles are congruent with the demands of the host culture. Their levels of accumulated managerial tacit knowledge and adaptive flexibility were also associated with their learning styles which in turn led to more effective adjustment to the host culture. Implications for theory, global manager development, and expatriate management are provided.

When Justice Promotes Injustice: Why Minority Leaders Experience Bias When They Adhere to Interpersonal Justice Rules

Accumulated knowledge on organizational justice leaves little reason to doubt the notion that organizational members benefit when leaders adhere to interpersonal justice rules. However, upon considering how justice behaviors influence subordinates' cognitive processes, we predict that interpersonal justice has a surprising, unintended negative consequence. Supervisors who violate interpersonal justice rules trigger subordinates to search for reasons why their supervisors are threatening them, causing subordinates to be more attuned to supervisors' individual characteristics and therefore unlikely to use stereotypes when evaluating them. In contrast, supervisors who adhere to interpersonal justice rules allow subordinates to divert attention away from them, leading subordinates' judgments of their supervisors to be influenced by stereotypes. Consistent with these predictions, in a survey we found that minority supervisors faced bias relative to Caucasian supervisors when supervisors adhered to—but not when they violated—interpersonal justice rules. We replicated this effect in an experiment and established that it is explained by an alternating pattern of stereotype activation and inhibition: participants viewed minority supervisors to be more deceitful than Caucasians when supervisors adhered to—but not when they violated—interpersonal justice rules. We then conducted exploratory analyses and identified one factor (unit size) that mitigates this troubling pattern.

Justin Welby resigns as Archbishop of Canterbury over abuse scandal

LONDON: The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby resigned on Tuesday, saying he stepped down “in sorrow” after failing to ensure there was a proper investigation into allegations of abuse by a volunteer at Christian summer camps decades ago.

Welby, the spiritual leader of 85 million Anglicans worldwide, had faced calls to resign after a report last week found he had taken insufficient action to stop a person it described as arguably the Church of England’s most prolific serial abuser.

“Having sought the gracious permission of His Majesty The King, I have decided to resign as Archbishop of Canterbury,“ Welby said in a statement.

“I hope this decision makes clear how seriously the Church of England understands the need for change and our profound commitment to creating a safer church. As I step down I do so in sorrow with all victims and survivors of abuse.”

Analog Equivalent Rights (13/21): Our digital children are tracked not just in everything they buy, but in what they DON’T buy

Privacy: We’ve seen how our digital children’s privacy is violated in everything they buy with cash or credit, in a way our analog parents would have balked at. But even worse: our digital children’s privacy is also violated by tracking what they don’t buy — either actively decline or just plain walk away from.

Amazon just opened its first “Amazon Go” store, where you just pick things into a bag and leave, without ever going through a checkout process. As part of the introduction of this concept, Amazon points out that you can pick something off the shelves, at which point it’ll register in your purchase — and change your mind and put it back, at which point you’ll be registered and logged as having not purchased the item.

Sure, you’re not paying for something you changed your mind about, which is the point of the video presentation. But it’s not just about the deduction from your total amount to pay: Amazon also knows you considered buying it and eventually didn’t, and will be using that data.

Our digital children are tracked this way on a daily basis, if not an hourly basis. Our analog parents never were.

When we’re shopping for anything online, there are even simple plugins for the most common merchant solutions with the business terms “funnel analysis” — where in the so-called “purchase funnel” our digital children choose to leave the process of purchasing something — or “cart abandonment analysis”.

We can’t even simply walk away from something anymore without it being recorded, logged, and cataloged for later use against us.

But so-called “cart abandonment” is only one part of the bigger issue of tracking what we’re interested in in the age of our digital children, but didn’t buy. There is no shortage of people today who would swear they were just discussing a very specific type of product with their phone present (say, “black leather skirts”) and all of a sudden, advertising for that very specific type of product would pop up all over Facebook and/or Amazon ads. Is this really due to some company listening for keywords through the phone? Maybe, maybe not. All we know since Snowden is that if it’s technically possible to invade privacy, it is already happening.

(We have to assume here these people still need to learn how to install a simple adblocker. But still.)

At the worst ad-dense places, like (but not limited to) airports, there are eyeball trackers to find out which ads you look at. They don’t yet change to match your interests, as per Minority Report, but that’s already present on your phone and on your desktop, and so wouldn’t be foreign to see in public soon, either.

In the world of our analog parents, we weren’t registered and tracked when we bought something.

In the world of our digital children, we’re registered and tracked even when we don’t buy something.

Just As I Am

England, early 1800’s.

It was a season that instituted a fusion of ideals. Religious power began to merge with political agenda, creating a platform of social reform that influenced an entire country.

It was within this time that Charlotte Elliot was born.

Charlotte was strong, opinionated, and deeply genuine. Her father was a reverend and leader within the Clapham Sect, a powerful religious and social activist group. They were the families that eventually championed the abolition of slavery throughout the British empire, just to give a little context.

