This seminar is part of the Animal Matters Seminar Series presented by Tufts Center for Animals and Public Policy.

Housing insecurity for tenants has increased in severity in the last several years as rents have skyrocketed and eviction rates have, in many cities, climbed higher than even pre-pandemic levels, according to a 2024 Harvard study. Today, more renters than ever are experiencing at least moderate rent burden as unaffordability in the rental market hit an all-time high in 2022.  Housing insecurity directly impacts peoples' ability to acquire and keep pets for life. There is a small, but growing body of research to better understand the impact of rental housing conditions on pets, pet owners, and animal shelters in the U.S. and how this issue relates to broader affordable housing and tenants’ rights social justice advocacy.

This presentation will share the results of three research projects, co-authored by our guest speaker Lauren Loney, a licensed attorney, researcher, and advocate crafting policies and lobbying on a variety of issues at local, state, and federal levels. Her talk will address the impact of restrictive pet policies in rental housing on pets, animal shelters, and the tenants who love them. Join us to learn about trends in pet relinquishment due to housing issues and several programmatic tools that may be most useful to mitigate the flow of these pets into animal shelters.

With the ever-increasing quality of third-party tools lowering the barriers for enthusiasts to provide Web-based services for their teams and departments, what's the point in having an insitutional Web development team? Can they provide anything that someone with the time, motivation and a decent tool can't? Should Web Services just be innovating on top of these services (and if so, how?), or should they be disbanded in favour of outsourcing? A short introductory presentation will be followed by a roundtable discussion with sweets on offer to keep our energy up! The session was facilitated by Phil Wilson and Tom Natt, University of Bath.

Andrew Cormack, Richard Dunning and Andy Powell, Eduserv will investigate the relationships between institutional single sign-on, Athens, Shibboleth, the UK Access Management Federation and more recent developments like OpenID and CardSpace and will give participants an opportunity to ask questions of a panel of experts from the community.

Peter Scott is the Head of the Centre for New Media in the Knowledge Media Institute of the Open University. CNM protypes the application of new technologies and media to learning at all levels. Peter's current research interests range widely across knowledge and media research. Three key threads at the moment are: telepresence; streaming media systems; and agent research. He has a BA (1983) and PhD (1987) in Psychology. Before joining the Open University in 1995, Dr Scott lectured in Psychology and Cognitive Science at the University of Sheffield. He has a textbook in each of these subjects. He has managed dozens of major grants, and has a bucketful of research publications. Dr Scott is on the board of the company Corous.Com, a wholly owned subsidiary of Open University World Wide Ltd., specializing in the development of corporate education and training portals. He has acted as an Internet consultant to a range of multinational corporations. He is also the managing director of WebSymposia Ltd, an Internet multimedia webcasting company.

Peter Flynn runs the academic project support service in the Computer Centre at University College Cork and was Ireland's first Webmaster. He trained at the London College of Printing and has an MA from Central London Poly. Peter was on the design team for HTML and XML and currently edits the XML FAQ. He holds the dubious distinction of being the first person to break a link on the Web.

This year we are inviting IWMW 2007 participants to submit lightweight examples of innovative uses of Web technologies which may be of interest to IWMW 2007 participants. This could include mashups, use of multimedia, use of 3-D virtual environments or seamless access to content using technologies such as OpenID. [2007-05-24]

The Web is changing. It is no longer a phenomenon but has integrated itself within our culture. However for those creating Web services times are far from stable. A wide range of Web-based applications continue to be developed, such as blogs, wikis, podcasting, social networking software, RSS feeds etc. The Semantic Web is still on the cards and now we have Web 2.0, an opportunity for a more sharing, more participative Web? Is it just hype? Will these progressions make any difference to the way in which we go about our work? What does Web 2.0 mean to the Institutional Web? This panel session offered three different perspectives on the potential of Web 2.0 within learning activities - the library perspective, the commercial perspective and the HE/FE perspective.

Randy Metcalfe, OSS Watch and Brian Kelly, UKOLN gave a plenary on openess and the Web manager. Openness appears to be all the rage: open standards for interoperability, open source for software development and deployment, and open content for sharing knowledge. What brings these phenomena together is a commitment to openness. But how do colleges and universities engage with openness? And more particularly, what does it mean for institutional Web managers.
