What Scares You as a Small Business Owner?

Fear stops the decision-making process because fear is a decision, a decision not to take action, a decision to accept the status quo.

How to Escape the Tyranny of the To-Do List

Overwhelmed leaders cringe at multiplying demands, such as identifying and recruiting talent, envisioning the next iteration of their product, or developing their public-speaking skills. There are only 24 hours in a day, they plead.

True. But there are 168 hours in a week, 730 hours in a month, and 8,760 hours in a year. View time in that way and many of the larger-picture, often open-ended tasks that are crowded out by in-the-moment demands appear more feasible.

Scars

With bands like Scars, I'm reminded of how pop music, Top 40 and underground alike, and regardless of genre, is all about flavor-of-the-month trends. As with everything else available in our capitalist marketplace, we must create an abundance of choice and maintain a level of homogeneity while simultaneously seeking out first-, second-, and third-place winners in order to maintain focus and inertia. As the rewards for the winners are high, there's incentive to throw one's hat in the ring, despite the fact the odds of success—and sustained success—are minuscule. And you only have one shot; five years or so is the average lifespan of a band, and those that exist longer will never be cool in the most valuable way—via novelty—again.

I'm not cynical at all!

Scars' Magic 8-Ball was certainly in their court: they were part of the art-punk scene in Edinburgh, Scotland, rubbing shoulders with Postcard and Fast Product groups, and benefitting from the roads the elder acts had paved. They played with Fire Enginers, which, while definitely not a big deal these days, does linger around, through reissues and nods from dance-punk stalwarts, the Rapture and Franz Ferdinand being most prominent. And, additionally, "Your Attention Please," a track from their debut single, was included as a gold flexi in the first issue of i-D. Can't get any more hip than that.

Perhaps internal conflict led to a speedy breakup, but I'd like to think they quickly read the tea leaves and quickly figured it wasn't worth it. They existed in a funky sort of netherregion that almost feels as though it was settled on through democratic negotiation. The guitars are shiny, wet, brittle—Modern English without the handclaps and made-for-karaoke choruses. The drumming is often a spot-on impression of Siouxsie and the Banshees' Budgie or early Monochrome Set—propulsive, aggressive, precise, and yet somehow playful. And, at moments, especially with the slower tunes, they pull off a perfect Cure impression, dirgey bass chuggers that buzzsaw rhythm guitars lift.

Abundance of choice!

The Great Food Waste Scandal.

As austerity measures bite and the Condems seem to be trying to do away with the welfare state altogether and just leave us all to starve I like many others have been forced to use food banks and places that serve hot meals to those who have fallen on hard times. My local place in Ryde on the Isle Of Wight is called "The Open Arms" and takes place in the local methodist church hall (Garfield Road) once a week on a Sunday evening. The provide food for the homeless and for hungry people who are short of money for whatever reason.

I have become friends with those that organise the proceedings there and learned how they get the food they serve. Most of it is donated by local business's but so far big supermarkets have refused to donate the surplus food that they actually throw away despite it still being fit for consumption.

The Food waste facts are grim, an estimated 400,000 tonnes of food according to food cycle  could be reclaimed from retailers every year if they would just hand it over. Sadly in our experience only small local businesses with a social conscience have actually given us anything, large retailers like Tesco and Iceland refuse to give us the food they would otherwise throw away.

Right now I am roasting carrots and potatoes and making carrot and potato soup out of surplus vegetables kindly given to me by the folk at open arms that would otherwise have been thrown away. They were donated by the local farmers market I believe. There are still some left I didn't have the time to chop so I'll be making more tomorrow. It infuriates me and many others that so much food is wasted while people starve, and here are two campaigns you can join if you feel similarly angry at this and want to fight for food waste prevention.

Food Cycle collect surplus food and cook it for the disadvantaged at several hubs around the country, sadly they aren't going to open anymore hubs but check if there is one near you you could volunteer at if you are interested.

Feed The 5000 Invite you to sign a pledge to reduce your own food waste and encourage businesses to do the same. And also run a great scheme where farmers allow volunteers to go in and harvest crops that would otherwise be re-plowed into the soil as they are surplus or not cosmetically good enough to be sold in shops. This kind of eco food recycling and reclaiming is great and we are looking into doing this on the Island too.

Finished the soup and roasted veg by the way, smells lovely, and to think it would have all just been thrown away if no one claimed it!

Bush Needs a Scapegout

The daily FISK asks the question: Does Bush need a scapegoat? Or is he THE scapegoat?

FEMA boss Michael Brown isn't being fired. He's just being reallocated. Speculation is strong that this is a precursor to his removal as director, but the die-hards remain in denial.

Charles Krauthammer notes:

"The head of FEMA. Late, slow and in way over his head. On Thursday, Sept. 2, he said on national television that he didn't even know there were people in the convention center, when anybody watching television could see them there, destitute and desperate. Maybe in his vast bureaucracy he can assign three 20-year-olds to watch cable news and give him updates every hour on what in hell is going on."

"The president. Late, slow, and simply out of tune with the urgency and magnitude of the disaster. The second he heard that the levees had been breached in New Orleans, he should have canceled his schedule and addressed the country on national television to mobilize it both emotionally and physically to assist in the disaster. His flyover on the way to Washington was the worst possible symbolism. And his Friday visit was so tone-deaf and politically disastrous that he had to fly back three days later."

Athabasca oil sands

The Athabasca oil sands (also called the Athabasca tar sands or Alberta tar sands) are large deposits of bitumen or extremely heavy crude oil, located in northeastern Alberta, Canada – roughly centred on the boomtown of Fort McMurray. These oil sands, hosted primarily in the McMurray Formation, consist of a mixture of crude bitumen (a semi-solid form of crude oil), silica sand, clay minerals, and water. The Athabasca deposit is the largest known reservoir of crude bitumen in the world and the largest of three major oil sands deposits in Alberta, along with the nearby Peace River and Cold Lake deposits (the latter stretching into Saskatchewan).

Landscaping / Retaining Wall Quotes Received

We got a couple of retaining wall quotes back today and one for the paving/stormwater.

Firstly, the good news, the paving/stormwater will be around $10,200. I was expecting $10,000 for the paving alone. So this is a good thing.

Now for the bad news. I spent 30 minutes on the phone to one of the retaining wall contractors and he detailed out the problems with retaining walls in the area we are building. Most of these problems seemed to involve rock and the trouble with shifting it. If they do hit rock when putting in the walls the cost of a drilling rig to get through it is $190/hr. Ouch. Anyway the two quotes we received were:

$17,500 + allow up to $10,000 for rock drilling
$27,800 (with no allowance for rock drilling so I guess these guys are expecting it).

These quotes are $10,000 more than I was expecting when we started this whole process. Unfortunately there's absolutely nothing to be done about it as the level of the house (and thus the height and nature of the retaining walls) is determined by the local council. Of course Murphy's law prevailed and they picked the worst height for the site they could have. Oh well.
