by By emjaybee in "So how's that work from home working out for you at home?" on MeFi By www.metafilter.com Published On :: Wed, 06 May 2020 15:51:34 GMT "It's silly to say, 'I just trust them all,' and close my eyes and hope for the best," he said. Some workers have grimaced at the surveillance, he added, but most should have nothing to hide: "If you're uncomfortable with me confirming the obvious [about your work], what does that say about your motives?"Actually, not being able to provide your employees with the least amount of autonomy marks you as a shitty (and ineffective; how much work are YOU getting done if you are spying on your team constantly?) manager. Hire good people; review their work; correct errors. That is your job as manager (along with putting out fires, managing interpersonal issues, and administrative tasks). People also respond positively to trust and productivity goes up (as well as problem-solving ability).Mistrust means people do the minimum, stop caring about their job except as revenue generation, and leave as soon as they can. They certainly won't take initiative, why bother? Clearly their boss/company sees them as ungrateful jerks just itching to slack off and steal. How you treat your employees affects how they perform. This is not rocket science. Full Article
by By nebulawindphone in "Third quarter phenomenon: the bacon wars" on MeFi By www.metafilter.com Published On :: Mon, 04 May 2020 03:24:46 GMT Oh for fuck's sake. There's some really interesting stuff in these links, most of it has nothing to do with the three-quarter point of anything, and none of it is making any kind of claim about when this will end. It's a bunch of interesting stories about how people fail under isolation, and fail harder when relief still feels out of reach. Sure, one thing that can make it feel out of reach is knowing you've still got a quarter of your mission left. Another thing is having no clue how long things will last, which hopefully we can all agree is relevant? Can we take a deep breath, pretend that Athanassiel chose a pull quote that wasn't total pedant-bait, and start over? Full Article
by Perform Record a Version of the Song "Down by the Bay" (Remote) By jobs.metafilter.com Published On :: Tue, 14 Apr 2020 19:21:37 -0800 I wrote a book for my son's birthday that is a version of the song Down by the Bay. I would love to accompany the not-quite-a-book with an MP3 of the song that he can sing along with. If you can sing and play an instrument (guitar, piano, kazoo, whatever) and put together a fun/happy/lively recording of the song, I want you! I was thinking $50 CAD? But I don't really know what's reasonable here. Also, I would somewhat prefer a Canadian just because I know how to email/text money to a Canadian, but I'm not really sure how I would pay anyone else. But if you have a way for me to pay you (I dunno a web site where I can "checkout" or whatever) then I'm happy for whoever. Full Article music perform record

The White House coronavirus task force released guidelines on April 16 to encourage state governors to adopt a phased approach to lifting restrictions across the country. Some states have moved ahead without meeting the criteria . The task force rejected a set of additional detailed draft recommendations for schools, restaurants, churches and mass transit systems from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that it considered " overly prescriptive ." A number of states have already begun to lift restrictions, allowing for businesses including hair salons, diners and tattoo parlors to once again begin accepting customers. Health experts have warned that reopening too quickly could result in a potential rebound in cases. States are supposed to wait to begin lifting any restrictions until they have a 14 Full Article

by Episode 0x00: Goodbye and Ahoy Hoy By faif.us Published On :: Wed, 06 Oct 2010 13:22:00 -0400 Bradley and Karen announced that the Software Freedom Law Show is over. Karen and Bradley announced a new show, called Free as in Freedom, that will not be affiliated with any specific organization (although Bradley and Karen keep all their various affiliations themselves. :). Show Notes: Segment 0 (00:28) Bradley mentioned OsamaK is not happy at Bradley and Karen for not having a new oggcast for a month. (00:45) Bradley no long works at the Software Freedom Law Center. He now works full time at the Software Freedom Conservancy. (02:00) Bradley thinks everything related to FLOSS should be called “Software Freedom”. (03:10) Karen and Bradley mention that many people in the software freedom world are involved in multiple organizations. (04:00) Karen is an officer and lawyer to Software Freedom Conservancy. (04:30) Conservancy provides non-profit infrastructure and services. (05:10) Conservancy helps software freedom projects focus on development, and aggregate projects into one place. (06:20) Conservancy will be expanding its service plan now that Bradley is full time. (06:46) Conservancy will try do copyright assignment in a community-focused way, only if the developers want it. Conservancy will also do more GPL enforcement than previously. (07:20) Bradley mentioned that Matthew Garrett has been doing some GPL enforcement, and Bradley thanked him for it publicly. (07:50) Karen thinks we'll see more enforcement over time, by more people. (08:14) Bradley wants to help Conservancy's member projects do more fundraising for initiatives to fund software development activity. (08:40) Bradley mentioned that Matt Mackall is doing Mercurial development funded through Conservancy. (09:20) As of earlier this year, Bradley is a volunteer director of the FSF, and now has additional volunteer work that he needs to do, while Conservancy (his former volunteer work) becomes his day job. (11:09) Bradley mentions that once you start doing something in the software freedom world, it's hard to stop once people start to rely on your work. (12:30) Conservancy handles a lot of “boring” but essential stuff for developers to continue in their project. (14:20) Bradley mentioned that his early volunteer work at FSF was also doing the boring stuff, and indeed a lot of his work has been willing to do the boring stuff (15:30) Karen mentions that no one fights over the work that just needs to get done. (16:30) Bradley discussed the fact that for-profit corporate control of projects is dangerous, and one of the things Conservancy and similar non-profits offers is an opportunity to have a non-profit with the public interest at heart in the center of their community. (17:39) Bradley mentioned the LibreOffice by the Document Foundation (18:03) Karen points out that for-profit and non-profit go hand-in-hand. But, Bradley argues that steward of a FLOSS project should always be an NGO. Karen agrees. (19:00-19:30) Bradley doesn't really believe that there are projects that would “never happen” without a for-profit company starting it. Karen disagrees. The Software Freedom Law Show is over This is the last episode of the Software Freedom Law Show. (21:10) Karen will make sure that the SFLC RSS feeds remain valid. Bradley points out that there are new RSS feeds for both the mp3 version and the ogg version of the new show, Free as in Freedom (21:33, 22:41) The new show is basically just the Karen and Bradley show, now named Free as in Freedom, hosted on faif.us. (23:43) Bradley mentioned that everywhere he's ever worked, he always had root on most of the boxes. He doesn't know what it's like to work somewhere and not have root. (27:50) Karen got in trouble at her first law firm job for installing software on computers. (28:21) Dan Scott sent a gift to Bradley and Karen Soap with 20-Ds in them. Send feedback and comments on the cast to <oggcast@faif.us>. You can keep in touch with Free as in Freedom on our IRC channel, #faif on irc.freenode.net, and by following Conservancy on on Twitter and and FaiF on Twitter. by Robyn - Honey By beta.prx.org Published On :: Wed, 04 Sep 2019 17:00:00 -0000 Robyn is a Swedish singer and songwriter. Her first album came out in 1995, when she was 16 years old. It went platinum in the US, double-platinum in Sweden. Since then, she’s been nominated for five Grammys and started her own record label. But there was an eight-year gap between Robyn’s album Body Talk, which came out in 2010, and her most recent album, Honey, which came out last October. Time, Rolling Stone, and Pitchfork all named it one of the best albums of the year. For Song Exploder, Robyn breaks down the song “Honey,” the title track from that album. The first time the public heard the song was in a 2017 episode of the HBO show Girls, but that’s not the final version that was released on the album. In this episode, Robyn traces the long history of how she made “Honey,” a song that The New York Times called “her masterpiece.” songexploder.net/robyn Full Article Entertainment Music Society & Culture

