46 Receive AMS-Simons Research Enhancement Grants for PUI Faculty

Forty-six mathematical scientists have been named recipients of AMS-Simons Research Enhancement Grants for Primarily Undergraduate Institution (PUI) Faculty. Each awardee will receive $3,000 per year for three years.

The grants foster and support research collaboration by full-time mid-career mathematicians at US institutions that do not offer a mathematics doctoral degree.

This year’s grant recipients hail from 42 institutions across 21 US states. The grants will support their research in several different areas, from number theory to applied mathematics.

This is the grant program’s second cohort, said Sarah Bryant, associate vice president of programs. “Over the first two years, we’ve worked with faculty from 75 different institutions, including 19 minority-serving institutions, which shows just how much this program is expanding and making an impact,” Bryant said. She noted that “in the first year, the grants supported 87 trips, helped produce 70 publications and preprints, and gave awardees the resources needed to collaborate and advance their work.”

The grant allows for any activities that will further the awardee’s research program. Expenses include but are not limited to conference participation, institute visits, collaboration travel (awardee or collaborator), computer equipment or software, family-care expenses, and teaching assistants.

Administration of the award by the grantee’s institution is required; annual discretionary funds for a grantee’s department and administrative funds for a grantee's institution will be available at the end of each grant year.

The grants are made possible through funding from the Simons Foundation and the American Mathematical Society (AMS), as well as Eve, Kirsten, Lenore, and Ada of the Menger family.

Applications for the next cohort are anticipated to open on MathPrograms.org on January 9, 2025. Visit the AMS website to view an informational PowerPoint or sign up to receive email updates about the program. Faculty who applied for but did not receive the 2023 or 2024 awards are encouraged to reapply if they are still eligible for the grant.

Cadence Demonstrates Complete PCIe 7.0 Solution at PCI-SIG DevCon ‘24

PCI-SIG DevCon 2024 – 32nd Anniversary

For more than a decade, Cadence has been well-known in the industry for its strong commitment and support for PCIe technology. We recognize the importance of ensuring a robust PCIe ecosystem and appreciate the leadership PCI-SIG provides. To honor the 32nd anniversary of the PCI-SIG Developer’s Conference, Cadence is announcing a complete PCIe 7.0 IP solution for HPC/AI markets.

Why Are Standards Like PCIe So Important?

From the simplest building blocks like GPIOs to the most advanced high-speed interfaces, IP subsystems are the lifeblood of the chipmaking ecosystem. A key enabler for IP has been the collaboration between industry and academia in the creation of standards and protocols for interfaces. PCI-SIG drives some of the key definitions and compliance specifications and ensures the interoperability of interface IP.

HPC/AI markets continue to demand high throughput, low latency, and power efficiency. This is fueling technology advancements, ensuring the sustainability of PCIe technology for generations to come. As a close PCI-SIG member, we gain valuable early insights into the evolving specs and the latest compliance standards. PCIe 7.0 specifications and beyond will enable the market to scale, and we look forward to helping our customers build best-in-class cutting-edge SoCs using Cadence IP solutions.

Figure 1. Evolution of PCIe Data Rates (source PCI-SIG)

What’s New This Year at DevCon?

At DevCon ’24, the PCIe 7.0 standard will take center stage, and Cadence is showing off a full suite of IP subsystem solutions for PCIe 7.0 this year.

What Sets Cadence Apart?

At Cadence, we believe in building a full subsystem for our testchips with eight lanes of PHY along with a full 8-lane controller. Adding a controller to our testchip significantly increases the efficiency and granularity in characterization and stress testing and enables us to demonstrate interoperability with real-world systems. We are also able to test the entire protocol stack as an 8-lane solution that encompasses many of the applications our customers use in practice. This approach significantly reduces the risks in our customers’ SoC designs.

Figure 2: Piper - Cadence PHY IP for PCIe 7.0

Figure 3: Industry’s first IP subsystem for PCIe 7.0

Which Market Is This For?

At a time when accelerated computing has gone mainstream, PCIe links are going to take on a role of higher importance in systems. Direct GPU-to-GPU communication is crucial for scaling out complex computational tasks across multiple graphics processing units (GPUs) or accelerators within servers or computing pods. There is a growing recognition within the industry of a need for scalable, open architecture in high-performance computing. As AI and data-intensive applications evolve, the demand for such technologies will likely increase, positioning PCIe 7.0 as a critical component in the next generation of interface IP.

Here's a recent article describing a potential use case for PCIe 7.0.

Figure 4: Example use case for PCIe 7.0

Why Are Optical Links Important?

It takes multiple buildings of data centers to train AI/ML models today. These buildings are increasingly being distributed across geographies, requiring optical fiber networks that are great at handling the increased bandwidth over long distances. However, these optical modules soon hit a power wall where all the budgeted power is used to drive the signal from point A to point B, and there is not enough power left to run the actual CPUs and GPUs. Such scenarios create a need for non-retimed, linear topologies. Linear Pluggable Optics (LPO) links can significantly reduce module power consumption and latency when compared to traditional Digital Signal Processing (DSP) based retimed optical solutions, which is critical for accelerating AI performance. Swapping from DSP-based solutions to LPO results in significant cost savings that help drive down expenditure due to lower power and cooling requirements, but this requires a robust high-performance ASIC to drive the optics rather than retimers/DSP.

