Nexus between women directors and firm performance: a study on BSE 200 companies

The present study is a modest attempt to investigate the impact of gender diversity on firm performance of BSE 200 listed companies. The study is based on the secondary data collected from the EMIS database and the corporate governance reports for a period of eight years, i.e., from 2012 to 2019. Sample size of the present study is 174 Indian companies listed in the Bombay Stock Exchange. The study has employed multiple regression models by considering the endogeneity issue to empirically test the impact of gender diversity on firm performance in Indian context. Based on the multiple regression models, we find that the impact of gender diversity is positive and significant on the market-based measure of firm performance. However, the impact becomes negative significant when firm performance was measured by accounting based measure of firm performance.

Come Aboard! Exploring the Effects of Directorships in the Executive Labor Market

In this study, we examine the question: What do executives gain from serving on boards? We propose that board service will benefit non-CEO level executives in the executive labor market by acting as a certification mechanism and also by providing access to unique knowledge, skills, and connections. We argue that non-CEO executives who gain directorships will be more likely to be promoted to CEO both inside and outside their home firm, will be more likely to be promoted internally, and will receive higher pay from their home firms. To test our ideas, we employ propensity score matching to construct a longitudinal sample of 2,104 top executives of large, publicly traded companies in the United States over the period 1996 to 2012. Results provide consistent support for our theory.

Dual Directors and the Governance of Corporate Spinoffs

This paper investigates how "dual directors" enable firms that undertake corporate spinoffs to manage their post-spinoff relationships with the firms they divest, as well as the performance implications of dual directors serving simultaneously on these companies' boards. While the presence of dual directors is positively associated with the average stock market returns of parent and spinoff firms, their presence is increasingly positively associated with parent firm performance but increasingly negatively associated with spinoff firm performance as the share of sales a spinoff firm makes to its parent firm rises. These findings show that while dual directors give a parent firm power over its spinoff firm, dual directors only exercise that power at the spinoff firm's expense when that company is highly dependent on its parent firm.

A new guild study says women and minorities were largely shut out of the ranks of TV directors again last season.

The Directors Guild of America report released Wednesday said employers have made no significant improvement in diversity hiring for TV series in the last four years.

According to the study, white males directed the vast majority of the 3,500 cable, broadcast and high-budget online episodes made for the 2013-14 season.

The same holds true for the three previous years, according to guild findings.

In a statement, Directors Guild President Paris Barclay said it can be "shockingly difficult" to persuade those who control industry hiring to make even small improvements.

Directors' Duties - Laws versus Perception

Professor Pearlie Koh and Professor Tan Hwee Hoon The law on Directors’ duties is an important part of corporate governance. It is therefore unsurprising that a large part of existing research focuses on understanding what the law requires and how it applies in different situations. Such research is however largely reactive. Taking a fresh perspective, SMU Associate Professor of Law Pearlie Koh and SMU Assoc Prof of Organisational Behaviour & Human Resources Tan Hwee Hoon collaborated in a multi-disciplinary research which examined how company directors in Singapore understand the law as it applies to them, the gaps in awareness, and whether the laws and regulations work as envisaged. In this podcast, they discussed the details of this study, which is expected to form a valuable basis for further research in the future.

3 Must Read Books for Choir Directors

Here are 3 books that I have found most useful in helping me become a better Choir Director. I highly recommend them and if you have any suggestions for me I am all ears and ready to learn.

Sing 6-7-8! - Choral

This book has a great way of simplifying things. It allows you to see things from a younger students perspective from someone who has worked for many years with that age group. I have heard it said before that just because you can do does not mean you can teach This book has lots of great tools to help bridge that gap.
The adolescent years can be a challenge for any choir director, but this practical handbook by Roger Emerson provides an engaging and witty approach to working with these young singers. Ideal for experienced educators and those new to the field, this text is full of creative ideas and solid solutions in an easy-to-read question and answer format. The fifty topics include recruiting, the adolescent voice, choral tone, classroom management, budgets, choral balance and blend, sight-reading, repertoire, programming, incorporating pop music into the choral program, working with your administrators and colleagues, parent and community relations, helpful recommended resources and much more!

The book is a comprehensive guide to teaching vocal technique through designing an efficient choral warm-up that gives the choir "tools" to sing and hear better. Among the topics presented are alignment (using Alexander Body Mapping principles), inhalation, exhalation, support, resonance, vowel colors, leaps, range extension, crescendo/decrescendo, martellato, staccato, teaching procedures for diction (plus general diction guidelines), teaching and reinforcing rhythm and consistent tempo, and strategies for teaching intonation. This is a comprehensive guide for choral directors that: helps conductors plan and implement efficient choral warm-ups builds healthy voices within the choral rehearsal provides vocalises that have accompaniments complete with modulations upward and downward categorizes vocalises according to specific vocal objectives

Not too often did I find a college text book that I really liked but here is one exception. This text provides a concise and practical introduction to choral techniques and conducting for potential choral conductors. The author-America's premier choral conductor, mentored by Robert Shaw-brings 43 years of teaching and workshop experience to this text.
