I play in the Chicago Industrial Chess League (CICL) for my employer DRW. I generally play one of the lower boards, but I do pretty well. Two nights ago, I played possibly the best chess game of my life... and lost.

How? By touching the wrong piece. I had a choice of two recaptures - one that would win the game, and one that would lose. If I had simply moved quickly, that would've been bad enough, but I actually noted the problem with the first recapture, and then did some sanity checks for the other move. Content that all was good, I started my move by picking up the bishop to be captured, AND THEN PICKED UP THE WRONG CAPTURING PIECE. I realized it immediately, but by then it was too late. I resigned a few moves later.

The worst bit is I found a strong move on 18. (see below, I'm playing white) - and I saw that position 3 moves earlier. I don't always play this well when I'm rested - let alone after a 12 hour work day... which of course just makes the blunder that much more painful.

Moral of the story? When you're winning, when you're tired (or both!). STOP! Check it again. Check each bit, write it down and check it a third time. Then if your sure, make the move.

This one burned. Hopefully it stung enough that I won't do it again.

As promised, quotations from Wittgenstein’s Philosophical Investigations are now available. Again, both German and English versions of each are reproduced, though the task was made considerably easier than in other cases by the fact that the edition I used was a dual-language edition.

I (like, I suspect, many others) find Wittgenstein simultaneously fascinating and annoying. On the one hand, he makes interesting and insightful observations on all sorts of phenomena; on the other, he never really synthesizes those observations into a single, coherent argument. For example, when he says that “Uttering a word is like striking a note on the keyboard of the imagination” (I§6) or that “Philosophy is a battle against the bewitchment of our intelligence by means of our language” (I§109) or that “The fluctuation of scientific definitions: what to-day counts as an observed concomitant of a phenomenon will to-morrow be used to define it” (I§79) I find myself saying “Right on!”; but I also find myself frustrated by the fact that he can’t even decide on what, exactly, his purpose in writing this all down is. For example, at one point Wittgenstein claims that his “aim in philosophy” is “To shew the fly the way out of the fly-bottle” (I§309), while elsewhere he says: “My aim is: to teach you to pass from a piece of disguised nonsense to something that is patent nonsense” (I§464) and still elsewhere he suggests that he’s merely making obvious remarks that presumably everybody already knows:

What we are supplying are really remarks on the natural history of human beings; we are not contributing curiosities, however, but observations which no one has doubted, but which have escaped remark only because they are always before our eyes. (I§415)

As I say, this can be frustrating, but, in a way, is also understandable. In one sense, Wittgenstein isn’t trying to provide answers, but rather to show that there aren’t really any problems (as he says in Philosophical Grammar: “While thinking philosophically we see problems in places where there are none. It is for philosophy to show that there are no problems.”). And why aren’t there any problems? Because “philosophical problems arise when language goes on holiday” (I§38); our problems derive from an inability to properly express ourselves.

(INTERPOLATION: This isn’t stated very well, so I want to expand just a bit. The idea, as I understand it, is that we ask too much of language; that is, we ignore the fact that “Explanations come to an end somewhere” (I§1), that, as quoted below, “language itself cannot be explained”, but, rather, that it can only be understood by its use. In failing to recognize this, we find ourselves unable to express the explanations we seek.)

Within this context, I think Wittgenstein’s thesis (to the extent that he even has one) boils down to the following:

What we have rather to do is to accept the everyday language-game, and to note false accounts of the matter as false. The primitive language-game which children are taught needs no justification; attempts at justification need to be rejected. (II.xi)

Or, from a different direction:

“So you are saying that human agreement decides what is true and what is false?”—It is what human beings say that is true and false; and they agree in the language they use. That is not agreement in opinions but in form of life. (I§241)

Viewed from this perspective, then, it is, perhaps, not so surprising that Wittgenstein has a tendency to be frustratingly vague at times; after all, as he himself says, “What is most difficult here is to put this indefiniteness, correctly and unfalsified, into words” (II.xi). Personally, I find his perspective compelling, but I can understand why some might find it rather superficial, especially since it can lead to seemingly-trivial statements like: “One wants to say: a significant sentence is one which one can not merely say, but also think” (I§511).