by How do I approach learning to sew by way of this very specific project? By ask.metafilter.com Published On :: Fri, 08 May 2020 22:33:41 GMT I want to teach myself to sew by replicating this apron, probably many, many times. I bought the apron; what next? After spending a lot of the past couple of months in a Bon Appétit rabbit hole (thanks MeFi!), I'm obsessed with this apron that seems to be favored by many of the presenters. Despite its ridiculous price, I went ahead and bought one as a bit of retail therapy. Well, it arrived today and I loooooove it. I want to give them to all my friends and family, and I want ten of them hanging in my own pantry, but spending $5K on linen aprons from France isn't on the agenda. So, no time like the present to merge this motivation with another long-standing goal, which is to get competent with my sewing machine, a Singer from... maybe the early '90s? It was given to me by a friend about ten years ago, and since then I have used it three times, always with a more experienced helper to thread the machine, help cut the pieces, etc. The last time it came out of the closet was at least four years ago, so please assume that I am starting from zero. I have watched a fair amount of Project Runway, but despite that I do not really know where to begin :) This tutorial seems reasonable easy to follow to make a pattern, but... then what? Is there anything more to it than just trying and trying again, presuming I can't ask or hire anyone for help in the foreseeable future? What is the absolute cheapest fabric I can practice on that will help me not ruin the first few yards of linen that I (with luck) will ultimately graduate to? Can I just use reasonably-sized rags/old clothes from the basement? Any general tips on learning to sew on your own as an adult are also welcome! by Family close but apart - are drive-bys just making it worse? By ask.metafilter.com Published On :: Sat, 09 May 2020 11:17:21 GMT This is not a question about social distancing procedures as much as it is about the psychology of it.We are a close-knit family living in four separate households in the same city. There are a few dozen cases in our metro area (under a million people). We are not seeing each other in person but we do weekly drive-bys where we stand under the balcony and wave while talking on the phone or shouting from the window. The kids seem to enjoy it mostly but I fear it might be confusing for them as well. Why can't auntie come in when she's already here? The toddler says solemnly, BECAUSE VIRUS, but I'm not sure how much he understands. He once told Grandma on the phone "Grammy is not coming cause she's angry with me". I (the single aunt) work at a hospital so there is no way we can merge households (none of them really) and it looks like we have to be apart for who knows how long. Wouldn't it be psychologically healthier for the toddler and the other kids to just let the relationship slide for a while instead of maintaining this bitter-sweet balcony relationship? We do video calls but the small ones get bored easily. I'm okay with being more distant if it's better for them but I honestly just don't know. The parents so far are on the side of let's maintain as much (distant) contact as we can - if anything, I am the most paranoid one when it comes to contact precautions - but I'd like to make up my own mind. If we cannot see each other for at least a year does it make sense to maintain the closeness and how much of it? We were almost like one household in several apartments before the pandemic hit. Now we can't, BECAUSE VIRUS. I wonder if anyone else is in a similar situation and what your approach is. How do you make it easier on the kids? by beloved ***, survived by ***.... By ask.metafilter.com Published On :: Sat, 09 May 2020 16:50:16 GMT I am trying to find the paid death notices section in the NYT. I am a bit frazzled and can't find them with the newspaper's own search engine or with Google. Not the regular obituaries written by journalists about famous people but the paid private death notices. I have read these all my life and now when I need them I can't locate them. When I search for "paid notices," "memorial," "paid memorial notices," or "paid obituaries" I just get other articles with those words in the text, or in one case, one paid death notice from 2006. Can you please give me the search term to read the whole set of recent paid death notices in the NYT online editions? Or a link? If it matters I'm not in the New York area, though I don't think the online papers are localized like the hard copies of the Times. Full Article deathnotices nyt
