Judge Denies Britney Spears' Request To Have Her Father Removed From Conservatorship

Anastasia Tsioulcas | NPR

A Los Angeles Superior Court judge signed an order Wednesday denying Britney Spears' request to have her father, Jamie Spears, removed from the financial aspects of her conservatorship.

Judge Brenda Penny denied the request, which was first filed by Spears' attorney, Samuel D. Ingham III, last November. The judge's decision comes after the singer appeared in court last Wednesday to make a direct appeal to the court. In that emotional statement, Spears said that she was being exploited and "bullied" by the conservatorship — and specifically, by her father.

Until recently, both the financial and personal arms of the conservatorship were controlled by Spears' father, Jamie Spears.

Last year, Ingham stated in a filing that Spears "strongly opposed" her father as conservator, and that she refused to perform if he remained in charge of her career.

In February, Judge Penny allowed a wealth-management company, Bessemer Trust, to come in as a co-conservator for the financial arm of Spears' arrangement. Jamie Spears remains the main conservator for all other aspects of Spears' conservatorship.

The next hearing in the case is currently scheduled for July 14. It is possible that Spears will submit a petition for the conservatorship to be terminated. In her comments to Judge Penny last week, Spears said that she had been unaware that she could take such an action. "I didn't know I could petition the conservatorship to end it," she said. "I'm sorry for my ignorance, but I honestly didn't know that."

How to make a minimal HTTPS request with ncat --ssl with explicit HTTP content?

Posted by Ciro Santilli OurBigBook via dev on Sep 17

Hello, I was trying for fun to make an HTTPS request with explicit hand-written HTTP content.

Something analogous to:

printf 'GET / HTTP/1.1 Host: example.com ' | ncat example.com 80

but for HTTPS. After Googling one of the tools that I found that seemed it might do the job was ncat from the nmap
project, so I tried:

printf 'GET / HTTP/1.1 Host: example.com ' | ncat --ssl example.com 443

an that works...

NAB Statement on Requests for FCC Investigations of Broadcast Stations for Journalism Content

“Local broadcasters carry the mantel of investigative journalism, shining a light on government corruption, questioning those in power and ensuring consumers have a powerful voice to fight back against injustice. It is concerning that some public officials – typically those whose actions have been called into question – would ask the federal government to step in and censor broadcasters in violation of the First Amendment. The Federal Communications Commission must reject such unconstitutional attacks on free speech. It is a slippery slope, and one that our nation’s founders clearly sought to prevent.”

Disabling In-App Review Requests on iOS

Tired of apps interrupting you with requests to rate and review? This episode with Thomas Domville will show you how to take control.

This iOS feature lets app developers ask you to rate and review their apps directly within the app. While helpful for developers, these pop-ups can be a nuisance , especially if they appear frequently.

How to Disable In-App Ratings & Reviews:

Find the Native Settings app and Double Tap to Open Settings
Now Swipe Right until you find the AppStore button and Double Tap to open
Locate by swiping right until you get to the "In-App Ratings & Reviews" and toggle the switch to the off position (

Remember: Disabling this feature only stops the in-app prompts. You can still search for apps in the App Store and leave ratings and reviews manually if you'd like to share your feedback.

Hello and welcome.

My name is Thomas Donville also known as AnonyMouse.

Hey have you been in this position where like myself I keep opening up different apps and it just seems like one form or another is always popping up hey would you like to review this app and give the app some rating and you know I do this every so often and when I'm in a good mood or whatever not or if I feel like the app really deserved to have a rating I want to go ahead and give that rating but the thing I don't like is that it just keeps coming up every so often so I feel like that there needs to be a balance and I need to and I will vote and give you a rating when I am ready to do that so if you are one of those people you see these little pop-ups and it seems like it's popping up everywhere have no fear there is a nice little settings that we can just simply turn on and off to disable this pop-up so let me to show you where that's at and we're gonna head right over to settings settings double tap to open and let's do that one finger don't tap to open up settings settings and now we are going to to go to the right and she get to App Store App Store button yep it's way down there but once we find it go ahead and do one finger double tap on this allow App Store to access heading now you're gonna keep swiping to the right until you find a button for in app rating and review in app ratings and reviews switch button on double tap to toggle setting all we got to do is one finger double tap just to turn this off off and voila now you have this set off now of course when this is set off you'll never get that pop-up again however now in saying that and I want to make this pretty clear is that I know the developers out there are probably screaming at me for suggesting anything like this to you because I get it because what they want they want you to rate it as often as you can because that gives them more visibility and that leads to more downloads and more sales to them so I get that but I believe in a fair balance that I am able to do a few votes but I don't want to be pester all the time so that is the option why I can turn that on and off and keep in mind there's a lot of apps out there if you just go into the apps that you like and then go into into settings or about area they typically have a little…

Cherokee Nation Requests that Jeep Discontinue Use of "Cherokee" Name

Chuck Hoskin, Jr., the principal chief of the Cherokee nation has asked carmaker Jeep to change the name of its Grand Cherokee vehicle stating that Jeep's use of the name without the tribe's permission is troubling and perpetuates international misinformation of the Cherokee people.  According to Hoskin "The use of Cherokee names and imagery for peddling products doesn't deepen the country's understanding of what it means to be Cherokee, and I think it diminishes it somewhat."  As might be expected for those that have followed American Indian cultural appropriation throughout the last several decades, the carmaker is resisting such a move claiming that the name "honors" the tribe.

Stellantis, the automobile conglomerate that owns Jeep, formed recently from the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot, defended its use of the Cherokee name claiming "our vehicle names have been carefully chosen and nurtured over the years to honor and celebrate Native American people for their nobility, prowess and pride."  This argument echoes the same arguments used for decades by Daniel Snyder, the owner of the Washington Football Team (formerly the Redskins) and the owners of the Cleveland Indians (who have also recently agreed to change the team name after phasing out the offensive Chief Wahoo logo a few years ago).  For Stellantis, the Grand Cherokee is one of Jeep's most popular models selling more than 200,000 units in 2020.

Suzan Shown Harjo, long an activist fighting against cultural misappropriation and offensive use of American Indian imagery, is not buying the "honor" argument.  "Of course it's not an honor" states Harjo, "That’s the assumption that was made by so many people about our land, water, gold, silver, copper — name a mineral. Now it’s about our imagery, our names and our cultural icons . . . When does this thievery stop?"

The Cherokee Nation describes itself as a sovereign tribal government. "Upon settling in Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) after the Indian Removal Act, the Cherokee people established a new government in what is now the city of Tahlequah, Oklahoma. A constitution was adopted on September 6, 1839, 68 years prior to Oklahoma’s statehood.  Today, the Cherokee Nation is the largest tribe in the United States with more than 380,000 tribal citizens worldwide. More than 141,000 Cherokee Nation citizens reside within the tribe’s reservation boundaries in northeastern Oklahoma. . . . The Cherokee Nation is committed to protecting our inherent sovereignty, preserving and promoting Cherokee culture, language and values, and improving the quality of life for the next seven generations of Cherokee Nation citizens."

Whether Jeep drops the moniker will likely depend on whether the same kind of financial pressure is brought against Jeep and Stellantis similar to what was brought to bear on Daniel Snyder and the Washington Football Team and corporate entities like Aunt Jemima, Land-O-Lakes and Uncle Ben's.  Each of these entities have been persuaded to change/drop racist depictions and monikers because of the economic pressure of threatened boycotts and sponsorship withdrawals, particularly in light of the 2020 summer of protests following the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
