Slog AM: Election Day Is Tomorrow, Hope for Harris in Iowa, Washington GOP's Racist Campaign Texts

The Stranger's morning news round-up. by Nathalie Graham

Welcome to hell week: Somehow, it's here. The 2024 election is tomorrow. If you haven't mailed yours in yet, do it today. Better yet, drop your ballot in a ballot box. Please do not drop any incendiary devices in ballot boxes. Tell your friends to vote. Tell your enemies to vote. Vote like your life depends on it. Vote like someone else's life depends on it. Then, take a nap or something.

Scene setting: Wind and weather are turbulent today. Everything is astir.

⚠️The next storm system will move into western WA Monday into Tuesday, bringing gusty winds, lowland rain, mountain snow, & high surf to the region. Details are highlighted below!

— NWS Seattle (@NWSSeattle) November 3, 2024

To make everything worse: The sun is dead. It isn't coming back until spring. Say goodbye to long days. Go to an antique store and buy a lamp. I went to the Antique Mall of West Seattle this weekend and bought myself one. It's saving me. We all deserve soft, buttery warm light this winter.

Starting tonight, the sun will set in the 4 pm hour every night until Jan. 25.

Seattle area vampires, rejoice! ????

Iowaaaaat? Cross your fingers and hold your breath for this next part. The poll by respected pollster and possible soothsayer Ann Selzer commissioned by the Des Moines Register/Mediacom shows Vice President Kamala Harris leading Donald Trump 47% to 44% in Iowa. The state has voted staunchly red and resolutely for Trump. Back in June, Trump led President Joe Biden (before he decided he should lay down and take a nap instead of running for re-election) by 18 points. Even as recently as September, Trump led Harris in Iowa by 4 points. Apparently, the tables are turning and women are the ones doing the spinning. Particularly, older and independent women voters. Abortion is soooo on the ballot and Iowan women are not taking their futures lightly. If this poll is right, Harris wouldn't just win Iowa, she'd win it in a landslide.

Trump says "actually, no:" Famous fact-lover Donald Trump says the Iowa poll is wrong and we are all mistaken. According to Trump, the truly accurate poll is the one from Emerson College that shows him up 53% to Harris' 43%.

Someone who will not get to see if the Iowa poll is accurate: Music legend Quincy Jones died on Sunday. He was 91.

Don't look a gift poll in the mouth: The knock-on-wood-worthy polling isn't just for national politics. In local news, a Northwest Progressive Institute poll found that in the Seattle City Council Position 8 race, Alexis Mercedes Rink leads incumbent Tanya Woo 52% to 28%. Remember how U2 slipped its album "Songs of Innocence" into everyone's iTunes libraries back in 2014? That's basically how it feels having the council-selected Woo, who knows nothing about anything, in a position of power. Seems as though Seattle is rejecting Woo the same way everyone rejected "Songs of Innocence"—moving her straight to the trash where we hopefully will never have to listen to her again.

Not worried about the election? Must be nice. But, also maybe you should be. Gov. Jay Inslee clearly is. He signed a letter activating the National Guard in the event of civil unrest after the election.

Apparently, after removing Peanut, the DEC then euthanized him to "test for rabies." The squirrel who often donned tiny cowboy hats will only do so now from heaven. Rest easy, Peanut

Roaming police: City officials mysteriously placed Tacoma's police chief on a brief administrative leave back in September. Now, we know why. Chief Avery Moore was gabbing too much while on vacation. Moore racked up a $1,082 bill on his city-issued cellphone while he was in Sweden. Most of the charges appear to be international usage charges, but I like to imagine Moore couldn't stop gossiping on the phone while touring fjords.

Work stoppage for NYT tech guild: The "over 600 software engineers, product managers, data analysts, and designers" keeping the New York Times website up and running went on strike at 12:01 this morning, in the latest attempt to win a union contract with the media company. The work stoppage comes at a pivotal time for the NYT; Election Day coverage on the ~newspaper of record~ requires a lot of tech. Maybe this squeeze will give these workers the contract they're asking for. In the meantime, don't cross the digital picket line. No Wordle. No Connections. Just solidarity.

WA GOP's sexist, racist, anti-LGBTQ text campaign: In Washington's 14th legislative district, the texts are getting out of hand. The Spanish texts spread lies about Latina Democratic candidates, saying they "support chemical castration of children at school," they want to "eliminate the Spanish language," and they "hate your family, they hate God, and they hate the truth." Washington GOP chair Jim Walsh confirmed the organization footed the bill for these texts. The Democrats are pissed and believe these texts are defamatory and broke campaign finance laws. They'll be taking legal action.

