Mississippi State hired former Old Dominion women’s basketball coach Nikki McCray-Penson to replace Vic Schaefer as the Bulldogs’ head coach. Athletic director John Cohen called McCray-Penson “a proven winner who will lead one of the best programs in the nation” on the department’s website. McCray-Penson, a former Tennessee star and Women’s Basketball Hall of Famer, said it’s been a dream to coach in the Southeastern Conference and she’s “grateful and blessed for this incredible honor and opportunity.”

Abstract:
To predict time series of counts with small values and remarkable fluctuations, an available model is the $r$ states random environment process based on the negative binomial thinning operator and the geometric marginal. However, we argue that the aforementioned model may suffer from the following two drawbacks. First, under the condition of no prior information, the overdispersed property of the geometric distribution may cause the predictions fluctuate greatly. Second, because of the constraints on the model parameters, some estimated parameters are close to zero in real-data examples, which may not objectively reveal the correlation relationship. For the first drawback, an $r$ states random environment process based on the binomial thinning operator and the Poisson marginal is introduced. For the second drawback, we propose a generalized $r$ states random environment integer-valued autoregressive model based on the binomial thinning operator to model fluctuations of data. Yule–Walker and conditional maximum likelihood estimates are considered and their performances are assessed via simulation studies. Two real-data sets are conducted to illustrate the better performances of the proposed models compared with some existing models.

Abstract:
The primary goal of this paper is to introduce the zero-modified Poisson–Lindley regression model as an alternative to model overdispersed count data exhibiting inflation or deflation of zeros in the presence of covariates. The zero-modification is incorporated by considering that a zero-truncated process produces positive observations and consequently, the proposed model can be fitted without any previous information about the zero-modification present in a given dataset. A fully Bayesian approach based on the g-prior method has been considered for inference concerns. An intensive Monte Carlo simulation study has been conducted to evaluate the performance of the developed methodology and the maximum likelihood estimators. The proposed model was considered for the analysis of a real dataset on the number of bids received by $126$ U.S. firms between 1978–1985, and the impact of choosing different prior distributions for the regression coefficients has been studied. A sensitivity analysis to detect influential points has been performed based on the Kullback–Leibler divergence. A general comparison with some well-known regression models for discrete data has been presented.

Abstract:
Educational assessment usually considers a contextual questionnaire to extract relevant information from the applicants. This may include items related to socio-economical profile as well as items to extract other characteristics potentially related to applicant’s performance in the test. A careful analysis of the questionnaires jointly with the test’s results may evidence important relations between profiles and test performance. The most coherent way to perform this task in a statistical context is to use the information from the questionnaire to help explain the variability of the abilities in a joint model-based approach. Nevertheless, the responses to the questionnaire typically present missing values which, in some cases, may be missing not at random. This paper proposes a statistical methodology to model the abilities in dichotomous IRT models using the information of the contextual questionnaires via linear regression. The proposed methodology models the missing data jointly with the all the observed data, which allows for the estimation of the former. The missing data modelling is flexible enough to allow the specification of missing not at random structures. Furthermore, even if those structures are not assumed a priori, they can be estimated from the posterior results when assuming missing (completely) at random structures a priori. Statistical inference is performed under the Bayesian paradigm via an efficient MCMC algorithm. Simulated and real examples are presented to investigate the efficiency and applicability of the proposed methodology.

Abstract:
Financial returns are known to be nonnormal and tend to have fat-tailed distribution. Also, the dependence of large values in a stochastic process is an important topic in risk, insurance and finance. In the presence of missing values, we deal with the asymptotic properties of a simple “median” estimator of the tail index based on random variables with the heavy-tailed distribution function and certain dependence among the extremes. Weak consistency and asymptotic normality of the proposed estimator are established. The estimator is a special case of a well-known estimator defined in Bacro and Brito [ Statistics & Decisions 3 (1993) 133–143]. The advantage of the estimator is its robustness against deviations and compared to Hill’s, it is less affected by the fluctuations related to the maximum of the sample or by the presence of outliers. Several examples are analyzed in order to support the proofs.

Curse of dimensionality and related issues in nonparametric functional regression

Abstract:
Recently, some nonparametric regression ideas have been extended to the case of functional regression. Within that framework, the main concern arises from the infinite dimensional nature of the explanatory objects. Specifically, in the classical multivariate regression context, it is well-known that any nonparametric method is affected by the so-called “curse of dimensionality”, caused by the sparsity of data in high-dimensional spaces, resulting in a decrease in fastest achievable rates of convergence of regression function estimators toward their target curve as the dimension of the regressor vector increases. Therefore, it is not surprising to find dramatically bad theoretical properties for the nonparametric functional regression estimators, leading many authors to condemn the methodology. Nevertheless, a closer look at the meaning of the functional data under study and on the conclusions that the statistician would like to draw from it allows to consider the problem from another point-of-view, and to justify the use of slightly modified estimators. In most cases, it can be entirely legitimate to measure the proximity between two elements of the infinite dimensional functional space via a semi-metric, which could prevent those estimators suffering from what we will call the “curse of infinite dimensionality”.

