Socialized Medicine Director Dies Waiting for Operation

It’s a bit like a supermarket manager dying of starvation or a bottled-water distributor dying of thirst: In the U.K., a former National Health Service (NHS) director died while waiting for medical care — at her own hospital. The Daily Mail reports:

Margaret Hutchon, a former mayor, had been waiting since last June for a follow-up stomach operation at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, Essex.

But her appointments to go under the knife were cancelled four times and she barely regained consciousness after finally having surgery.

Her devastated husband, Jim, is now demanding answers from Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust — the organisation where his wife had served as a non-executive member of the board of directors.

He said: "I don't really know why she died. I did not get a reason from the hospital. We all want to know for closure. She got weaker and weaker as she waited and operations were put off."

Not to be cruel, but the reason is simple.

It’s called government-run health care.

Early Smartphone Use in Children? Two Studies Highlight Long-Term Consequences

A group of researchers from the University of Milano-Bicocca and SUPSI, by means of longitudinal data provided by INVALSI (Italian Institute for the Evaluation of the Education System), has confirmed that early smartphone usage before the age of 12 does not bring benefits. Instead, it is associated with lower digital skills, higher problematic smartphone use and can, in fact, diminish the academic performance of students.

Republican ladies love Michael Lucas

Who knew that proud Republican Lee Ann Womack and top cheerleader for President Bush Angie Harmon had any eye for quality? It is common knowledge that Michael Lucas makes some of the hottest (and most expensive) smut in the business, but until now I thought it was only the men of the right wing who knew anything about gay porn. Posing with Lucas during NY Fashion Week, apparently these two ladies are quite familiar. Perhaps [PARTIAL POST: VISIT THE SITE TO READ THE REST AND SEE PICTURES]

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau

From The Economist’s moving and evocative obituary of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, who died on May 18th: AS HE rubbed the horses down in the bitter cold and slush of the Eastern Front in 1943, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, then 18, sang songs into their ears. Brahms’s “Four Serious Songs”, perhaps, or a Bach cantata, both of which he […]

February 10, 2006 – Yesterday, the Transportation Security Administration suspended work on Secure Flight; the agencies long awaited and very expensive airline passenger screening system. Development work on the system has been plagued with trouble for the past four years. And the system has faced stiff opposition from consumers concerned about privacy. But if Secure Flight has proven anything, it’s been that it has more lives than most cats. So is this the end of the program? Unfortunately the answer is, “Probably not.”

10 year old Audi Q5 diesel: keep it or sell it?

I own a 10-year-old Audi Q5 diesel, which is in mint condition even after 1.2 lakh kilometres. It has performed flawlessly, apart from one sensor issue that the dealership rectified. I’ve spent about Rs 60,000 on it recently, including four new tyres and some suspension bushes. It runs like new now, and I’m absolutely in love with it. I don’t travel to Delhi-NCR much, but I’m in two minds if I should hold on to it or sell it due to its age.

Bonny Singh, Ajmer

Autocar India says: Our advice is to hang on to it. 2.0 TDI engines are brilliant and you can’t get a new car with them anymore. There is a certain pleasure in driving a diesel SUV, so enjoy it while you can! If you don’t go to Delhi-NCR very much, you are not too inconvenienced either, and we don’t think a diesel ban on 10-year-old cars will be imposed in Rajasthan in the near future.

Hydrogen Retrofit Reduces Diesel Engine Emissions By 85%

A team of engineers from UNSW Sydney have successfully converted a standard diesel engine to run as a hybrid diesel hydrogen engine. The resulting hybrid reduces CO2 emissions by 85%, and increases output efficiency by around 26%.  The team, led by Professor Shawn Kook, spent some 18 months developing the direct injection dual fuel system. The retrofitted engine runs using 90% hydrogen. Professors Kook believe that the new tech could significantly reduce the emissions from the trucking industry and the...
