Furthering Commitment to Africa: The US-Africa Leaders Summit in Review
Invitation Only Research Event
Chatham House, London
Event participants
Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, US Department of State
Chair: Dame Rosalind Marsden, Associate Fellow, Africa Programme, Chatham House
Africa is now recognized for its vast potential as well as its political influence in international fora, and there has been a growing number of Africa-focused summits, with China, India, the European Union, South Korea and Turkey all hosting such events in recent years. The US has in the past given precedence to bilateral engagements in support of its ‘four pillars’ approach to implementing its Africa strategy. The first US-Africa Leaders’ Summit, held in August, marked a shift towards a complementary continent-wide engagement.
At this roundtable, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield will discuss US policy and priorities in Africa and the significance of the summit for enhanced US-Africa relations.
Attendance at this event is by invitation only.

Structures of substrate- and product-bound forms of a multi-domain copper nitrite reductase shed light on the role of domain tethering in protein complexes
Copper-containing nitrite reductases (CuNiRs) are found in all three kingdoms of life and play a major role in the denitrification branch of the global nitrogen cycle where nitrate is used in place of dioxygen as an electron acceptor in respiratory energy metabolism. Several C- and N-terminal redox domain tethered CuNiRs have been identified and structurally characterized during the last decade. Our understanding of the role of tethered domains in these new classes of three-domain CuNiRs, where an extra cytochrome or cupredoxin domain is tethered to the catalytic two-domain CuNiRs, has remained limited. This is further compounded by a complete lack of substrate-bound structures for these tethered CuNiRs. There is still no substrate-bound structure for any of the as-isolated wild-type tethered enzymes. Here, structures of nitrite and product-bound states from a nitrite-soaked crystal of the N-terminal cupredoxin-tethered enzyme from the Hyphomicrobium denitrificans strain 1NES1 (Hd1NES1NiR) are provided. These, together with the as-isolated structure of the same species, provide clear evidence for the role of the N-terminal peptide bearing the conserved His27 in water-mediated anchoring of the substrate at the catalytic T2Cu site. Our data indicate a more complex role of tethering than the intuitive advantage for a partner-protein electron-transfer complex by narrowing the conformational search in such a combined system.

The Americans with Disabilities Act 30th Anniversary: Furthering the Promise
2020 marks the 30th anniversary of President George H.W. Bush signing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) into law. Throughout this 30th anniversary year, the Division is publishing a monthly series of blog posts highlighting the impact that our recent ADA enforcement efforts have made in people’s everyday lives. We celebrate the many ways in which the ADA has transformed American society and enabled a generation of Americans with disabilities to thrive. At the same time, we recognize that too many barriers to equal opportunity remain. We recommit to our work of making the promise of the ADA a reality, enabling all Americans with disabilities to achieve their dreams and reach their full potential.

Gathering in the city: an annotated bibliography and review of the literature about human-plant interactions in urban ecosystems
The past decade has seen resurgence in interest in gathering wild plants and fungi in cities. In addition to gathering by individuals, dozens of groups have emerged in U.S., Canadian, and European cities to facilitate access to nontimber forest products (NTFPs), particularly fruits and nuts, in public and private spaces. Recent efforts within cities to encourage public orchards and food forests, and to incorporate more fruit and nut trees into street tree planting programs indicate a growing recognition among planners that gathering is an important urban activity.

Home sensor data gathering for neighbor notification purposes
In a computer-implemented method of generating event notifications, in-home data is received. The in-home data and environment data (e.g., weather, law enforcement, etc.) is generated by, or based on information generated by, a device located at a residence of an individual, and is analyzed to determine whether it is indicative of an event that should be reported to one or more neighboring residences and/or businesses. If the data is indicative of such an event, a notification is generated and transmitted to the relevant residences and/or businesses.
Picking row for a poultry defeathering apparatus and such an apparatus
The invention relates to a poultry defeathering apparatus and to a picking row for use in such an apparatus. The picking row comprises an elongate support part with a front side surface, a back side surface, a two interconnecting side surfaces interconnecting the front and back side surfaces. Said side surfaces extends in parallel to a length axis of the support part and a plurality of picking heads are arranged on the front side surface. At least one of the interconnecting side surfaces is convex, preferably being curved with a radius of curvature corresponding to half the height of the support part. In the apparatus, two or more picking rows are arranged side-by-side with the picking heads facing in substantially the same direction such that interconnecting side surfaces of neighboring picking rows face each other. In such a pair of interconnecting surfaces, at least one of them is convex.
Etherified melamine/formaldehyde condensates having a high solid content and low viscosity
Process for the preparation of etherified melamine/formaldehyde condensates, in which first a methylolation of melamine with a formaldehyde component in the molar ratio of from 1:6 to 1:15, preferably at a pH of >7, is carried out. This is followed by an etherification of the resulting hydroxymethylation intermediate in the presence of a C1-C20-alkyl, preferably of a C1-C6-alcohol, particularly preferably of a C1-C4-alcohol, at a pH of 9.5 being established before, during and/or after the distillation. According to the invention, a plurality of hydroxymethylation, etherification and distillation steps follow in order to achieve an etherified melamine/formaldehyde condensate which is distinguished by a high degree of hydroxymethylation, a high solids content and a low viscosity.
