The Center for Humanities at Tufts (CHAT) invites the Tufts community to join us on November 14 for a poetry reading with Daisy Atterbury and Adrienne Raphael, moderated by Professor Sarah Akant.

Daisy Atterbury is a poet, essayist and scholar. Daisy’s most recent book, The Kármán Line (2024), investigates queer life and fantasies of space and place with an interest in unraveling colonial narratives in the American Southwest.

Adrienne Raphel is the author of Thinking Inside the Box: Adventures with Crosswords and the Puzzling People Who Can't Live Without Them and the poetry collections Our Dark Academia and What Was It For. She teaches writing at CUNY Baruch and lives in Brooklyn.

Predicting the future of the economy is always a dicey proposition. That is especially true after more than three years of pandemic-related economic weirdness. No one quite knows what will happen next.

Will the Fed be able to pull off a soft landing and bring down inflation without causing either a recession or a big jump in unemployment? Or will we end up with a hard landing, in which inflation comes down, but at the price of the country's economic health? Or, a third possibility, will the Fed not successfully bring inflation down at all?

On today's show, three economic experts explain what they look for when trying to make predictions about what might come next for the U.S. economy. And how those indicators lead them to very different conclusions. We will also consult a tarot card reader...to see if her reading of the future can help us know which outcome is the most likely.

Philosophers have historically played a foundational role in musicology, from theorizing the origins of music to its potential for political liberation. In this reading group, we aim to closely read the central philosophical texts on music to understand their arguments and why they have remained prominent among musicologists and cultural theories.

Selected students from fall creative writing courses read from their work in fiction, poetry, screenwriting and literary translation as part of the Althea Ward Clark W’21 Reading Series, presented by the Program in Creative Writing. Open to public.

Pandemic academic recovery in both reading and math is lagging notably behind pre-COVID achievement trends for students in grades 4-8 during the 2022-23 school year, according to a new report by NWEA analyzing MAP Growth test scores of 6.7 million students across 20,000 public schools. Third-graders were the only group who saw improvements, and they were slight, according to NWEA, an educational research organization recently acquired by learning technology company HMH.