All this aside, though, there are two other things I really like about Wittgenstein. First, the fact that he has a real sense of humor and isn’t afraid to deploy it. For example, I couldn’t help laughing aloud at reading this:

Think of a picture of a landscape, an imaginary landscape with a house in it.—Someone asks “Whose house is that?”—The answer, by the way, might be “It belongs to the farmer who is sitting on the bench in front of it”. But then he cannot for example enter his house. (I§398)

Of course, it probably helps that his sense of humor has that bone-dry, literalistic bent that is characteristic of mathematicians (if you don’t see the humor in the above, re-read the last two sentences like a died-in-the-wool literalist). Which brings me to the second appeal Wittgenstein has for me: he has at least some understanding and awareness of mathematics. And, of course, I can’t help but be excited when someone seems to agree with my own quasi-Intuitionist perspective:

Of course, in one sense mathematics is a branch of knowledge,—but still it is also an activity. And ‘false moves’ can only exist as the exception. For if what we now call by that name became the rule, the game in which they were false moves would have been abrogated. (II.xi)

And, though it doesn’t explicitly refer to mathematics, Wittgenstein’s initial (or final, depending on how you look at it) conclusion has a distinctly mathematical feel to it (especially within the context of Russell’s paradox):

What is spoken can only be explained in language, and so in this sense language itself cannot be explained.

Language must speak for itself.

I can never get enough of old musical and comedy variety shows these days. I remember them being rather cheesy from what I can remember of their original airings, but they are yet another thing that gets better with age. Postano: 12.11.2024. 11:59 (GMT 1) Dana 11. studenog 2024., točno u 11 sati i 11 minuta, u Svečanoj dvorani Akademije za umjetnost i kulturu u Osijeku potpisan je sporazum o suradnji između Akademije i Hrvatske komore dentalne medicine. Sporazum su uime institucija potpisali dekanica Akademije, akademkinja Helena Sablić Tomić, i dr. sc. Hrvoje Pezo, predsjednik Komore.

Sporazum označava početak suradnje između jedinstvene umjetničko-znanstvene institucije u zemlji i strukovne organizacije koja predstavlja dentalnu medicinu u Hrvatskoj. Cilj je sporazuma objediniti znanje i resurse kako bi se postigli viši standardi u razumijevanju i unaprjeđenju zajedničkih područja djelovanja koji se protežu kroz edukaciju, zdravstvo, kulturu i interdisciplinarne projekte koji se razvijaju na specijalističkom studiju Kreativnih terapija pri Akademiji za umjetnost i kulturu u Osijeku.

„Ovim partnerstvom želimo otvoriti nove mogućnosti suradnje u području obrazovanja i profesionalnog razvoja te omogućiti razmjenu iskustava između umjetničko-znanstvene zajednice i medicinske struke“, istaknula je akademkinja Helena Sablić Tomić. „Akademija i Komora mogu se zajedničkim naporima baviti istraživanjem novih pristupa u edukaciji kao i poticanjem šireg društvenog dijaloga o važnosti holističkog pristupa zdravlju.“

Predsjednik Komore dr. sc. Hrvoje Pezo naglasio je da sporazum predstavlja jedinstvenu priliku za razvoj novih standarda u edukaciji o zdravstvenoj kulturi i prevenciji. „Spoj umjetničkog i znanstvenog pristupa, uz medicinsku ekspertizu, omogućuje nam da dublje sagledamo utjecaj koji zdravlje ima na svakodnevni život, ali i na kulturu i društvenu dinamiku. Vjerujemo da će se kroz ovu suradnju razvijati inovativni pristupi obrazovanju i informiranju javnosti,“ izjavio je dr. Pezo.

Kazne za one koji ne poštuju propise su dosta visoke.

