Crystal structure of nickel orthovanadate (Ni3V2O8) at 299 (3) K and 1323 (8) K: an X-ray diffraction study

The structure of Ni3V2O8 was studied using X-ray diffraction at temperatures of 299 and 1323 K. No phase transition at high temperature is observed. The variation in V—O bond length is small as compared with the Ni—O bond due to its high rigidity.

Crystal structure of nickel orthovanadate (Ni3V2O8) at 299 (3) K and 1323 (8) K: an X-ray diffraction study

Nickel orthovanadate is a promising material with potential applications in energy storage and photocatalytic devices. The crystal structure of Ni3V2O8 at 299 (3) K and 1323 (8) K was studied using X-ray powder diffraction. The sample was a single-phase orthorhombic kagome-staircase-Ni3(VO4)2-type structure (space group Cmca) at both temperatures. The phase purity and morphology was studied using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The refined unit-cell parameters at 299 (3) K are a = 5.93384 (4) Å, b = 11.38318 (7) Å and c = 8.23818 (5) Å, and at 1323 (8) K are a = 6.02077 (7) Å, b = 11.48838 (7) Å and c = 8.32611 (9) Å. The obtained results indicate thermal expansion anisotropy, with a largest expansivity along a. Variations in Ni—O and V—O bonds with temperature are observed. The variation in the Ni—O bond is about one order higher in magnitude than that of the V—O bond, signifying the high rigidity of V—O bonds. The unit-cell size variations with rising effective ionic volume of the divalent A ion in the A3B2O8 family [A = Ni, Mg, Zn, Co, Mn (experimental data) and also A = Cu, Cd (theoretical data), B = V or As] are analyzed. Based on experimental and theoretical data, trends within the family are observed and the unit-cell size for reported solid solution of nickel (87%) and copper (13%) mixture in (Ni1–xCux)3V2O8 are predicted. Predictions are also provided for some hypothetical A3B2O8 ternary compound and solid solutions.

Crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of a halogen bond between 2-(allylthio)pyridine and 1,2,4,5-tetrafluoro-3,6-diiodobenzene

The crystal structure of the title 2:1 molecular complex between 2-(allylthio)pyridine and 1,2,4,5-tetrafluoro-3,6-diiodobenzene, C6F4I2·2C8H9NS, at 100 K has been determined in the monoclinic space group P21/c. The most noteworthy characteristic of the complex is the halogen bond between iodine and the pyridine ring with a short N⋯I contact [2.8628 (12) Å]. The Hirshfeld surface analysis shows that the hydrogen⋯hydrogen contacts dominate the crystal packing with a contribution of 32.1%.

Crystal structure of (1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadecane-κ6O)potassium-μ-oxalato-triphenylstannate(IV), the first reported 18-crown-6-stabilized potassium salt of triphenyloxalatostannate

The title complex, (1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadecane-1κ6O)(μ-oxalato-1κ2O1,O2:2κ2O1',O2')triphenyl-2κ3C-potassium(I)tin(IV), [KSn(C6H5)3(C2O4)(C12H24O6)] or K[18-Crown-6][(C6H5)3SnO4C2], was synthesized. The complex consists of a potassium cation coordinated to the six oxygen atoms of a crown ether molecule and the two oxygen atoms of the oxalatotriphenylstannate anion. It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system within the space group P21. The tin atom is coordinated by one chelating oxalate ligand and three phenyl groups, forming a cis-trigonal–bipyramidal geometry around the tin atom. The cations and anions form ion pairs, linked through carbonyl coordination to the potassium atoms. The crystal structure features C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds between the oxygen atoms of the oxalate group and the hydrogen atoms of the phenyl groups, resulting in an infinite chain structure extending along a-axis direction. The primary inter-chain interactions are van der Waals forces.

We asked 188 economists. And the survey says...

(For our story on this year's Nobel in Economics, check out our daily show, The Indicator!)

Let's face it. Economics is filled with terms that don't always make sense to the average person. Terms that sometimes mean what you think they mean, but sometimes not at all. Not even close.

We surveyed 188 economists. And we asked them: What are the most misunderstood terms in the field of economics?

On today's show, their answers! Hear stories about near recessions, a problem with insurance, econ at your local movie theater, and... an economics term that will make undergrads blush. Strap in, and bring your popcorn!

This episode was hosted by Amanda Aronczyk and Alexi Horowitz-Ghazi. It was produced by Sam Yellowhorse Kesler with help from Sean Saldana. It was edited by Jess Jiang, engineered by Valentina Rodríguez Sánchez and fact-checked by Sierra Juarez. Alex Goldmark is our executive producer.

USDCAD moves lower after testing ceiling area between 1.3945 and 1.3958

The USDCAD has backed backs off from ceiling area again. That area comes between 1.3945 and 1.3958.

The subsequent move to the downside has the pair heading toward 200 and 100-hour MA support targets at 1.39054 and 1.3898 respectively (green and blue lines on the chart below). A move below that level would target the rising 100 bar moving average on the 4-hour chart at 1.38784. Last week the price fell below that moving average line on two separate occasions only to fail and bounce back to the upside.

If the price were to get above the ceiling area, the 2022 high price comes in at 1.3977. Get above that and the price is trading at the highest level since 2020.

USDCAD Summary

The USDCAD is trending upward, approaching a key swing area between 1.3945-1.39581.

Key Levels:

Resistance

  • 1.3945 to 1.3958. Swing highs over the last 7 trading days (from swing highs from Oct 31, Nov 1, 6, and 7.

  • 1.3977 (2022 high)

Support

  • 1.3905 - 200-hour MA)

  • 1.3898 Rising 100-hour MA

Outlook:

  • Break above 1.3977 targets highest level since 2020.

  • Move below 1.3905 and rising 100-hour MA favors sellers.

  • Otherwise, buyers maintain control, pushing for new highs.
