Among infants delivered at 37 to 44 weeks, blacks and Hispanics had significantly higher neonatal and postneonatal mortality attributable to birth defects than whites. Among middle-aged adults, genotype scores predict incident type 2 diabetes but do not improve prediction models based on clinical risk factors including family history and BMI. These clinical factors are more dynamic in adolescence, however.

Racial disparities in health care have been reported in multiple settings, but not thoroughly examined at the clinician level. The frequent occurrence of respiratory tract infections allows the evaluation of differences in the management of children seen by the same clinician.

Racial differences in the management of common pediatric infections occur among children treated by the same clinician. Given persistent concerns about nonjudicious antibiotic use, examining racial differences may inform our understanding of prescribing practices and identify opportunities for intervention. Asthma morbidity disproportionately affects racial minorities and disadvantaged children. Differences in socioeconomic status and genetics have been offered as explanations but an in-depth understanding of differences in hardships may better explain disparities and also help to identify intervention targets.

Among children admitted for asthma, African Americans were twice as likely to be readmitted as whites. Nearly half the disparity was explained by socioeconomic status and hardships. Although expert consensus and previous literature document the importance of early feeding and activity behaviors and practices in preventing obesity and the risks of early rapid weight gain, few studies have rigorously assessed obesity-related behaviors by caregivers of infants.

This study demonstrates the high prevalence of behaviors thought to increase risk for obesity in a diverse, large sample of parent/2-month-old dyads and finds that many behaviors vary by race and ethnicity, suggesting the potential for culturally tailored interventions. (Read the full article)

Previous studies have demonstrated racial and ethnic differences in glycemic control even after adjustment for variables such as insulin dosage, diabetes duration, and socioeconomic status. It is controversial whether genetic, physiologic, cultural, socioeconomic, and/or provider-related factors underlie these disparities.

Previous studies have shown racial differences in invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) rates. Recent studies demonstrated a national decline in IPD rates after 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) introduction. The impact of PCV13 on racial and regional differences in IPD rates among Tennessee children is unknown.

After introduction of PCV13, pediatric IPD rates, including disease due to antibiotic-resistant strains, declined substantially. Racial and regional differences in IPD rates were no longer significant. Our study illustrates the impact of PCV13 and the importance of continued IPD surveillance. (Read the full article)

Though race and ethnicity are strongly associated with LLA risk, with higher risk seen in African Americans (AA), American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN), and Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders (NH/PI), associations between foot self-inspection and racial and ethnic groups are inconsistent.