To showcase the robustness of Cadence IP, we have demonstrated that our subsystem testchip board for PCIe 7.0 can successfully transmit and receive 128GT/s signals through a non-retimed opto-electrical link configured in an external loopback mode with multiple orders of margin to spare.

Figure 5: Example of ASIC driving linear optics

Compliance Is Key

For PCIe 6.0, the official compliance program has not started yet; this is typical for the SIG where the official compliance follows a few years after the spec is ratified to give enough time for the ecosystem to have initial products ready, and for test and equipment vendors to get their hardware/software up and running. At this time, PCIe Gen6 implementations can only be officially certified up to PCIe 5.0 level (the highest official compliance test suite that the SIG supports). We have taken our PCIe 6.0 IP subsystem solution to the SIG for multiple process nodes, and they are all listed as compliant. You can run this query on the pcisig.com website under the Developers->Integrators list by making the following selections:

Due to space limitations, not all combinations could be tested at the May workshop (e.g., N3 root port) – this will be tested in the next workshop.

Also, the SIG just held an “FYI” compliance event this week to bring together the ecosystem for confidential testing (no results were reported, and data cannot be shared outside without violating the PCI-SIG NDA). We participated in the event with multiple systems and can report that our systems have done quite well. The test ecosystem is not mature yet, and a few more FYI workshops will be conducted before the official compliance for 6.0 is launched. We have collaborated with all the key test vendors for electrical and protocol testing throughout the year. As early as the middle of last year, we were able to provide test cards to all these vendors to demo PCIe 6.0 capabilities in their booths at various events. Many of them recorded these videos, and they can be found online.

More at the PCI-SIG Developers Conference

Check us out at the PCI-SIG Developer’s conference on June 12 and 13 to see the following demonstrations:

  • Robust performance of Cadence IP for PCIe 7.0 transmitting and receiving 128GT/s signals over non-retimed optics
  • Capabilities of Cadence IP for PCIe 7.0 measured using oscilloscope instrumentation detailing its stable electrical performance and margin
  • The reliability of Cadence IP for PCIe 6.0 interface using Test Equipment to characterize the PHY receiver quality
  • A PCI-SIG-compliant Cadence IP subsystem for PCIe 6.0 optimized for both power and performance

As a leader in PCI Express, Anish Mathew of Cadence will share his valuable insights on an important topic: “Impact of UIO ECN on PCIe Controller Design and Performance,” highlighting the strides made by the Cadence design team in achieving this implementation.

Figure 6: Cadence UIO Implementation Summary

Summary

Cadence showcased PCIe 7.0-ready IP at PCI-SIG Developers Conference 2023 and continues to lead in PCIe IP development, offering complete solutions in advanced nodes for PCIe 7.0 that will be generally available early next year. With a full suite of solutions encompassing PHYs, Controllers, Software, and Verification IP, Cadence is proud to be a member of the PCI-SIG community and is heavily invested in PCIe. Cadence was the first IP provider to bring complete subsystem solutions for PCIe 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0 with industry-leading PPA and we are proud to continue this trend with our latest IP subsystem solution for PCIe 7.0, which sets new benchmarks for power, performance, area, and time to market.

Amsterdam police detain pro-Palestinian protesters at banned demonstration

THE HAGUE, Netherlands —  Police detained several people Sunday for taking part in a demonstration in central Amsterdam that had been outlawed following violence targeting fans of an Israeli soccer club, a local broadcaster reported.  Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema banned all demonstrations over the weekend in the aftermath of the grim scenes of youths on scooters and on foot attacking Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters on Thursday and Friday in what was widely condemned as a violent outburst of antisemitism in the Dutch capital.  Israel's ambassador to the Netherlands said that 2,000 Israelis were brought home on special flights from Amsterdam over the past few days  Before the match against Ajax, Maccabi fans also tore a Palestinian flag off a building in Amsterdam and chanted anti-Arab slogans on their way to the stadium. There were also reports of Maccabi fans starting fights.  Video on local broadcaster AT5 showed police detaining one man Sunday who was taking part in a small demonstration on the central Dam Square. The protesters yelled slogans including "Free, free Palestine." AT5 reported that about 20 people were detained.  Amsterdam Municipality said on X that police had begun arresting demonstrators who refused to leave the square, which is in the heart of the city's downtown shopping area and close to the historic canal network.  Organizers of the protest went to court on Sunday morning seeking an injunction to allow the demonstration, but a judge upheld the ban imposed by the municipality.  At the hearing, senior Amsterdam police officer Olivier Dutilh said that there were again incidents overnight targeting people thought to be Jewish, including some being ordered out of taxis and others being asked to produce their passports to confirm their nationality.  Police launched a large-scale investigation Friday after gangs of youths conducted what Amsterdam's mayor called "hit and run" attacks on fans that were apparently inspired by calls on social media to target Jewish people. Five people were treated at hospitals and more than 60 suspects were arrested.  Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar rushed to the Netherlands on Friday and offered Israel's help in the police investigation. He met on Saturday with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof and said in a statement that the attacks and demands to show passports "were reminiscent of dark periods in history."

