How A Cancelled Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale Changed The Bloodstock Industry’s Playing Field

Fasig-Tipton's decision to consolidate its 2020 select yearling sales into a single Kentucky auction and forego trade in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., due to the COVID-19 pandemic is historic, but it's not wholly unprecedented. In fact, this summer's re-shuffled auction schedule connects the circle for one of the bloodstock industry's most seismic flashpoints. The Fasig-Tipton yearling […]

Antonio Petrucelli’s Maps (Edes Harrison & Artzybasheff)

Intercellar - Accidental Anomalies of Particle Wallpapers

Intercellar - Accidental Anomalies of Particle Wallpapers

AoiroStudioMay 07, 2020

Intercellar is a series of free wallpapers designed 'by accident' by Crtomir Just. I mentioned 'accident' because 'the images are the results of errors in particle simulations'. I think they are super stunning and crispy. We took the liberty to share Crtomir's entire collection and their 'download links'. You can download the 8K wallpapers, this feature is a reminder of what we used to do back in the days. We are definitely living in different times but it's always a nice reminder to remember what we were made of.

These images are the results of errors in particle simulations. While accidentally trying to scrub through the timeline, the otherwise predictable simulation explodes and is forced to take strange turns by blindly filling the gap between missing frames.

About Crtomir Just

Crtomir is an art director and 3D artist based in Murska Sobota, Slovenia, his work slightly shifted and it’s plain awesome. Make sure to follow his work on Behance and store.

Hardware Implementation of Neural Self-Interference Cancellation. (arXiv:2001.04543v2 [eess.SP] UPDATED)

In-band full-duplex systems can transmit and receive information simultaneously on the same frequency band. However, due to the strong self-interference caused by the transmitter to its own receiver, the use of non-linear digital self-interference cancellation is essential. In this work, we describe a hardware architecture for a neural network-based non-linear self-interference (SI) canceller and we compare it with our own hardware implementation of a conventional polynomial based SI canceller. In particular, we present implementation results for a shallow and a deep neural network SI canceller as well as for a polynomial SI canceller. Our results show that the deep neural network canceller achieves a hardware efficiency of up to $312.8$ Msamples/s/mm$^2$ and an energy efficiency of up to $0.9$ nJ/sample, which is $2.1 imes$ and $2 imes$ better than the polynomial SI canceller, respectively. These results show that NN-based methods applied to communications are not only useful from a performance perspective, but can also be a very effective means to reduce the implementation complexity.

Soft Interference Cancellation for Random Coding in Massive Gaussian Multiple-Access. (arXiv:2005.03364v1 [cs.IT])

We utilize recent results on the exact block error probability of Gaussian random codes in additive white Gaussian noise to analyze Gaussian random coding for massive multiple-access at finite message length. Soft iterative interference cancellation is found to closely approach the performance bounds recently found in [1]. The existence of two fundamentally different regimes in the trade-off between power and bandwidth efficiency reported in [2] is related to much older results in [3] on power optimization by linear programming. Furthermore, we tighten the achievability bounds of [1] in the low power regime and show that orthogonal constellations are very close to the theoretical limits for message lengths around 100 and above.

Optimal Location of Cellular Base Station via Convex Optimization. (arXiv:2005.03099v1 [cs.IT])

An optimal base station (BS) location depends on the traffic (user) distribution, propagation pathloss and many system parameters, which renders its analytical study difficult so that numerical algorithms are widely used instead. In this paper, the problem is studied analytically. First, it is formulated as a convex optimization problem to minimize the total BS transmit power subject to quality-of-service (QoS) constraints, which also account for fairness among users. Due to its convex nature, Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions are used to characterize a globally-optimum location as a convex combination of user locations, where convex weights depend on user parameters, pathloss exponent and overall geometry of the problem. Based on this characterization, a number of closed-form solutions are obtained. In particular, the optimum BS location is the mean of user locations in the case of free-space propagation and identical user parameters. If the user set is symmetric (as defined in the paper), the optimal BS location is independent of pathloss exponent, which is not the case in general. The analytical results show the impact of propagation conditions as well as system and user parameters on optimal BS location and can be used to develop design guidelines.

Near infrared fluorogen and fluorescent activating proteins for in vivo imaging and live-cell biosensing

Tissue slices and whole organisms offer substantial challenges to fluorescence imaging. Autofluorescence and absorption via intrinsic chromophores, such as flavins, melanin, and hemoglobins, confound and degrade output from all fluorescent tags. An “optical window,” farther red than most autofluorescence sources and in a region of low hemoglobin and water absorbance, lies between 650 and 900 nm. This valley of relative optical clarity is an attractive target for fluorescence-based studies within tissues, intact organs, and living organisms. Novel fluorescent tags were developed herein, based upon a genetically targeted fluorogen activating protein and cognate fluorogenic dye that yields emission with a peak at 733 nm exclusively when complexed as a “fluoromodule”. This tool improves substantially over previously described far-red/NIR fluorescent proteins in terms of brightness, wavelength, and flexibility by leveraging the flexibility of synthetic chemistry to produce novel chromophores.