Učinite svoju okolinu sigurnom, brinite za svoje susjede posebno starije životne dobi, kao i kućne ljubimce, kojima detonacije petardi nisu nimalo ugodne.

Postano: 13.11.2024. 8:06 (GMT 1) Rukometni klub Baranja u suradnji s Udrugom BIT organizirao je drugi XIXO kup, turnir u mini rukometu, u sklopu obilježavanja Dana Grada Belog Manastira.

Na sportskom terenu Nastavno-sportske dvorane u Belom Manastiru, snage su odmjerile najmlađe rukometne ekipe, uzrasta od 9 do 10 godina s područja Osječko-baranjske, Vukovarsko-srijemske, Brodsko-posavske i Požeško-slavonske županije. Sudjelovalo je 12 klubova s 20 prijavljenih ekipa. Ukupno oko 200 djece.

"Turnir nema natjecateljski karakter, a cilj mu je da djeca razviju ljubav prema rukometu, i sportu općenito. Izuzetno je važno da djeca nauče i usvoje pravila rukometa, a najvažnije da postanu timski igrači i dio ekipe jer, rukomet je timski sport", objašnjava cilj i smisao XIXO kupa, turnira u mini rukometu Dalibor Dodoš, dopredsjednik Rukometnog kluba Baranja iz Belog Manastira.

Postano: 13.11.2024. 9:31 (GMT 1) Sezona je grijanja i osječki dimnjačari imaju pune ruke posla. Mnogi se građani zbog različitih razloga "vraćaju" grijanju na kruta goriva, no najčešći je razlog poskupljenje energenata. Problem predstavljaju dimnjaci koji ne zadovoljavaju europske uvjete.

Stanje s dimnjacima u Hrvatskoj daleko je od idealnog. No, postoje vidovi i tehnička rješenja koja su izvediva i koja bi pružila sigurnost građanima. Naime, riječ je o dimovnim objektima koji se nisu obnavljali, a nalaze se na zgradama građenim 60-tih, 70-tih ili 80-tih godina prošlog stoljeća, pojasnio je dimnjačar Denis Balažić.

- Plin je i dalje dobar kao energent, samo treba uskladiti tip dimnjaka sa samim energentom. Što se tiče trovanja i požara, imam višegodišnje iskustvo. Neka su iskustva su loša, no uvijek ima i pozitivnih priča. U svakom slučaju - opreza nikad dosta, poručio je Balažić.

Postano: 13.11.2024. 10:15 (GMT 1) Reprezentativci iz redova Nogometnog kluba Osijek opet su u akciji. U A selekciju Bosne i Hercegovine ponovno je pozvan Nail Omerović koji je nedavno debitirao protiv Mađarske u Ligi nacija. Sada je ostao u konkurenciji za predstojeće dvoboje u istome natjecanju, protiv Njemačke (16. studenoga) u Freiburgu i Nizozemske tri dana kasnije u Zenici. Sergej Barbarez ga također vidi na poziciji desnog bočnog, na kojoj najčešće igra i u redovima Bijelo-plavih. Arnel Jakupović ostao je i nadalje na širem popisu reprezentativaca Austrije za utakmice protiv Kazahstana i Slovenije. „Na oku“ je, dakle, izborniku Ralfu Rangnicku koji prati njegove igre za NK Osijek, što mu je zasigurno motiv više da se kod nas pokaže u najboljem izdanju.

