Picosecond pump–probe X-ray scattering at the Elettra SAXS beamline

A new setup for picosecond pump–probe X-ray scattering at the Austrian SAXS beamline at Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste is presented. A high-power/high-repetion-rate laser has been installed on-site, delivering UV/VIS/IR femto­second-pulses in-sync with the storage ring. Data acquisition is achieved by gating a multi-panel detector, capable of discriminating the single X-ray pulse in the dark-gap of the Elettra hybrid filling mode. Specific aspects of laser- and detection-synchronization, on-line beam steering as well protocols for spatial and temporal overlap of laser and X-ray beam are also described. The capabilities of the setup are demonstrated by studying transient heat-transfer in an In/Al/GaAs superlattice structure and results are confirmed by theoretical calculations.

The crystal structure of title salt, C22H46N42+·2NO3−·2H2O, has been determined using synchrotron radiation at 220 K. The structure determination reveals that protonation has occurred at diagonally opposite amine N atoms. The asymmetric unit contains half a centrosymmetric dication, one nitrate anion and one water mol­ecule. The mol­ecular dication, C22H46N42+, together with the nitrate anion and hydrate water mol­ecule are involved in an extensive range of hydrogen bonds. The mol­ecule is stabilized, as is the conformation of the dication, by forming inter­molecular N—H⋯O, O—H⋯O, together with intra­molecular N—H⋯N hydrogen bonds.

The title compound, [Fe(C44H24N8Cl4)(CN)2][K2(C18H36N2O6)2]·2C4H8O was synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction as well as FTIR and UV–vis spectroscopy. The central FeII ion is coordinated by four pyrrole N atoms of the porphyrin core and two C atoms of the cyano groups in a slightly distorted octa­hedral coordination environment. The complex mol­ecule crystallizes with two tetra­hydro­furan solvent mol­ecules, one of which was refined as disordered over two sets of sites with refined occupancies of 0.619 (5) and 0.381 (5). It has a distorted porphyrin core with mean absolute core-atom displacements Ca, Cb, Cm and Cav of 0.32 (3), 0.22 (3), 0.56 (2) and 0.37 (14) Å, respectively. The axial Fe—Ccyano bond lengths are 1.991 (2) and 1.988 (2) Å. The average Fe—Np (Np is a porphyrin N atom) bond length is 1.964 (10) Å. One of the O atoms and several C atoms of the 222 moiety [222 = 4,7,13,16,21,24-hexa­oxa-1,10-di­aza­bicyclo­[8.8.8]hexa­cosa­ne] were refined as disordered over two sets of sites with occupancy ratios of 0.739 (6):0.261 (6) and 0.832 (4):0.168 (4). Additional solvent mol­ecules were found to be highly disordered and their contribution to the scattering was removed using the SQUEEZE procedure in PLATON [Spek (2015). Acta Cryst. C71, 9–18], which indicated a solvent cavity of volume 372 Å3 containing approximately 83 electrons. These solvent mol­ecules are not considered in the given chemical formula and other crystal data.

First synthesis of a unique icosahedral phase from the Khatyrka meteorite by shock-recovery experiment

Icosahedral quasicrystals (i-phases) in the Al–Cu–Fe system are of great interest because of their perfect quasicrystalline structure and natural occurrences in the Khatyrka meteorite. The natural quasicrystal of composition Al62Cu31Fe7, referred to as i-phase II, is unique because it deviates significantly from the stability field of i-phase and has not been synthesized in a laboratory setting to date. Synthetic i-phases formed in shock-recovery experiments present a novel strategy for exploring the stability of new quasicrystal compositions and prove the impact origin of natural quasicrystals. In this study, an Al–Cu–W graded density impactor (GDI, originally manufactured as a ramp-generating impactor but here used as a target) disk was shocked to sample a full range of Al/Cu starting ratios in an Fe-bearing 304 stainless-steel target chamber. In a strongly deformed region of the recovered sample, reactions between the GDI and the steel produced an assemblage of co-existing Al61.5Cu30.3Fe6.8Cr1.4 i-phase II + stolperite (β, AlCu) + khatyrkite (θ, Al2Cu), an exact match to the natural i-phase II assemblage in the meteorite. In a second experiment, the continuous interface between the GDI and steel formed another more Fe-rich quinary i-phase (Al68.6Fe14.5Cu11.2Cr4Ni1.8), together with stolperite and hollisterite (λ, Al13Fe4), which is the expected assemblage at phase equilibrium. This study is the first laboratory reproduction of i-phase II with its natural assemblage. It suggests that the field of thermodynamically stable icosahedrite (Al63Cu24Fe13) could separate into two disconnected fields under shock pressure above 20 GPa, leading to the co-existence of Fe-rich and Fe-poor i-phases like the case in Khatyrka. In light of this, shock-recovery experiments do indeed offer an efficient method of constraining the impact conditions recorded by quasicrystal-bearing meteorite, and exploring formation conditions and mechanisms leading to quasicrystals.