Prostate cancer patient stratification by molecular signatures in the Veterans Precision Oncology Data Commons [RESEARCH REPORT]

Veterans are at an increased risk for prostate cancer, a disease with extraordinary clinical and molecular heterogeneity, compared with the general population. However, little is known about the underlying molecular heterogeneity within the veteran population and its impact on patient management and treatment. Using clinical and targeted tumor sequencing data from the National Veterans Affairs health system, we conducted a retrospective cohort study on 45 patients with advanced prostate cancer in the Veterans Precision Oncology Data Commons (VPODC), most of whom were metastatic castration-resistant. We characterized the mutational burden in this cohort and conducted unsupervised clustering analysis to stratify patients by molecular alterations. Veterans with prostate cancer exhibited a mutational landscape broadly similar to prior studies, including KMT2A and NOTCH1 mutations associated with neuroendocrine prostate cancer phenotype, previously reported to be enriched in veterans. We also identified several potential novel mutations in PTEN, MSH6, VHL, SMO, and ABL1. Hierarchical clustering analysis revealed two subgroups containing therapeutically targetable molecular features with novel mutational signatures distinct from those reported in the Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer database. The clustering approach presented in this study can potentially be used to clinically stratify patients based on their distinct mutational profiles and identify actionable somatic mutations for precision oncology.

Only toilets will save you from the monsters in Labyrinth of Wild Abyss

From developers Cannibal Interactive, the creators of Purgatory Dungeoneer, springs forth a new labyrinth game. This one is called Labyrinth of Wild Abyss: LayeRedux and it has labyrinths. Except the labyrinths don't just have single paths to their centres, but tube monsters covered in eyes who'll stalk you slowly and methodically as you meander. Personally, it's not the vibe I'm after when I sit down in the evening and I think, "I would like to play a video game that makes me feel somewhat pleasant". But hey, it might be for you.

The Monster Hunter Wilds beta is live with an early glimpse of the new camping, wound and weather systems

Stroll on down to Uncle Capcom's garage, girls and boys, because it's time to meddle with a cat's voicebox, ride a combat peacock and meticulously injure a vast, blubbery teddybear. By which I mean, the Monster Hunter Wilds beta is now live on Steam through to 4th November at 2.59am GMT. That's 2.59am sharp. If you're hurrying along at 3am on Monday absolutely desperate to polish the aesthetics of a small enslaved catperson, you can sod off and play Dragon Age: The Veilguard instead.

Thysiastery is an anime Legend Of Grimrock, and you can attack the dinosaur merchants if you’re a complete monster

One of my lesser quality tests for an RPG is whether the shopkeepers complain at you for not buying anything. Grumpy shopkeepers, good RPG. This most specific of litmus tests has served me well, although I must admit that I’d happily upgrade it to ‘shopkeepers you can attack’, would that not disqualify 99% of games. But not turn based dungeon crawler Thysiastery, it turns out. This “dungeon crawler RPG featuring traditional roguelike and turn-based gameplay” apparently trusts you enough to let you recklessly batter its friendly wandering lizard merchants. You’d be a monster for it, of course, but it’s nice to have options.

No, you're not imagining Monster Hunter Wilds' beta combat feeling off - there's a good reason for it

I didn’t get much further in the extremely popular beta for the haute-couture-asaurus action of Monster Hunter Wilds than perfecting the exact orange-to-white ratio of my cat. Not because I wasn’t having fun, but because I immediately started looking up GPU prices after playing for ten minutes. As such, I didn’t spend enough time with the combat to get a proper feel for it. Cultural osmosis has once again allowed me to form an uneducated take, however, and I’m getting the sense there’s been some mixed reactions re: bonk quality. According to a clip shared on X by user Blue Stigma, there's a good reason for those misgivings. It's all about frames, you see.

Buggy monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds have sparked a wave of low-poly animal adoration

I've spent quite a lot of today trying to figure out why, exactly, some of the monsters in the Monster Hunter Wilds beta looked like bundles of copulating pyramids slathered in crocodile gravy. Nic clued me in on this reddit thread earlier, which cites unnamed Chinese players who've allegedly data-mined the beta's monster models, and learned that they are extremely large, encompassing hundreds of thousands of polygons.

If every monster in Monster Hunter Wilds were that fancy all of the time, your computer would become a volcano. As such, the game resorts to loading-on-demand systems to ensure that you only see those gorgeous details when the monsters are close by and, as the case may be, angrily sitting on you. When they're further afield, the flourishes fall away to free up memory and processing power. The popular Redditor explanation for the presence of monsters that look like Henry Moore sculpture is basically that the LOD systems are being forgetful, and neglecting to load the additional polygons at proximity.
