Building beautiful little keycap watercolor vibrobots

My friend Steve Davee posted this fun project to Instructables. It's a perfect project for shut-in parents and kids to do together.

The main body parts of the bots are keyboard keycaps and Q-tips/cotton swabs. An eccentric weight (pager) motor provides the bouncy movement that makes your vibrobots go.

Dip the swabs in watercolor paints, place the little critter on some paper, and watch your little tabletop Jackson Pollockbot go to town.

Generating three-color pulses in high-gain harmonic-generation free-electron lasers with a tilted electron bunch

A multi-color light source is a significant tool for nonlinear optics experiments, pump–dump/repump–probe experiments and in other fields. Here, a novel method is proposed to create three-color pulses based on a high-gain harmonic-generation (HGHG) free-electron laser with a tilted electron bunch. In this method, the initial bunch tilt is created by transverse wakefields after the bunch passes through a corrugated structure with an off-axis orbit, and is further enlarged in a following drift section. Then the tilted bunch experiences the off-axis field of a quadrupole magnet to cool down the large transverse velocity induced before. After that, it enters an HGHG configuration adopting a transverse gradient undulator (TGU) as the radiator, where only three separated fractions of the tilted bunch will resonate at three adjacent harmonics of the seed wavelength and are enabled to emit three-color pulses simultaneously. In addition, the use of the natural transverse gradient of a normal planar undulator instead of the TGU radiator to emit three-color pulses is also studied in detail. Numerical simulations including the generation of the tilted bunch and the free-electron laser radiation confirm the validity and feasibility of this scheme both for the TGU radiator and the natural gradient in the extreme-ultraviolet waveband.

SPIND-TC: an indexing method for two-color X-ray diffraction data

Recent developments of two-color operation modes at X-ray free-electron laser facilities provide new research opportunities, such as X-ray pump/X-ray probe experiments and multiple-wavelength anomalous dispersion phasing methods. However, most existing indexing methods were developed for indexing diffraction data from monochromatic X-ray beams. Here, a new algorithm is presented for indexing two-color diffraction data, as an extension of the sparse-pattern indexing algorithm SPIND, which has been demonstrated to be capable of indexing diffraction patterns with as few as five peaks. The principle and implementation of the two-color indexing method, SPIND-TC, are reported in this paper. The algorithm was tested on both simulated and experimental data of protein crystals. The results show that the diffraction data can be accurately indexed in both cases. Source codes are publicly available at https://github.com/lixx11/SPIND-TC.

A coloring-book approach to finding coordination sequences

An elementary method is described for finding the coordination sequences for a tiling, based on coloring the underlying graph. The first application is to the two kinds of vertices (tetravalent and trivalent) in the Cairo (or dual-32.4.3.4) tiling. The coordination sequence for a tetravalent vertex turns out, surprisingly, to be 1, 4, 8, 12, 16, …, the same as for a vertex in the familiar square (or 44) tiling. The authors thought that such a simple fact should have a simple proof, and this article is the result. The method is also used to obtain coordination sequences for the 32.4.3.4, 3.4.6.4, 4.82, 3.122 and 34.6 uniform tilings, and the snub-632 tiling. In several cases the results provide proofs for previously conjectured formulas.

Patt's Hats: Time for the rights of spring – color!

Patt's outfit for April 12, 2013.; Credit: Michelle Lanz/KPCC

Patt Morrison with Michelle Lanz

You don’t believe it looking out your windows in Southern California today, but spring it is. Perhaps I am forcing the spring by wearing bouquets on my stems – I think I can identify ranunculus, poppies, dianthus, and maybe roses?

I don’t know how authentically botanical fabric print designers think they ought to be, but I have an unshakable childhood recall of a bedroom in my great-grandmother’s house wallpapers in blue roses, and I was for years thereafter convinced that I could grow myself some blue roses.

And is there a happier color than this jacket’s coral/peach, or a springier fabric than the cotton-blend pique? It’s not as strenuous a shade as it would be in its brightness equivalent elsewhere on the color wheel, like electric blue or acid green. [And if it were, well, I’d wear it anyway!]

But the cloche hat – Daisy Buchanan, eat your platinum heart out. The ruched ombre silk ribbon on the crown and the minute bits of bent and curled ostrich feathers, like hatchlings on the hat! [I like saying that even more than I like writing it: "ruched ombre." It sounds like a fantastical concoction of molecular gastronomy: "the rambutan brûlée this evening is topped with ruched ombre."?

Any bets on whether the May release of "The Great Gatsby" will revive 1920s chic? Who’s ready for dropped waistlines, lower heels and  long sautoir necklaces?