Additive Bayesian variable selection under censoring and misspecification. (arXiv:1907.13563v3 [stat.ME] UPDATED)

We study the interplay of two important issues on Bayesian model selection (BMS): censoring and model misspecification. We consider additive accelerated failure time (AAFT), Cox proportional hazards and probit models, and a more general concave log-likelihood structure. A fundamental question is what solution can one hope BMS to provide, when (inevitably) models are misspecified. We show that asymptotically BMS keeps any covariate with predictive power for either the outcome or censoring times, and discards other covariates. Misspecification refers to assuming the wrong model or functional effect on the response, including using a finite basis for a truly non-parametric effect, or omitting truly relevant covariates. We argue for using simple models that are computationally practical yet attain good power to detect potentially complex effects, despite misspecification. Misspecification and censoring both have an asymptotically negligible effect on (suitably-defined) false positives, but their impact on power is exponential. We portray these issues via simple descriptions of early/late censoring and the drop in predictive accuracy due to misspecification. From a methods point of view, we consider local priors and a novel structure that combines local and non-local priors to enforce sparsity. We develop algorithms to capitalize on the AAFT tractability, approximations to AAFT and probit likelihoods giving significant computational gains, a simple augmented Gibbs sampler to hierarchically explore linear and non-linear effects, and an implementation in the R package mombf. We illustrate the proposed methods and others based on likelihood penalties via extensive simulations under misspecification and censoring. We present two applications concerning the effect of gene expression on colon and breast cancer.

COVID-19 transmission risk factors. (arXiv:2005.03651v1 [q-bio.QM])

We analyze risk factors correlated with the initial transmission growth rate of the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of cases follows an early exponential expansion; we chose as a starting point in each country the first day with 30 cases and used 12 days. We looked for linear correlations of the exponents with other variables, using 126 countries. We find a positive correlation with high C.L. with the following variables, with respective $p$-value: low Temperature ($4cdot10^{-7}$), high ratio of old vs.~working-age people ($3cdot10^{-6}$), life expectancy ($8cdot10^{-6}$), number of international tourists ($1cdot10^{-5}$), earlier epidemic starting date ($2cdot10^{-5}$), high level of contact in greeting habits ($6 cdot 10^{-5}$), lung cancer ($6 cdot 10^{-5}$), obesity in males ($1 cdot 10^{-4}$), urbanization ($2cdot10^{-4}$), cancer prevalence ($3 cdot 10^{-4}$), alcohol consumption ($0.0019$), daily smoking prevalence ($0.0036$), UV index ($0.004$, smaller sample, 73 countries), low Vitamin D levels ($p$-value $0.002-0.006$, smaller sample, $sim 50$ countries). There is highly significant correlation also with blood type: positive correlation with RH- ($2cdot10^{-5}$) and A+ ($2cdot10^{-3}$), negative correlation with B+ ($2cdot10^{-4}$). We also find positive correlation with moderate C.L. ($p$-value of $0.02sim0.03$) with: CO$_2$ emissions, type-1 diabetes, low vaccination coverage for Tuberculosis (BCG). Several such variables are correlated with each other and so they likely have common interpretations. We also analyzed the possible existence of a bias: countries with low GDP-per capita, typically located in warm regions, might have less intense testing and we discuss correlation with the above variables.

Phase Transitions of the Maximum Likelihood Estimates in the Tensor Curie-Weiss Model. (arXiv:2005.03631v1 [math.ST])

The $p$-tensor Curie-Weiss model is a two-parameter discrete exponential family for modeling dependent binary data, where the sufficient statistic has a linear term and a term with degree $p geq 2$. This is a special case of the tensor Ising model and the natural generalization of the matrix Curie-Weiss model, which provides a convenient mathematical abstraction for capturing, not just pairwise, but higher-order dependencies. In this paper we provide a complete description of the limiting properties of the maximum likelihood (ML) estimates of the natural parameters, given a single sample from the $p$-tensor Curie-Weiss model, for $p geq 3$, complementing the well-known results in the matrix ($p=2$) case (Comets and Gidas (1991)). Our results unearth various new phase transitions and surprising limit theorems, such as the existence of a 'critical' curve in the parameter space, where the limiting distribution of the ML estimates is a mixture with both continuous and discrete components. The number of mixture components is either two or three, depending on, among other things, the sign of one of the parameters and the parity of $p$. Another interesting revelation is the existence of certain 'special' points in the parameter space where the ML estimates exhibit a superefficiency phenomenon, converging to a non-Gaussian limiting distribution at rate $N^{frac{3}{4}}$. We discuss how these results can be used to construct confidence intervals for the model parameters and, as a byproduct of our analysis, obtain limit theorems for the sample mean, which provide key insights into the statistical properties of the model.

