Probablemente no exista un yacimiento en la Sierra de Atapuerca que haya concitado tantas discusiones como la Sima de los Huesos. Esto sucede porque se han encontrado en su interior miles de restos de homínidos del Pleistoceno medio.

En la Sima de los Huesos, como ya hemos dicho con anterioridad, no existe registro de herbívoros, sólo de omnívoros y carnívoros. Además, los restos esqueléticos localizados de estos animales no presentan marcas de corte producidos por los cuchillos de los homínidos. Es decir, se trata de una acumulación muy distinta a las que hemos aludido.
