21-Year Old WWII Soldier's Sketchbooks Are Visual Diary of War

21-Year Old WWII Soldier's Sketchbooks Reveal a Visual Diary of His Experiences

A visual diary with 158 pencil sketches brings to life the wartime experience of noted architect Victor A. Lundy, who served in the U.S. 26th Infantry Division during World War II. In 1942, Lundy was 19, studying to be an architect in New York City. Excited about rebuilding Europe post-war, he and other college men enlisted in the Army Special Training Program (ASTP). But, by 1944, with D-Day planned, the Army needed reinforcements, and Lundy and his company were thrown into the infantry. Lundy couldn't believe it and recalled during an oral history interview that during lectures, he "never listened, I was busy sketching." But soon, "I sort of took to it. ... war experience just hypnotizes young men." Lundy, who is now 92, recalls his inability to listen during lectures. “I was busy sketching,” he admits. During his time in the infantry, he continued to sketch in his pocket-sized notebooks. The drawings, which were created between May and November 1944—when Lundy was wounded—take us from his initial training in Fort Jackson to the front lines in France. The vivid images show everything from air raids to craps games for cigarettes. A sense of longing for home is a recurring theme in his sketches, which include detailed drawings of his bunk as well as particularly dream-like drawing, titled Home Sweet Home, that shows a soldier lounging on a hammock. Lundy, who went on to have an acclaimed architecture career, donated his eight sketchbooks to the Library of Congress in 2009. The sketchbooks have all been digitally archived and are now available for viewing online. Lundy’s gift is a precious one, as in this age of continued war and terror it is more important than ever to learn from our past history.

How to Assign Custom Keyboard Shortcuts to Menu Bar Commands in macOS

In this episode, Tyler demonstrates how to assign your own keyboard shortcuts to menu bar commands that lack default shortcuts in macOS.

An example of where this may be useful is in System Settings, where many settings can be quickly accessed from the View menu, however none of these commands have default keyboard shortcuts mapped to them. To create your own shortcut for a command:

  1. Open the app that contains the command, and note exactly how it's displayed in the menu bar; you'll need to enter this later.
  2. Open System Settings > Keyboard, and click Keyboard shortcuts.
  3. Select "Application shortcuts" in the table, and click Add.
  4. Choose the app the shortcut will apply to from the "Application" popup menu. note that you cannot map a shortcut that's already in use by that app.
  5. Type the exact name of the command in the "Menu title" field. To enter an ellipsis (…) sign as part of the command, press Option-Colon.
  6. In the "Shortcut" field, type the shortcut you want to assign to that command, and click Done to dismiss the dialog.
  7. If the app containing the command you assigned a shortcut to is open, quit and reopen it for the change to take effect.

You're listening to an AppleViz Podcast.

Hello and welcome.

My name is Thomas Domville, also known as AnonyMouse.

Now, I've done a podcast before on Apple Watch and being able to identify and find your iPhone with the ping my iPhone from your Apple Watch.

So like myself, I tend to put my phone in places I don't remember where I left it.

Are you one of those people?

Raise your hand.

Yep.

There's a few out there.

And what that feature does is that it takes, I can go to my Apple Watch, go to the control center and use the ping my iPhone, double tap that, and then it'll start chiming and you can find your phone in no time by following the chime within the house or place that you left your iPhone.

What if I told you, you can do the other way around?

Yes.

So this was very useful for me as I was on vacation shortly ago.

And one of the things I came in, I was just hot.

I was just hot and the Apple Watch was just making me hotter, right?

You got to get that watch off.

And so I put it down and Lord, behold, I forget where I left the Apple Watch.

Then I remembered, Hey, there's a feature that I can do the other way around.

And that's using my iPhone to ping my watch.

So I'm going to show you how to set that up and how this works.

And so you can find your Apple Watch as you could with your iPhone, with your Apple Watch.

So it's great both ways.

So we are going to go to your iPhone and we are going to go to the settings, because that is where we are going to have to turn this feature on.

And that lives in the control center of settings.

So let's go double tap settings, settings.

Now swipe to the right until you get to control center button, control center button.

Once you find that one finger, double tap, swipe down from the top right edge to open control center.

Now the easiest way to get to where we need to go is to set your order to headings.

And let's go to the first headings here, included controls heading.

These are the included controls.

So these are controls that shows up on your control center as of right now.

So here's a few of the controls I have set.

Remove timer, reorder timer button, direct remove code scanner, reorder code scanner, remove voice…