Robust location estimators in regression models with covariates and responses missing at random. (arXiv:2005.03511v1 [stat.ME])

This paper deals with robust marginal estimation under a general regression model when missing data occur in the response and also in some of covariates. The target is a marginal location parameter which is given through an $M-$functional. To obtain robust Fisher--consistent estimators, properly defined marginal distribution function estimators are considered. These estimators avoid the bias due to missing values by assuming a missing at random condition. Three methods are considered to estimate the marginal distribution function which allows to obtain the $M-$location of interest: the well-known inverse probability weighting, a convolution--based method that makes use of the regression model and an augmented inverse probability weighting procedure that prevents against misspecification. The robust proposed estimators and the classical ones are compared through a numerical study under different missing models including clean and contaminated samples. We illustrate the estimators behaviour under a nonlinear model. A real data set is also analysed.

Convergence and inference for mixed Poisson random sums. (arXiv:2005.03187v1 [math.PR])

In this paper we obtain the limit distribution for partial sums with a random number of terms following a class of mixed Poisson distributions. The resulting weak limit is a mixing between a normal distribution and an exponential family, which we call by normal exponential family (NEF) laws. A new stability concept is introduced and a relationship between {alpha}-stable distributions and NEF laws is established. We propose estimation of the parameters of the NEF models through the method of moments and also by the maximum likelihood method, which is performed via an Expectation-Maximization algorithm. Monte Carlo simulation studies are addressed to check the performance of the proposed estimators and an empirical illustration on financial market is presented.

Bayesian methods for multiple mediators: Relating principal stratification and causal mediation in the analysis of power plant emission controls

Abstract:
Emission control technologies installed on power plants are a key feature of many air pollution regulations in the US. While such regulations are predicated on the presumed relationships between emissions, ambient air pollution and human health, many of these relationships have never been empirically verified. The goal of this paper is to develop new statistical methods to quantify these relationships. We frame this problem as one of mediation analysis to evaluate the extent to which the effect of a particular control technology on ambient pollution is mediated through causal effects on power plant emissions. Since power plants emit various compounds that contribute to ambient pollution, we develop new methods for multiple intermediate variables that are measured contemporaneously, may interact with one another, and may exhibit joint mediating effects. Specifically, we propose new methods leveraging two related frameworks for causal inference in the presence of mediating variables: principal stratification and causal mediation analysis. We define principal effects based on multiple mediators, and also introduce a new decomposition of the total effect of an intervention on ambient pollution into the natural direct effect and natural indirect effects for all combinations of mediators. Both approaches are anchored to the same observed-data models, which we specify with Bayesian nonparametric techniques. We provide assumptions for estimating principal causal effects, then augment these with an additional assumption required for causal mediation analysis. The two analyses, interpreted in tandem, provide the first empirical investigation of the presumed causal pathways that motivate important air quality regulatory policies.

It is common to encounter missing data among the potential predictor variables in the setting of model selection. For example, in a recent study we attempted to improve the US guidelines for risk stratification after screening colonoscopy ( Cancer Causes Control 27 (2016) 1175–1185), with the aim to help reduce both overuse and underuse of follow-on surveillance colonoscopy. The goal was to incorporate selected additional informative variables into a neoplasia risk-prediction model, going beyond the three currently established risk factors, using a large dataset pooled from seven different prospective studies in North America. Unfortunately, not all candidate variables were collected in all studies, so that one or more important potential predictors were missing on over half of the subjects. Thus, while variable selection was a main focus of the study, it was necessary to address the substantial amount of missing data. Multiple imputation can effectively address missing data, and there are also good approaches to incorporate the variable selection process into model-based confidence intervals. However, there is not consensus on appropriate methods of inference which address both issues simultaneously. Our goal here is to study the properties of model-based confidence intervals in the setting of imputation for missing data followed by variable selection. We use both simulation and theory to compare three approaches to such post-imputation-selection inference: a multiple-imputation approach based on Rubin’s Rules for variance estimation ( Comput. Statist. Data Anal. 71 (2014) 758–770); a single imputation-selection followed by bootstrap percentile confidence intervals; and a new bootstrap model-averaging approach presented here, following Efron ( J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 109 (2014) 991–1007). We investigate relative strengths and weaknesses of each method. The “Rubin’s Rules” multiple imputation estimator can have severe undercoverage, and is not recommended. The imputation-selection estimator with bootstrap percentile confidence intervals works well. The bootstrap-model-averaged estimator, with the “Efron’s Rules” estimated variance, may be preferred if the true effect sizes are moderate. We apply these results to the colorectal neoplasia risk-prediction problem which motivated the present work.