A decagonal quasicrystal with rhombic and hexagonal tiles decorated with icosahedral structural units

The structure of a decagonal quasicrystal in the Zn58Mg40Y2 (at.%) alloy was studied using electron diffraction and atomic resolution Z-contrast imaging techniques. This stable Frank–Kasper Zn–Mg–Y decagonal quasicrystal has an atomic structure which can be modeled with a rhombic/hexagonal tiling decorated with icosahedral units at each vertex. No perfect decagonal clusters were observed in the Zn–Mg–Y decagonal quasicrystal, which differs from the Zn–Mg–Dy decagonal crystal with the same space group P10/mmm. Y atoms occupy the center of `dented decagon' motifs consisting of three fat rhombic and two flattened hexagonal tiles. About 75% of fat rhombic tiles are arranged in groups of five forming star motifs, while the others connect with each other in a `zigzag' configuration. This decagonal quasicrystal has a composition of Zn68.3Mg29.1Y2.6 (at.%) with a valence electron concentration (e/a) of about 2.03, which is in accord with the Hume–Rothery criterion for the formation of the Zn-based quasicrystal phase (e/a = 2.0–2.15).

X-ray structure of the direct electron transfer-type FAD glucose dehydrogenase catalytic subunit complexed with a hitchhiker protein

The bacterial flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD)-dependent glucose dehydrogenase complex derived from Burkholderia cepacia (BcGDH) is a representative molecule of direct electron transfer-type FAD-dependent dehydrogenase complexes. In this study, the X-ray structure of BcGDHγα, the catalytic subunit (α-subunit) of BcGDH complexed with a hitchhiker protein (γ-subunit), was determined. The most prominent feature of this enzyme is the presence of the 3Fe–4S cluster, which is located at the surface of the catalytic subunit and functions in intramolecular and intermolecular electron transfer from FAD to the electron-transfer subunit. The structure of the complex revealed that these two molecules are connected through disulfide bonds and hydrophobic interactions, and that the formation of disulfide bonds is required to stabilize the catalytic subunit. The structure of the complex revealed the putative position of the electron-transfer subunit. A comparison of the structures of BcGDHγα and membrane-bound fumarate reductases suggested that the whole BcGDH complex, which also includes the membrane-bound β-subunit containing three heme c moieties, may form a similar overall structure to fumarate reductases, thus accomplishing effective electron transfer.

High-viscosity sample-injection device for serial femtosecond crystallography at atmospheric pressure

A sample-injection device has been developed at SPring-8 Angstrom Compact Free-Electron Laser (SACLA) for serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX) at atmospheric pressure. Microcrystals embedded in a highly viscous carrier are stably delivered from a capillary nozzle with the aid of a coaxial gas flow and a suction device. The cartridge-type sample reservoir is easily replaceable and facilitates sample reloading or exchange. The reservoir is positioned in a cooling jacket with a temperature-regulated water flow, which is useful to prevent drastic changes in the sample temperature during data collection. This work demonstrates that the injector successfully worked in SFX of the human A2A adenosine receptor complexed with an antagonist, ZM241385, in lipidic cubic phase and for hen egg-white lysozyme microcrystals in a grease carrier. The injection device has also been applied to many kinds of proteins, not only for static structural analyses but also for dynamics studies using pump–probe techniques.