The Washington State GOP is sending out these texts in an increasingly Latino state senate district (14), per a source who sent these along.

How to Assign Custom Keyboard Shortcuts to Menu Bar Commands in macOS

In this episode, Tyler demonstrates how to assign your own keyboard shortcuts to menu bar commands that lack default shortcuts in macOS.

An example of where this may be useful is in System Settings, where many settings can be quickly accessed from the View menu, however none of these commands have default keyboard shortcuts mapped to them. To create your own shortcut for a command:

  1. Open the app that contains the command, and note exactly how it's displayed in the menu bar; you'll need to enter this later.
  2. Open System Settings > Keyboard, and click Keyboard shortcuts.
  3. Select "Application shortcuts" in the table, and click Add.
  4. Choose the app the shortcut will apply to from the "Application" popup menu. note that you cannot map a shortcut that's already in use by that app.
  5. Type the exact name of the command in the "Menu title" field. To enter an ellipsis (…) sign as part of the command, press Option-Colon.
  6. In the "Shortcut" field, type the shortcut you want to assign to that command, and click Done to dismiss the dialog.
  7. If the app containing the command you assigned a shortcut to is open, quit and reopen it for the change to take effect.

A Demonstration and Walkthrough of VoiceOver Command Customization on macOS

In this episode, Tyler demonstrates some of VoiceOver's command customization capabilities on macOS.

If you find a particular VoiceOver command difficult to perform, or discover a function in the Commands menu that doesn’t have a default command, you can assign your own custom command to it. In addition, you can configure commands to open apps and run scripts, so you don’t have to locate them manually.

Commands can be configured by going to VoiceOver Utility > Commands, selecting the “Command set: user” radio button, and clicking “Custom commands edit.” For ease of navigation, you can choose the type of commands you want to view or change, such as numpad, trackpad, keyboard, etc from the "Filter commands" popup menu, or use the search field to locate a particular command.

In this dialog, commands can be presented in either column view, which organizes commands into categories like general, information, and navigation, or table view, which displays a list of all VoiceOver commands, including user-configured ones, which you can navigate with the up and down arrow keys. To add a command, in column view, locate the command, interact with the table of assignments, and specify your new one using the "Add input" popup menu. To add a command when in table view, click the Add button, interact with the table, and specify the input assignment from the popup menu labeled "None: edited." Then, press VO-Right-Arrow passed an empty cell to another popup menu, and choose the command you want your new input assignment to perform.

Tyler here.

With a demonstration and walkthrough of VoiceOver command customization on macOS.

Prior to macOS Sequoia, VoiceOver included several user configurable sets of commands, known as commanders, for the numpad, trackpad, keyboard, and quick nav.

With macOS Sequoia, these commanders have been consolidated into VoiceOver's broader command set, meaning in addition to the existing modifiers that you could use, like the option key for keyboard commander, you can also create your own command assignments using the VoiceOver modifier, which may be useful if you find a particular VoiceOver command difficult to perform, if you find a command in the commands menu, for example, that lacks a default assignment, or if you want to create a custom command to open an application.

So to demonstrate this, I'm going to open VoiceOver utility on my mac with VoF8.

How to Customize the Lock Screen on iOS

In this episode, Tyler demonstrates how to customize the lock screen on iOS, specifically how to remove the flashlight and camera buttons and replace them with other controls.

In addition to viewing the time, date, and notifications, the Lock Screen can be customized to remove or replace the camera and flashlight buttons with other controls, or show certain types of information at a glance, such as upcoming calendar events or current weather conditions. To customize the Lock Screen, perform a one-finger triple-tap on either the time or date, double-tap Customize, and then double-tap “Customize Lock Screen wallpaper.” From here, you can double-tap the Remove buttons for default controls, the “add quick action” button to select alternative controls, or the “Add widget” button to select a widget.

Hey, Apple Vissers, Tyler here with a quick tip for how to customize the lock screen on iOS.

By default, the iOS lock screen includes the time, date, any notifications received since the device was last used, and at least on devices without a home button, shortcuts to the flashlight and camera functions.

Over the years, the iOS lock screen has gradually become more customizable, with the ability to add widgets introduced with iOS 16 in 2022, and the ability to remove the camera and flashlight functions or replace them with other controls the user might find more useful introduced with iOS 18 in 2024.

