MS13-005 HWND_BROADCAST Low to Medium Integrity Privilege Escalation

The Windows kernel does not properly isolate broadcast messages from low integrity applications from medium or high integrity applications. This allows commands to be broadcasted to an open medium or high integrity command prompts allowing escalation of privileges. We can spawn a medium integrity command prompt, after spawning a low integrity command prompt, by using the Win+Shift+# combination to specify the position of the command prompt on the taskbar. We can then broadcast our command and hope that the user is away and doesn't corrupt it by interacting with the UI. Broadcast issue affects versions Windows Vista, 7, 8, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2, Server 2012, RT. But Spawning a command prompt with the shortcut key does not work in Vista so you will have to check if the user is already running a command prompt and set SPAWN_PROMPT false. The WEB technique will execute a powershell encoded payload from a Web location. The FILE technique will drop an executable to the file system, set it to medium integrity and execute it. The TYPE technique will attempt to execute a powershell encoded payload directly from the command line but it may take some time to complete.

Solaris 11.4 xscreensaver Privilege Escalation

Solaris version 11.4 xscreensaver local privilege escalation exploit.

scala

Solaris xscreensaver Privilege Escalation

This Metasploit module exploits a vulnerability in xscreensaver versions since 5.06 on unpatched Solaris 11 systems which allows users to gain root privileges. xscreensaver allows users to create a user-owned file at any location on the filesystem using the -log command line argument introduced in version 5.06. This module uses xscreensaver to create a log file in /usr/lib/secure/, overwrites the log file with a shared object, and executes the shared object using the LD_PRELOAD environment variable. This module has been tested successfully on xscreensaver version 5.15 on Solaris 11.1 (x86) and xscreensaver version 5.15 on Solaris 11.3 (x86).

SunOS 5.10 Generic_147148-26 Local Privilege Escalation

SunOS version 5.10 Generic_147148-26 local privilege escalation exploit. A buffer overflow in the CheckMonitor() function in the Common Desktop Environment versions 2.3.1 and earlier and 1.6 and earlier, as distributed with Oracle Solaris 10 1/13 (Update 11) and earlier, allows local users to gain root privileges via a long palette name passed to dtsession in a malicious .Xdefaults file.

scala

Common Desktop Environment 1.6 Local Privilege Escalation

A buffer overflow in the _SanityCheck() function in the Common Desktop Environment version distributed with Oracle Solaris 10 1/13 (Update 11) and earlier allows local users to gain root privileges via a long calendar name or calendar owner passed to sdtcm_convert in a malicious calendar file. The open source version of CDE (based on the CDE 2.x codebase) is not affected, because it does not ship the vulnerable program. Versions 1.6 and below are affected.

smtp_mailaddr in smtp_session.c in OpenSMTPD 6.6, as used in OpenBSD 6.6 and other products, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands as root via a crafted SMTP session, as demonstrated by shell meta-characters in a MAIL FROM field. This affects the "uncommented" default configuration. The issue exists because of an incorrect return value upon failure of input validation.

Nationalist Rhetoric Fanning Escalation of East Asia Territorial Disputes

By Edward J. Shultz

(Note: This commentary originally appeared in The Honolulu Star-Advertiser on Oct. 16, 2012)

The recent eruption of protests throughout the Muslim world points once again to the stability of our globe being threatened by people with the intransigence of fundamentalists. It was fundamentalists in the United States who produced a reprehensible video vilifying the Islamic faith, and it was fundamentalists throughout the world who took to the streets to protest this affront to their faith and culture. In East Asia we are witnessing a somewhat similar escalation of tensions as fundamentalists in China, Korea and Japan push these three countries down an increasingly volatile path leading to growing animosities. And regrettably this is a verbal slugfest among U.S. allies and friends.

Phase I Dose-Escalation and -Expansion Study of Telisotuzumab (ABT-700), an Anti-c-Met Antibody, in Patients with Advanced Solid Tumors

This first-in-human phase I study evaluated the pharmacokinetics, safety, and preliminary efficacy of telisotuzumab, formerly called ABT-700, an antagonistic antibody directed against c-Met. For dose escalation (3+3 design), 3 to 6 patients with advanced solid tumors were enrolled into four dose cohorts (5–25 mg/kg). In the dose-expansion phase, a subset of patients was prospectively selected for MET amplification (FISH screening). Patients received telisotuzumab intravenously on day 1 every 21 days. For dose expansion, 15 mg/kg was chosen as the dose on the basis of safety, pharmacokinetics, and other data from the escalation cohorts. Forty-five patients were enrolled and received at least one dose of telisotuzumab (dose escalation, n = 15; dose expansion, n = 30). Telisotuzumab showed a linear pharmacokinetics profile; peak plasma concentration was proportional to dose level. There were no acute infusion reactions and no dose-limiting toxicities were observed. The most common treatment-related adverse events included hypoalbuminemia (n = 9, 20.0%) and fatigue (n = 5, 11.1%). By Response Evaluation Criteria In Solid Tumors (RECIST), 4 of 10 (40.0%) patients with MET-amplified tumors had confirmed partial response in target lesions (one ovarian, two gastric, and one esophageal), two (20.0%) had stable disease, three (30.0%) had progressive disease; one patient was unable to be evaluated. Among patients with nonamplified tumors (n = 35), no objective responses were observed; however, 11 patients had stable disease per RECIST criteria. In conclusion, telisotuzumab has an acceptable safety profile with clinical activity observed in patients with MET-amplified advanced solid tumors.

