with Comics artist with "cartoon realism" style. (London) By jobs.metafilter.com Published On :: Mon, 06 May 2024 14:54:51 GMT I'm a published writer with a completed script for a non-fiction graphic novel, but no-one to draw it. It's a real-world setting and cast with no fantasy or superhero elements. The story's a serious one, so the art needs to match that tone. Initially, I just need ten pages of finished B&W art (pencils & inks) to use as I pitch the project round suitable publishers. For the right artist this could grow into a paid commission for the full book. I'm happy to agree either a page rate deal or a 50/50 ownership split (including ancillary rights). The story has proven TV/film potential. If you'd like to be considered, please Metamail me with a link where I can find your samples and details of any comics work you've done before. Thank you. with Maps app with custom route selection By ask.metafilter.com Published On :: Fri, 08 Jul 2016 18:50:41 -0800 Is there a maps app that will give me time/traffic estimates on the route of MY choice? So for example, I ask Google Maps to navigate me back home and they give me time & traffic for a couple different options. But in many cases there's another route that I want to take for my own reasons that's not being presented, and I want to see how it's doing traffic-wise. I would like to be able to input the street/bridge/whatever I want to take and get a route based on that. Does such a thing exist? I'm on iOS (current).I know I can add a stop along the route to force it to go the way I want in the worst case scenario but this isn't always possible or practical. I would like to find out if there's an app that has this functionality built in.Waze doesn't do this either. Full Article maps google googlemaps apps app choice route routechoice stumped
with By rd45 in "Handling post-infidelity situation with partner & affair partner" on Ask MeFi By ask.metafilter.com Published On :: Thu, 07 Nov 2024 20:06:36 GMT I don't disagree with the advice already provided, but I think you're using the word "boundary" in an odd way. You don't get to set boundaries on other people's behaviour, even when you're married to them. You can set a boundary around your own behaviour, then other people decide how they'll respond. In this case, you might say: if you continue a friendship with B, our relationship will be at an end. Then, the ball is in R's court - he can decide what to do next. Full Article

I'd say the likelihood you'll be a target of political violence is pretty close to zero. with By Zumbador in "How would you suggest I deal with confrontation from a MAGA'er?" on Ask MeFi By ask.metafilter.com Published On :: Fri, 08 Nov 2024 16:25:05 GMT This does sound very much like your anxiety latching on to a potential future and you getting stuck in that.Others can give you advice about dealing with this particular scenario. But here are some things to remember:Seeking reassurance from others usually results in your anxiety getting worse, as their advice makes the imaginary danger seem more real.No amount of rehearsing and imagining and ruminating will make you any safer. In fact, trying to prepare for this scenario means you're staying in the anxiety space for longer.Don't try to fight your scary thoughts, don't argue with yourself. Just note the thought and briefly describe what you're doing to yourself in a non judgemental way."I'm arguing with an imaginary person right now""I'm trying to predict the future""I'm ruminating right now.""I'm seeking reassurance"You have the power to reassure yourself, and THAT kind of reassurance really works.Change catastrophising thoughts into compassionate realism."I don't know what might happen in the future, but I'm going to cope with it when it dies""It's possible that this frightening thing might happen, and it might be unpleasant, but I will deal with it if it does and then it will just be another memory."Find ways to distract yourself from your spiralling thoughts. I like explaining a topic I'm really interested in out loud to myself as a way to drown out stuck thoughts.Trying to prepare for something that *might* happen just means you're making yourself be in that horrible scary worry space for much longer than it would take for the scary thing to happen. You can't control wether or not this thing you fear will happen, but you can control how much you focus on it. Distraction is good! Be with people you enjoy, watch a comfort show, dance to music you love, do something to make yourself feel good. Full Article
with By warriorqueen in "Handling post-infidelity situation with partner & affair partner" on Ask MeFi By ask.metafilter.com Published On :: Thu, 07 Nov 2024 19:55:27 GMT My marriage is only monogamish, so I'm saying this with some bias towards polyamory: If your spouse want to prioritize this friendship over your stated boundary, then your spouse is prioritizing the friendship over your marriage. In this case, you really don't have to explain why. In fact, I'd stop explaining why. It's not a comprehension problem. It's that your partner doesn't want to do what you are asking. Here's the words I would use: I do not want you to continue this friendship. If you do, I am going to have to take steps towards ending our marriage. We should discuss this in counselling. In other words even in marriages where there's less emphasis on monogamy, the main thing is that you have to respect your partner's limits, or else you aren't partners. I'm sorry your partner is putting you through this. Full Article