If, like me, you don't find the camera or flashlight functions particularly useful, or at least not useful enough to where you would want them to be among the first things you see when you wake your iPhone, you can replace them with other things you might find more useful.

So for me, I replace them with a shortcut to the alarm and also a single action shortcut that I created to set a 20-minute timer.

So when I'm about to work out, I just take out my phone, wake it, unlock it, and double tap the workout timer button on the lock screen.

And when I want to set an alarm, I don't have to go into Control Center or open the clock app or use Siri anymore.

I just double tap the alarm button on the lock screen and I'm taken right there.

So to demonstrate this, I'm going to wake my iPhone now and I'm just going to explain so I don't have to explain while voiceover is talking and compete with that sound.

Once I unlock it, I'm going to triple tap either the time or the date.

Either one works.

You can triple tap or you can double tap and hold either one.

So I'm going to wake my iPhone now.

Do not disturb Friday 1 a.m. Okay, triple tap.

Astronomy wallpaper weather sunrise and sunset widget and clock next alarm widget button and illustration of red, blue and yellow rectangle.

Okay, so if I swipe left astronomy, that's the first element on the screen.

It's the current wallpaper I have.

You can have multiple.

So if you want to have different lock screens, like, for example, if you're working, you might want access to different types of information than if you're just on your own time.

If you want to link focuses, you can do that.

So if you have a work focus, you can have it…

Maps app with custom route selection

Is there a maps app that will give me time/traffic estimates on the route of MY choice? So for example, I ask Google Maps to navigate me back home and they give me time & traffic for a couple different options. But in many cases there's another route that I want to take for my own reasons that's not being presented, and I want to see how it's doing traffic-wise. I would like to be able to input the street/bridge/whatever I want to take and get a route based on that. Does such a thing exist? I'm on iOS (current).

I know I can add a stop along the route to force it to go the way I want in the worst case scenario but this isn't always possible or practical. I would like to find out if there's an app that has this functionality built in.

Waze doesn't do this either.

Downsides to post-meno hysterectomy?

Routine pap with my NP shows 'wow, big cervical polyp!' so then off to the gyno who says 'let's just pull it all out!' Is this a normal go-to solution for a healthy 55yo? YANMD. Have you done this? What do you know? Seeking feedback and related experience around polyps and fibroids and hysterectomies. All my life I have been among the fortunate to have regular and painless periods. It's now been a solid 3 years since my last. My recent pap showed an apparently giant cervical polyp, so off to the (new-to-me) gyn I went (to have it removed I thought). She tells me it's very large and that my uterus is also, which apparently indicates to her that it's full of fibroids. I am healthy and have no symptoms of anything.

She assures me there's nothing to worry about (I lost my person to cancer so yes, this does scare me, because I know 'nothing to worry about' can also mean you'll be dead in a year) and says if I was her sister, she would recommend 'removing it all.'

Apparently a hysterectomy is laparoscopic, and all the parts come out your vag and ...it's no big thang? (she had one herself and was 'back to work 3 days later'). Next is me making an appt for a pelvic ultrasound, followed by another appt with her in early Feb to establish what we do next. Any thoughts? And sure, maybe it's not cancer, but if they noticed a polyp 6 weeks ago and my post-ultrasound appointment to talk about next steps isn't for another 6 weeks, and procedure maybe isn't for yet another 6 weeks, I mean... what if it is cancer and I'm giving it all this time to grow? Also, is a decision like this something that merits a second opinion? I live in a small town with two gynos, and at least 2 hours from more.

Just trying to wrap my head around this (recognizing that I have some health anxiety due to my loss) and learn if it's a totally standard approach. If you have something to share but don't want to do it here, feel free to PM.

The Customer Is Always Right. Except When They Won't Wear A Mask

They fume and rage and demand their rights. Sometimes they even get violent. In the age of COVID-19, most people practice social distancing guidelines when they go into stores and restaurants, putting on masks and standing 6 feet behind other customers. Still, there are the nightmare customers — those who refuse to comply. "I've had a lot of conflict. I've had a lot of pushback from people," says Brenda Leek, owner of Curbside Eatery in La Mesa, Calif. One woman entered Leek's restaurant without a mask, pulling her T-shirt over her face. Leek told her to mask up or leave. "So then she's like, 'This is ridiculous! You're discriminating against me!' Told me I would be hearing from her attorney. And I said, 'That's fine,' " Leek says. Encounters like that are anything but unusual. The Internet is filled with videotaped confrontations involving customers who flout social distancing rules. Sometimes they insist on entering without face coverings. Other times one customer stands too close to
