alien Extraordinary anisotropic thermal expansion in photosalient crystals By scripts.iucr.org Published On :: 2020-01-01 Although a plethora of metal complexes have been characterized, those having multifunctional properties are very rare. This article reports three isotypical complexes, namely [Cu(benzoate)L2], where L = 4-styrylpyridine (4spy) (1), 2'-fluoro-4-styrylpyridine (2F-4spy) (2) and 3'-fluoro-4-styrylpyridine (3F-4spy) (3), which show photosalient behavior (photoinduced crystal mobility) while they undergo [2+2] cycloaddition. These crystals also exhibit anisotropic thermal expansion when heated from room temperature to 200°C. The overall thermal expansion of the crystals is impressive, with the largest volumetric thermal expansion coefficients for 1, 2 and 3 of 241.8, 233.1 and 285.7 × 10−6 K−1, respectively, values that are comparable to only a handful of other reported materials known to undergo colossal thermal expansion. As a result of the expansion, their single crystals occasionally move by rolling. Altogether, these materials exhibit unusual and hitherto untapped solid-state properties. Full Article text

alien Conservation managers and public unaware of invasive alien species??? true risks By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Tue, 17 Sep 2013 14:54:41 +0100 Neither the public nor conservation managers are fully aware of the different risks posed by invasive alien species (IAS), new research suggests. A study examining perceptions of five invasive species in the UK shows that both conservation managers and the public regard some highly damaging species as ???low risk???, and that their awareness does not increase with the amount of scientific research on the topic. alien Alien invasions are rising: study shows location- level factors are the main drivers of success for invading bird species worldwide By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Fri, 06 Mar 2020 10:53:30 GMT Invasions of alien species are rising at an alarming rate, largely due to growing global trade and transport routes. Preventing the successful establishment of alien species by better understanding the factors determining success is a step toward limiting the threat of future biological invasions. Statistical modelling using observed bird invasion data — including location, event and species-level factors showed which factors were key to successful establishment by the alien species. alien Routine monitoring of Mediterranean boats and marinas could help protect ecosystems from invasive alien species By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thur, 30 Apr 2020 17:16:30 GMT A survey of over 600 private boats docked in marinas throughout the Mediterranean showed that 71% are carrying non-indigenous species. In certain cases, non-indigenous species can become ‘invasive’ and have enormous and long-lasting impacts on ecosystems. The findings suggest that a common monitoring strategy may be necessary to prevent further disruptions to natural ecosystems. Full Article

alien How to prevent alien plant invasions in the global ornamental horticulture trade? By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thur, 06 September 2018 9:23:19 GMT Alien plant invasions can have significant environmental, ecosystem and economic implications. Since ornamental horticulture is the primary pathway for invasive alien plant introductions, it is a suitable focus for prevention policies. A recent review of published evidence has examined the effectiveness of four major instruments: pre-border import restrictions, post-border sales bans, industry codes of conduct, and consumer education. The study highlights that, while each instrument has the potential to contribute to a reduction in plant invasion risk, none is sufficient to achieve this goal alone. The researchers, therefore, describe how the four instruments can be integrated along the ornamental horticulture industry supply chain to reduce risk more effectively, and outlines the role that government, industry and other stakeholders must play to achieve this goal. alien The global spread of alien plants By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 24 September 2015 9:54:32 GMT Driven by trade, the spread of alien species is increasing worldwide. This study combined 60 years of trade data with that on biodiversity and climate to model the spread of plant species across 147 countries. The model predicts significant increases in plant invasions in the next 20 years, especially for emerging economies. The authors say trade legislation must consider biological invasion and focus on regions at high risk. Full Article

alien Alien invasive species leave European mariculture areas aboard pieces of anthropogenic litter By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thur, 25 Oct 2018 13:11:19 GMT Areas of mariculture — where marine organisms are cultivated for food — have been identified as important source areas for the dispersal of invasive alien species (IAS) via artificial floating litter. In order to identify IAS at high risk of dispersal via this method, researchers have analysed fouled anthropogenic litter sampled on beaches in two important European mariculture areas. Overall, the team detected eight aquaculture-related IAS attached to anthropogenic litter. All of these species are well adapted to rafting on artificial surfaces and have high potential to disperse in this way, suggesting that they are suitable candidates for closer monitoring and policy action in the future. alien Bioshields - coastal protection or harmful alien species? By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 22 Apr 2010 12:48:41 +0100 Planting vegetation to protect coasts from natural disasters, such as tsunamis and cyclones, may damage native ecosystems, according to a new study. As there is also questionable evidence on the effectiveness of these 'bioshields', the study suggested a re-think on coastal vegetation policy and research. Full Article
alien Wealthier European regions have more alien species By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 29 Jul 2010 11:57:11 +0100 Wealthier, more populated regions of Europe are more likely to have greater numbers of invasive alien species, according to researchers. A new study has indicated that human factors are more influential in encouraging alien invasions than the climate or whether the species are introduced to an island or a mainland region. Full Article
alien Current economic activity leaves an alien species 'invasion debt' By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 24 Feb 2011 15:39:19 GMT Past economic activity is more likely to explain the current pattern of biological invasions across Europe than recent human activities, according to a new study. It can take several decades before a newly introduced species becomes established and spreads, which may mean that recent invasions caused by current economic activities could create an 'invasion debt' for future generations. alien Data on alien species in need of standardisation By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 16 Feb 2012 12:08:58 GMT A new study has identified several differences between two major European databases on alien species, which could be communicating mixed messages for biodiversity policymakers. Researchers recommend creating a single pan-European database to address these differences. Full Article
alien Invasive alien plants threaten Antarctic biodiversity By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 3 May 2012 11:42:25 +0100 According to new research, several areas of the Antarctic are at considerable risk from the establishment of 'alien' plants accidentally carried by visitors to the region. The findings demonstrate that invasive species pose risks even in remote areas and that these risks are likely to increase as the climate changes. Full Article
alien Invasive alien slug could spread further with climate change By ec.europa.eu Published On :: Thu, 20 Dec 2012 10:00:41 GMT A recent study sheds light on why some alien species are more likely to become invasive than others.