Designing and Evaluating Scalable Child Marriage Prevention Programs in Burkina Faso and Tanzania: A Quasi-Experiment and Costing Study

ABSTRACTBackground:A significant number of girls are married as children, which negatively impacts their health, education, and development. Given the sheer numbers of girls at risk of child marriage globally, the challenge to eliminate the practice is daunting. Programs to prevent child marriage are typically small-scale and overlook the costs and scalability of the intervention.Implementation:This study tested and costed different approaches to preventing child marriage in rural Burkina Faso and Tanzania. The approaches tested were community dialogue, provision of school supplies, provision of a livestock asset, a model including all components, and a control arm. A quasi-experimental design was employed with surveys undertaken at baseline and after 2 years of intervention. We examined the prevalence of child marriage and school attendance controlling for background characteristics and stratified by age group. Programmatic costs were collected prospectively. Results:Among those in the community dialogue arm in Burkina Faso, girls aged 15 to 17 years had two-thirds less risk (risk ratio [RR]=0.33; 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.19, 0.60) of being married and girls aged 12 to 14 years had a greater chance of being in school (RR=1.18; 95% CI=1.07,1.29) compared to the control site. In Tanzania, girls aged 12 to 14 years residing in the multicomponent arm had two-thirds less risk of being married (RR=0.33; 95% CI=0.11, 0.99), and girls 15 to 17 in the conditional asset location had half the risk (RR=0.52; 95% CI=0.30, 0.91). All the interventions tested in Tanzania were associated with increased risk of girls 12 to 14 years old being in school, and the educational promotion arm was also associated with a 30% increased risk of girls aged 15 to 17 years attending school (RR=1.3; 95% CI=1.01, 1.67). Costs per beneficiary ranged from US$9 to US$117.Conclusion:The study demonstrates that minimal, low-cost approaches can be effective in delaying child marriage and increasing school attendance. However, community dialogues need to be designed to ensure sufficient quality and intensity of messaging. Program managers should pay attention to the cost, quality, and coverage of interventions, especially considering that child marriage persists in the most hard-to-reach rural areas of many countries.

La Scala: the theater comes to you

Back in the 18th century, visitors to La Scala Theater in Milan had to scramble for good seats. Though the aristocrats owned their boxes, most people just had to stand on the ground floor the whole time, with no chairs at all.

Starting today, nobody will have to worry about getting a good seat because La Scala of Milan, one of the most iconic theaters in the world, is raising its (digital) curtain on Google Arts & Culture. You’re invited to take the best seat in the house.

By bringing its treasures online on Google Arts & Culture, La Scala is opening for a global digital audience, after closing its doors due to the current Covid-19 restrictions. Even with its stage dark, the creativity of the artists endures. To celebrate the theater’s past and present, 92 artists from five countries have come together to create La Scala’s first opera performed in quarantine. Enjoy an aria from Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra” that fittingly represents a story of unity and resilience.
At home with artists from La Scala performing Verdi’s "Simon Boccanegra"

By recording 92 artists (6 soloists, 26 choristes, 60 musicians), currently in lockdown in their homes in 5 different countries, the video (re)introduces viewers to an aria from Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra.

In La Scala’s online collection, you can now walk through the theater with Street View. Discover what it feels like to stand on the main stage like an opera star, enjoy a ballet performance from the Royal box or, even look around the industrial workshop, where  artisans create impressive stages, props and nearly 1,000 costumes every year, including creations by fashion designers Gianni Versace and Yves Saint Laurent. With high resolution imagery captured by our Art Camera you can even zoom into the finest details of the costumes—from ivory brocade and gold cabochons to black velvet and ruby mirror stones—worn by opera icon Maria Callas.

Go even further behind the scenes and explore over 259,000 images digitized from the theater’s archive. You can flip through the pages of a rare edition of the rare hand-painted edition of Turandot music score, the first libretto for Verdi’sNabucco or learn about the many different artists whose work has graced the La Scala stage, including artists David Hockney and Giorgio De Chirico.

Wherever you are, you can look behind the curtain of one of the world’s greatest theaters. And while we wait to travel again, La Scala Theatre comes to you, online on Google Arts & Culture.
