This is a temporary phase and it will recover, do not worry. In the meantime, eat healthy and protect your body from all factors which may make you fall sick.

• New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Saturday said at least three children have died in New York from a rare condition that's being linked to the coronavirus.
• The illness, called "pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome" has symptoms similar to the Kawasaki disease and toxic-shock syndrome, including fever, rash, stomach pain, diarrhea, and vomiting.
• Children in at least six European countries have also come down with similar symptoms recently.

One in five people will have some kind of mental illness in their lifetime. Yet despite how common these conditions are — as common as silver cars, and more common than being left-handed — stigma remains the greatest barrier to individuals seeking help regarding their mental illness.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This serves as a great opportunity for our community to begin eliminating stigma by starting conversations and increasing understanding about mental illness.

Now, more than ever before, it is important to talk about mental illness. Many of us could be feeling increased anxiety, stress and feelings of isolation due to the COVID-19 outbreak and social distancing requirements. For those Iowans who already live with a mental illness, this pandemic could be causing symptoms to compound.

A recent study released by a team at Iowa State University states that increased unemployment and social isolation measures related to COVID-19 could result in an increase in suicide rates of close to 50,000 individuals.

Despite the challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic, there still is help available: Telehealth services during this crisis is critical. Our state leaders, Iowa Insurance Commissioner Doug Ommen and Gov. Kim Reynolds responded immediately by encouraging health providers, insurers and businesses to work together to remove barriers and ensure telehealth is accessible.

Your Life Iowa, a state-operated service, offers referrals for problems related to alcohol, drugs, gambling, mental health or suicidal thoughts and can be contacted by phone, text or online chat 24/7.

Between March 1 and April 19, Your Life Iowa received nearly 500 contacts related to COVID-19 and traffic on the website — YourLifeIowa.org — is up 27 percent. Crisis lines and mental health counselors around the state and country are also reporting an uptick in patients reaching out for resources or virtual counseling. This is important progress.

However, the greatest barrier for those in need of mental health services is stigma.

If you know someone who is struggling, be a voice of support. The silence around mental illness is preventing our fellow Iowans — our friends, neighbors, co-workers and family members — from feeling better. By breaking down the stigma around mental illness, we can help them access the resources and treatment they deserve.

General measures discourage all self-referrals to the emergency department. For adults, self-referral to the emergency department has been associated with nonsevere disease, whereas severity of illness of self-referred children is still unknown.

Postpartum vitamin A supplementation is a strategy to combat vitamin A deficiency and seems to reduce maternal/infant morbidity and mortality. However, controversies exist regarding which dose has a greater efficacy, 200 000 IU (WHO protocol) or 400 000 IU (IVACG protocol).

In this study, postpartum maternal supplementation with 400 000 IU of vitamin A did not provide any additional beneficial effect in reducing infant morbidity compared with the standard dose of 200 000 IU. (Read the full article)

Vitamin D is a pleiotropic hormone important for proper functioning of multiple organs. Adult critical care studies have suggested vitamin D as a modifiable risk factor. No studies have investigated the prevalence, risk factors, or role in pediatric critical illness.

This study provides evidence that the majority of critically ill children have vitamin D deficiency at the time of PICU admission, and that lower levels are associated with hypocalcemia, catecholamine administration, significant fluid bolus requirements, and longer PICU admissions. Heuristics are decision-making aids or shortcuts that ease the task of making a wide variety of decisions in diverse contexts. Little is known about the heuristics that parents of children with serious illness use when confronting difficult decisions.

Parents of children with life-threatening illnesses use several different types of heuristics, explicitly, in making sense of complex situations, making decisions, and communicating these decisions to others. Better understanding of these heuristics may improve communication and decision support. (Read the full article)

Children with chronic illnesses are at risk for emotional and behavioral problems. Therefore, interventions that focus on coping with the negative consequences of the disease are needed. Evidence-based interventions are limited and often focus on a single diagnosis group.

This study demonstrates the efficacy of a cognitive-behavioral group intervention for children with various chronic illnesses. The findings indicate that the involvement of parents is important to achieve long-term results. (Read the full article)

Children with chronic illnesses tend to be sicker during infections than previously healthy children but are triaged in the same way, even though the validity of triage systems has not yet been evaluated in these chronically sick children.

The performance of the Manchester Triage System was lower for children with a chronic illness than for previously healthy children. Children with cardiovascular illnesses, respiratory illnesses, gastrointestinal illnesses, or other congenital or genetic defects were especially at risk of being undertriaged. Although fertility rates among adolescents have declined in recent years, certain groups of adolescent girls remain at risk. Whereas adolescents with major mental illness have many risk factors for teenage pregnancy, their fertility rates have not been yet to be examined.

Fertility rates among adolescent girls with major mental illness are almost 3 times higher than among unaffected adolescents and are not decreasing to the same extent. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction allows sensitive detection of respiratory viruses. The clinical significance of detection of specific viruses is not fully understood, however, and several viruses have been detected in the respiratory tract of asymptomatic children.

Our results indicate that quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction is limited at distinguishing acute infection from detection in asymptomatic children for rhinovirus, bocavirus, adenovirus, enterovirus, and coronavirus. (Read the full article)

Severe complications, such as respiratory failure, have been described in influenza infection. Clinicians are commonly faced with influenza-like illnesses (ILI), which is the initial nonspecific presentation of many respiratory viruses; the risk of severe complications from ILI are unknown.

Severe complications occurred in children initially presenting with ILI, irrespective of the virus identified. Risk factors for severe complications did not differ by demographics or respiratory virus, although children with high-risk conditions are at greater risk of severe complications.