Mlada reprezentacija u play-offu s Gruzijcima
Ovaj puta imamo trojicu igrača koji su dobili pozive za U-21 selekciju Hrvatske. To su Nikola Čavlina, Marko Soldo i Ivan Cvijanović, za koje možemo reći da su standardni u ovoj selekciji, dok su na pretpozivu ostali Domagoj Bukvić i Šimun Mikolčić. Izabranike Ivice Olića očekuju dva izlučna susreta play-offa na kraju kvalifikacija za Europsko prvenstvo i to protiv Gruzije. Prvo će se igrati 15. studenoga u Tbilisiju, a 19.11. uzvrat je na riječkoj Rujevici. Niko Farkaš i Filip Živković iznova su uvršteni u reprezentaciju U-19 koja svoje kvalifikacije za plasman na kontinentalnu smotru nastavlja turnirom u Karlovcu. Od 13. do 19. studenoga Hrvatska će redom igrati protiv Armenije, Bjelorusije i Srbije. Imamo i dvojicu U-18 reprezentativaca. To su Fran Peček i Ivan Barić, također naši juniori koji putuju u Rijeku na prijateljski turnir gdje će naša nacionalna vrsta za protivnike imati vršnjake iz Portugala, Republike Irske i Japana. I za kraj, Matej Grahovac i Dražen Jaman uvršteni su u selekciju U-17 za dvije kontrolne utakmice s Ukrajinom, također u Rijeci.

Postano: 13.11.2024. 11:05 (GMT 1) U rumunjskom gradu Campulung Moldovenescu održano je prvenstvo Balkana u krosu.

Konkurencija je bila vrlo jaka, a u sastavu hrvatske reprezentacije našao se i član AK Slavonija-Žito Lovro Nedeljković. U utrci seniora na 10.000 metara naš je dugoprugaš zauzeo vrlo dobro, osmo mjesto s rezultatom 31:59,33.

Zlato je osvojio Albanac David Nikolli s vremenom 30:24,61, srebro je zaslužio Turčin Ayetullah Aslanhan (30:32,31), dok je bronca pripala Ukrajincu Ihoru Porozovu (30:44,86).

Nedeljković je, inače, ostvario najbolji plasman od hrvatskih reprezentativaca koji su nastupili u ovoj konkurenciji.

Postano: 13.11.2024. 11:49 (GMT 1) U petak 15. studenoga 2024. počinje isplata nacionalne naknade za starije osobe za listopad 2024. korisnicima računa otvorenih u poslovnim bankama.

Nacionalnu naknadu za starije osobe dobit će 17 388 korisnika (80,23 % žena i 19,77 % muškaraca), za što je osigurano 2.591.205,00 eura iz Državnog proračuna.

U skladu sa Zakonom o izmjenama i dopunama Zakona o nacionalnoj naknadi za starije osobe (NN 156/23), nacionalna naknada od 1. siječnja 2024. iznosi 150,00 eura, izvijestili su iz HZMO-a.

Postano: 13.11.2024. 12:15 (GMT 1) Državni inspektorat Republike Hrvatske izvijestio je o opozivu proizvoda Kotanyi Himalajska sol, 88g, L426651, rok trajanja 24.03.2029., L429757, najbolje upotrijebiti do 19.06.2029., L418800 najbolje upotrijebiti do 11.11.2028. zbog utvrđenih čestica plastike nastalih prilikom mljevenja soli.

Proizvod nije u skladu s Uredbom 178/2002 o utvrđivanju općih načela i uvjeta zakona o hrani, osnivanju Europske agencije za sigurnost hrane te utvrđivanju postupaka u područjima sigurnosti hrane.

Postano: 13.11.2024. 13:51 (GMT 1) Od 1. studenog vozači moraju imati upaljena dnevna ili kratka svjetla, a od 15. studenog moraju imati i zimske gume.

U petak, 15. studenog stupa na snagu zimski režim na cestama, što znači da limeni ljubimci moraju imati i zimsku opremu.

Uređeno je to novom Odlukom o obveznoj zimskoj opremi. U zimske dionice javnih cesta ulazi 839,2 km autocesta i 1.863,3 km državnih i županijskih cesta te 68,1 km državnih cesta za tranzitni promet iz trajektnih luka Vukovar, Osijek, odnosno luke i rafinerije Sisak.

Vozači su u zimskim uvjetima prije uključivanja u promet dužni očistiti snijeg i led s vozila. Ako vas u prometu 'uhvate' bez zimske opreme kaznit će vas sa 132,72 eura.