We investigate the maximal degree in a Poisson–Delaunay graph in $mathbf{R}^{d}$, $dgeq 2$, over all nodes in the window $mathbf{W}_{ ho }:= ho^{1/d}[0,1]^{d}$ as $ ho $ goes to infinity. The exact order of this maximum is provided in any dimension. In the particular setting $d=2$, we show that this quantity is concentrated on two consecutive integers with high probability. A weaker version of this result is discussed when $dgeq 3$.

Abstract:
Let X 1 , X 2 , …, X n be a sequence of independent or locally dependent random variables taking values in ℤ + . In this paper, we derive sharp bounds, via a new probabilistic method, for the total variation distance between the distribution of the sum ∑ i =1 n X i and an appropriate Poisson or compound Poisson distribution. These bounds include a factor which depends on the smoothness of the approximating Poisson or compound Poisson distribution. This “smoothness factor” is of order O( σ −2 ), according to a heuristic argument, where σ 2 denotes the variance of the approximating distribution. In this way, we offer sharp error estimates for a large range of values of the parameters. Finally, specific examples concerning appearances of rare runs in sequences of Bernoulli trials are presented by way of illustration.

Bayesian Quantile Regression with Mixed Discrete and Nonignorable Missing Covariates

Abstract:
Bayesian inference on quantile regression (QR) model with mixed discrete and non-ignorable missing covariates is conducted by reformulating QR model as a hierarchical structure model. A probit regression model is adopted to specify missing covariate mechanism. A hybrid algorithm combining the Gibbs sampler and the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm is developed to simultaneously produce Bayesian estimates of unknown parameters and latent variables as well as their corresponding standard errors. Bayesian variable selection method is proposed to recognize significant covariates. A Bayesian local influence procedure is presented to assess the effect of minor perturbations to the data, priors and sampling distributions on posterior quantities of interest. Several simulation studies and an example are presented to illustrate the proposed methodologies.

Learning Semiparametric Regression with Missing Covariates Using Gaussian Process Models

Abstract:
Missing data often appear as a practical problem while applying classical models in the statistical analysis. In this paper, we consider a semiparametric regression model in the presence of missing covariates for nonparametric components under a Bayesian framework. As it is known that Gaussian processes are a popular tool in nonparametric regression because of their flexibility and the fact that much of the ensuing computation is parametric Gaussian computation. However, in the absence of covariates, the most frequently used covariance functions of a Gaussian process will not be well defined. We propose an imputation method to solve this issue and perform our analysis using Bayesian inference, where we specify the objective priors on the parameters of Gaussian process models. Several simulations are conducted to illustrate effectiveness of our proposed method and further, our method is exemplified via two real datasets, one through Langmuir equation, commonly used in pharmacokinetic models, and another through Auto-mpg data taken from the StatLib library.

Some Statistical Issues in Climate Science

Abstract:
Climate science is a field that is arguably both data-rich and data-poor. Data rich in that huge and quickly increasing amounts of data about the state of the climate are collected every day. Data poor in that important aspects of the climate are still undersampled, such as the deep oceans and some characteristics of the upper atmosphere. Data rich in that modern climate models can produce climatological quantities over long time periods with global coverage, including quantities that are difficult to measure and under conditions for which there is no data presently. Data poor in that the correspondence between climate model output to the actual climate, especially for future climate change due to human activities, is difficult to assess. The scope for fruitful interactions between climate scientists and statisticians is great, but requires serious commitments from researchers in both disciplines to understand the scientific and statistical nuances arising from the complex relationships between the data and the real-world problems. This paper describes a small fraction of some of the intellectual challenges that occur at the interface between climate science and statistics, including inferences for extremes for processes with seasonality and long-term trends, the use of climate model ensembles for studying extremes, the scope for using new data sources for studying space-time characteristics of environmental processes and a discussion of non-Gaussian space-time process models for climate variables. The paper concludes with a call to the statistical community to become more engaged in one of the great scientific and policy issues of our time, anthropogenic climate change and its impacts.

Many papers in the early part of Brown’s career focused on the admissibility or otherwise of estimators of a vector parameter. He established that inadmissibility of invariant estimators in three and higher dimensions is a general phenomenon, and found deep and beautiful connections between admissibility and other areas of mathematics. This review touches on several of his major contributions, with a focus on his celebrated 1971 paper connecting admissibility, recurrence and elliptic partial differential equations.