Basically, Charlotte was born into an evangelical legacy.

However, as I’m sure many of us “PK’s” can understand, she tended to reject her roots for the first half of her life. She refused to acknowledge a personal relationship with Jesus, not because she didn’t believe, but because she didn’t feel worthy.

Her worldview was rooted in a belief that her sin nature was beyond what the cross could accomplish. Yikes. I can personally relate to that. Can you?

Growing up in the church, she was constantly encouraged to be more active within the community. She was pushed to serve in various roles, but she always fought back. She was weighted by her fear of inadequacy and lack of forgiveness. She just couldn’t wrap her head around the fact that God would see her, let alone allow her to make any kind of impact.

She spent the first half of her life in devastating fear, frozen in the lie that she was not qualified to serve and too human to be saved. She kept a low profile, only attending the mandatory, relying on her silence to hide her true heart in the midst of clergy and reform.

And then it happened. In her early 30’s, Charlotte fell ill. So ill, in fact, it forced her into the isolating life of an invalid. She could no longer leave her home, walk any considerable distance, or serve in any capacity. She wasn’t allowed to join her family at church, or visit friends. She was alone, in constant pain, and faithless.

Depressed yet? Yeh I was too. Just hang in there. It’s Easter. I promise to stay in the “that’s not the end of the story!” theme.

After years of bed-ridden illness, Charlotte was visited by an old friend. A pastor from Switzerland who had strong ties with her family. He sat with her and talked, attempting to speak life over what she deemed a death sentence. He began to ask her about her relationship with God, a question she still refused to face. She dismissed every effort to discuss her spirituality and eventually dismissed the pastor as well.

And yet, his words stuck. His gentle encouragement and passion for Jesus inspired her. She felt so lost and so broken, and this man took time out of his life to tell her she wasn’t. I wish I could’ve heard the exact words he said to her that day, because whatever they were, they were powerful enough to invoke conversion. She met with him days later, told him her story of unworthiness, and asked him to help her find Jesus.

His response? “Come just as you are.”

And that was it. She gave her life to Jesus. And her life was completely and radically changed.

The world continued to view Charlotte as an invalid. Broken, dismissed, and isolated. And even with this new found life in Christ, she continued to sink deeper into her feelings of inadequacy. She'd been labeled INVALID, and now that she actually had the heart for service and evangelism, she was unable to have any effect. What a dark realization, a nail in a coffin.

One night, in the midst of a town revival, Charlotte was grieving over her inability to attend and be a part of her church community. She desperately wanted to be involved. In her heartbreak, she felt led to write. She began versing a song, stanza by stanza, knowing it was the only form of encouragement she had in her helpless state of mind. She had to believe what Jesus believed. She remembered the precious words the pastor had spoken over her years prior.

“Come just as you are.”

It sparked a lyric, that sparked a melody, that lead to a hymn I’m sure you’ll remember well…

Just as I am, without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, though tossed about
With many a conflict, many a doubt,
Fightings and fears within, without,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need in Thee to find,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am, Thy love unknown
Hath broken every barrier down;
Now, to be Thine, yea, Thine alone,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

With the Easter season behind us, I am still so in awe of the cross. Charlotte understood the WEIGHT of Calvary. She understood sin nature, she understood humanity. What she found difficult to rationalize was GRACE. And that’s the point, isn’t it? Jesus died so that we could live, and live in freedom.

Even when we feel invalid, even when we believe we are incapable or unworthy of service, the fact remains that we were worth saving in Jesus’ eyes. What a precious gift, what a beautiful acceptance. Charlotte believed her life would have no effect because she was tied down by circumstances. But God truly does love us and lead us where we are at. We can come just as we are and He will continue to use us day after day if our hearts are open.

Charlotte Elliot continued to write hymns, which eventually lead to a full songbook under the title “Hymns for the Invalid.” It doesn’t get much more powerful than that, ya’ll. Her legacy lives on, despite her belief that she had nothing to offer. And that is our God, isn’t it?

He died for your heart, He rose for your freedom. If you feel unworthy of that gift today, welcome to the club. You’re absolutely correct. But the Word says to “walk boldly before your God.” Don’t let that feeling of unworthiness overpower God’s truth. The blood covered you, the cross gave you purpose.

So rise and walk in that knowledge. Embrace your calling and write the song, sing the lyric, lead the team, play the piano, do the work it takes to share the glory of what you know to be true. Invite others to come just as they are and see what that does for your ministry. Leave a legacy, inspire change, and walk in the boldness required to share grace.

"Just as I am, and waiting not…” Don’t wait. You have the truth and you are not invalid. Go. Believe it, walk in it, SHARE IT.

Honeywell Pro-Watch Kit Deployed to Protect Federal Justice Complex in Mexico
