The Department of Justice announced that it filed a complaint yesterday in federal court in the Northern District of Mississippi against Coahoma County, Mississippi (Coahoma County), to protect the employment rights of an Army Reservist, Staff Sergeant First Class (SSG) Jason Sims Sr.  

On Dec. 17, 2019, the Department of Justice filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois on behalf of Captain and Judge Advocate Derrick Strong against the City of Chicago Fire Department (CFD), alleging that the City violated the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act of 1994 (USERRA) when it failed to provide Strong with an opportunity, after his return from active duty military service, to take a promotional examination that he missed while deployed.

For future Internet of Things (IoT)-based Big Data applications (e.g., smart cities/transportation), wireless data collection from ubiquitous massive smart sensors with limited spectrum bandwidth is very challenging. On the other hand, to interpret the meaning behind the collected data, it is also challenging for edge fusion centers running computing tasks over large data sets with limited computation capacity. To tackle these challenges, by exploiting the superposition property of a multiple-access channel and the functional decomposition properties, the recently proposed technique, over-the-air computation (AirComp), enables an effective joint data collection and computation from concurrent sensor transmissions. In this paper, we focus on a single-antenna AirComp system consisting of $K$ sensors and one receiver (i.e., the fusion center). We consider an optimization problem to minimize the computation mean-squared error (MSE) of the $K$ sensors' signals at the receiver by optimizing the transmitting-receiving (Tx-Rx) policy, under the peak power constraint of each sensor. Although the problem is not convex, we derive the computation-optimal policy in closed form. Also, we comprehensively investigate the ergodic performance of AirComp systems in terms of the average computation MSE and the average power consumption under Rayleigh fading channels with different Tx-Rx policies. For the computation-optimal policy, we prove that its average computation MSE has a decay rate of $O(1/sqrt{K})$, and our numerical results illustrate that the policy also has a vanishing average power consumption with the increasing $K$, which jointly show the computation effectiveness and the energy efficiency of the policy with a large number of sensors.

St. Louis' first black prosecutor, Kim Gardner, has sued the city, its police union and five others for what she calls a racist effort to block her reform agenda. "Gardner was elected in 2016 on a promise to redress the scourge of historical inequality and rebuild trust in the criminal justice system among communities of color," reads the lawsuit filed Monday in federal court. Some are now pushing to change that, arguing that the laws are actually endangering public health. More than 1 million people in the U.S. are living with HIV, and their HIV status could conceivably put them behind bars. That's what happened to Michael Holder. "I served 8 1/2 years in prison and three years after on parole," Holder says. Back in 2000, Holder's ex-girlfriend testified that he didn't disclose his HIV status before they had sex. That's a crime in Michigan and in most states in the country. He says the day after she said that, she came in and recanted. "She testified the truth and said that she had lied and said that she was jealous, and she loved me and that I had told her just like I had testified and said I'd told her," Holder says.