with Are Prosecutors Too Cozy With Police? Some DAs Say Campaign Contributions Need To End By www.gpbnews.org Published On :: Thu, 18 Jun 2020 18:06:00 +0000 The growing calls for systemic reform of American policing follow years of rising anger at the ongoing deaths of African Americans at the hands of law enforcement, including the recent killing of George Floyd. The calls for change run the gamut from severely restricting police use of deadly force, creating a national database of abusive officers and re-directing taxpayer money away from police toward social programs that improve education and tackle crises including homelessness, poverty and mental health care . But one key problem has gotten less attention: the conflict of interest, real and perceived, between prosecutors and police unions. When district attorneys run for the office they get political donations from a range of interests including powerful, well-funded police unions who represent the officers that district attorneys will be called to prosecute in the event of officer brutality, corruption or even murder. "We need to do everything that we can in this moment to avoid not Full Article
with NYPD Officer Accused Of Using Chokehold Charged With Strangulation By www.gpbnews.org Published On :: Fri, 26 Jun 2020 14:51:00 +0000 The New York police officer accused of using a chokehold in an incident captured on video Sunday has been charged with strangulation. The officer, 39-year-old David Afanador, was suspended the same day the cellphone video appeared to show him choking a Black man on a Queens boardwalk. Now he's been arrested and charged with felony strangulation and attempted strangulation. Afanador pleaded not guilty and was released Thursday afternoon without bail. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz noted that New York state had criminalized chokeholds just days earlier. "The ink from the pen Gov. Cuomo used to sign this legislation was barely dry before this officer allegedly employed the very tactic the new law was designed to prohibit," Katz said in a statement. "Police officers are entrusted to serve and protect — and the conduct alleged here cannot be tolerated." Afanador could face up to seven years in prison if convicted. Sam Clovis said on Thursday that he would not go forward in trying to become the USDA's undersecretary for research, education and economics. That news followed a quick series of connected developments in the Russia investigation being conducted by the Department of Justice special counsel: first, a guilty plea — announced Monday —by a former campaign adviser who worked for Clovis, and then, reports that Clovis has been interviewed by special counsel Robert Mueller's team in the Russia case and also testified before a Washington, D.C., grand jury. with With A Glug Of Potion And A New Translation, 'Asterix' Aims To Conquer America By www.gpbnews.org Published On :: Wed, 15 Jul 2020 11:00:00 +0000 Asterix the Gaul, which kicks off the first volume of Papercutz' new Asterix reissues, doesn't feel like the genesis of an international juggernaut. Sure, the 1959 cartoon is funny: Diminutive-but-crafty Asterix and his towering sidekick Obelix are Laurel and Hardy transplanted to 50 B.C., delivering gonzo comeuppance to the Roman soldiers who hope to bring all of France under Caesar's rule. But nothing about René Goscinny's goofy narrative or Albert Uderzo's hyperactive, deliberately lowbrow drawings portend what the Asterix series became: a half-century-spanning, globally-bestselling, nation-defining phenomenon. Asterix's enduring popularity has puzzled critics for decades, even as the series has racked up sales of 380 million books, been translated into 111 languages and spawned dozens of adaptations in various media. In France, Asterix is a treasured icon, the series' worldwide success a source of national pride. "Asterix is our ego," a Frenchwoman told The New York Times in 1996. Full Article

JOHN GARAMENDI: Good to be with you. with Restaurants Would Get More Flexibility With Workers' Tips Under Proposed Rule By gpbnews.org Published On :: Mon, 07 Oct 2019 22:17:00 +0000 The Trump administration has proposed a new rule governing the wages of tipped employees, after an earlier effort sparked a backlash from waitstaff, bartenders and other workers. The proposed rule from the Labor Department would allow employers to require more widespread sharing of tips with "back of the house" coworkers, such as cooks and dishwashers. The rule makes clear, however, that employers cannot pocket those tips or use them to reward managers and supervisors. The rule would also give employers more flexibility in assigning non-tipped tasks to workers who rely on gratuities for a big part of their income. The proposal was cheered by the restaurant industry. But workers' advocates and some lawmakers say they still have some concerns. "This rule establishes once and for all an appropriate balance, and ends arbitrary and capricious regulations," said Angelo Amador, regulatory counsel for the National Restaurant Association. "We commend the U.S. Department of Labor for providing Full Article
with With China's Economy Battered By Pandemic, Millions Return To The Land For Work By www.gpbnews.org Published On :: Mon, 08 Jun 2020 15:47:00 +0000 Since the coronavirus pandemic battered China's economy, tens of millions of urban and factory jobs have evaporated. Some workers and business owners have banded together to pressure companies or local governments for subsidies and payouts. But many of the newly unemployed have instead returned to their rural villages. China's vast countryside now serves as an unemployment sponge, soaking up floating migrant workers in temporary agricultural work on small family plots. "Say a factory used to hire 1,000 temporary workers; now, without new orders, these business owners can't afford to hire this many people," Yan Xiyun, a labor intermediary, told NPR. "The factory I usually go to in previous years could easily hire 2,000 people. Now there is scarcely anyone [on the factory floor]."
