exam Examining the Case for Dental Hygienists Teaching Predoctoral Dental Students: A Two-Part Study By www.jdentaled.org Published On :: 2019-12-01T06:00:18-08:00 Dental students in North American dental schools are exposed to faculty members with various professional backgrounds. These faculty members may include dentists, dental hygienists, and scientists without clinical dental credentials. The practice of dental hygienists’ educating predoctoral dental students has not been well documented. The aims of this two-part study were to investigate the parameters of didactic, preclinical, and clinical instruction of dental students by dental hygienist faculty members in North American dental schools and to explore dental students’ perceptions of this form of teaching. In part one, a survey was sent electronically to the clinical or academic affairs deans of all 76 American Dental Education Association (ADEA) member dental schools in 2017. Twenty-nine responded, for a 38.2% response rate. In 76% of the responding schools, dental hygienists were teaching dental students. Most respondents reported that, in their schools, the minimum degree required to teach didactically was a master’s, while a bachelor’s degree was required for preclinical and clinical courses. There was no significant association between dental hygienists’ instructing dental students and having a dental hygiene educational program at the institution. In part two of the study, a questionnaire was completed by 102 graduating dental students (85% response rate) at one U.S. university to evaluate the impact of dental hygienist educators. Among the respondents, 87% reported feeling that dental hygienists were very effective educators. There were no significant differences in responses between traditional and advanced standing international dental students. This study found that dental hygienists were educating dental students in many North American dental schools and were doing so in curricular content beyond periodontics and that their educational contributions at a sample school were valued by the dental students there. exam A fast and effective method for dissecting parasitic spores: myxozoans as an example [METHODS [amp ] TECHNIQUES] By jeb.biologists.org Published On :: 2020-04-06T07:24:08-07:00 Qingxiang Guo, Yang Liu, Yanhua Zhai, and Zemao GuDisassembling the parasitic spores and acquiring the main subunits is a prerequisite for deep understanding of the basic biology of parasites. Herein we present a fast and efficient method to dissect the myxospores in a few steps, which mainly involved sonication, sucrose density gradient and Percoll density gradient. We tested our method on three myxozoans species and demonstrated this method allows the dismembering of myxospores, isolation of intact and clean nematocysts and shell valves within 2h by low-cost. This new tool will facilitate subsequent analyses and enable a better understanding of the ecological and evolutionary significance of parasitic spores. Full Article
exam The progressive development of microfabrics from initial deposition to slump deformation: an example from a modern sedimenary melange on the Nankai Prism By jgs.lyellcollection.org Published On :: 2020-05-04T02:10:48-07:00 The progressive development of microfabrics from initial deposition to slump deformation and then a submarine slide was investigated in an active subduction zone using cores recovered during the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 333. A Pleistocene–Holocene sequence was recovered at Site C0018A, which was located on a slope basin on the footwall of the megasplay fault in the Nankai Trough, SW Japan. Six mass-transport deposit units intercalated with coherent intervals were recovered from the upper 190 m of the drilled succession. The initial microfabrics in the undeformed hemipelagic sediments were characterized by random and porous fabrics composed predominantly of clay aggregations and connectors. The initial fabrics were cardhouse fabrics, which consist of clay flakes with edge-to-edge (E–E) and/or edge-to-face (E–F) contacts. These initial microfabrics developed into compacted microfabrics, which are random and consolidated fabrics (bookhouse fabrics) that consist of clay flakes with E–F and/or face-to-face (F–F) contacts and develop during burial as a pure shear deformation. During slumping, these fabrics were then deformed under simple shear to become predominantly F–F contacts and form clay chains. Thus, the microfabrics in these submarine slides are a sedimentary mélange that developed locally into a preferred clay orientation with F–F contacts. Supplementary material: A schematic illustration showing sedimentation processes and fabrics is available at https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.c.4483385 Thematic collection: This article is part of the Polygenetic mélanges collection available at: https://www.lyellcollection.org/cc/polygenetic-melanges Full Article
exam Discriminating aggregate sources with in situ mineral chemistry: an Irish example By qjegh.lyellcollection.org Published On :: 2020-05-01T00:46:18-07:00 The need to characterize and distinguish geographically adjacent aggregate quarry sources prompted the SEM-EDS analysis of pyrite (FeS2) within fill material taken from eight different quarry sources. This experiment was undertaken to investigate the possibility of geochemically separating these quarry sources based on the major element concentration of their pyrite. The results show that median values for Fe and S vary by up to 7.6 and 8.55 wt% respectively. By implementing statistical methods, including k-means clustering and principal component analysis, it is possible to geochemically discriminate three of the eight sources. Full Article
exam Quantifying the Vial-Capping Process: Reexamination Using Micro-Computed Tomography By journal.pda.org Published On :: 2020-04-09T09:40:03-07:00 A vial-capping process for lyophilization stopper configurations was previously quantified using residual seal force (RSF). A correlation between RSF and container closure integrity (CCI) was established, and component positional offsets were identified to be the primary source of variability in RSF measurements. To gain insight into the effects of stopper geometry on CCI, serum stoppers with the same rubber formulation were investigated in this study. Unlike lyophilization stoppers that passed CCI (per helium leak testing) even with RSF of 0 N owing to their excellent valve seal, serum stoppers consistently failed CCI when RSF was <15.8 N. When the plug was removed, both types of stoppers exhibited a comparable critical lower RSF limit (19–20 N), below which CCI could not be maintained. When CCI was retested at later time points (up to 6 mo), some previously failed vials passed CCI, suggesting that CCI improvement might be related to rubber relaxation (viscous flow), which can fill minor imperfections on the vial finish. To confirm component positional offsets are the primary sources of RSF variability, a novel quantification tool—micro-computed tomography (micro-CT)—was used in this study. Micro-CT provided images for quantification of positional offsets of the cap and stopper that directly correlated with RSF fluctuations. Serum stoppers and lyophilization stoppers are comparable in RSF variations, although lyophilization stoppers are more robust in CCI. The use of micro-CT provides a nondestructive and innovative tool in quantitatively analyzing component features of capped vials that would otherwise be difficult to investigate. Full Article
exam The never ending success story of tranexamic acid in acquired bleeding By www.haematologica.org Published On :: 2020-05-01T00:05:41-07:00 Tranexamic acid (TXA) is an anti-fibrinolytic agent that acts by inhibiting plasminogen activation and fibrinolysis. Although its first clinical use dates back more than 50 years, this hemostatic agent is still the object of intense clinical and developmental research. In particular, renewed interest in TXA has arisen following evidence that it has a beneficial effect in reducing blood loss in a variety of medical and surgical conditions at increased risk of bleeding. Given this characteristic, TXA is currently considered a mainstay of Patient Blood Management programs aimed at reducing patients’ exposure to allogeneic blood transfusion. Importantly, recent large randomized controlled trials have consistently documented that the use of TXA confers a survival advantage in a number of globally critical clinical conditions associated with acute bleeding, including traumatic injury and post-partum hemorrhage, without increasing the thromboembolic risk.
