[SP-4-2]-(Acetonitrile-κN)chlorido[2-(4,6-diphenylpyridin-2-yl)phenyl-κ2C1,N]platinum(II)

The synthesis and crystal structure of the title PtII complex, [Pt(C23H16N)Cl(CH3CN)], based on the C,N-chelating 2,4,6-triphenylpyridine as the primary ligand, is described. The central PtII atom is in a distorted square-planar coordination environment. In the crystal, molecules are arranged via a metallophilic interaction between platinum atoms with a Pt⋯Pt contact of 7.052 (2) Å. In addition, a π–π interaction occurs.

The PtII atom in the title complex, [Pt(C15H18N4O4S)(C2H6OS)], exists within a square-planar NS2O donor set provided by the N, S, O atoms of the di-anionic tridentate thiosemicarbazo ligand and a dimethyl sulfoxide S atom. The two chelate rings are coplanar, subtending a dihedral angle of 1.51 (7)°. The maximum deviation from an ideal square-planar geometry is seen in the five-membered chelate ring with an S—Pt—S bite angle of 96.45 (2)°. In the crystal, molecules are linked via N—H⋯O, C—H⋯O, C—H⋯N and C—H⋯π interactions into two-dimensional networks lying parallel to the ab plane. The conformations of related cyclohexylhydrazine-1-carbothioamide ligands are compared to that of the title compound.

Crystal structure of poly[[diaquatetra-μ2-cyanido-iron(II)platinum(II)] acetone disolvate]

In the title polymeric complex, {[FePt(CN)4(H2O)2]·2C3H6O}n, the FeII cation has an octahedral [FeN4O2] geometry being coordinated by two water molecules and four cyanide anions. The Pt cation is located on an inversion centre and has a square-planar coordination environment formed by four cyanide groups. The tetracyanoplatinate anions bridge the FeII cations to form infinite two-dimensional layers that propagate in the bc plane. Two guest molecules of acetone per FeII are located between the layers. These guest acetone molecules interact with the coordinated water molecules by O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds.

The title compound, [FePt(C12H12O)(C18H15P)(C25H22P2)(CO)2]·2C7H8·CH2Cl2 or [(OC)2Fe(μ-dppm)(μ-C(=O)C(2,4,5-C6H2Me3)=CH)Pt(PPh3)], represents an example of a diphosphane-bridged heterobimetallic dimetallacyclopentenone complex resulting from a bimetallic activation of 1-ethynyl-2,4,5-trimethylbenzene and a metal-coordinated carbonyl ligand. The bridging μ2-C(=O)C(2,4,5-C6H2Me3)=CH unit (stemming from a carbon–carbon coupling reaction between CO and the terminal alkyne) forms a five-membered dimetallacyclopentenone ring, in which the C=C bond is π-coordinated to the Fe centre. The latter is connected to the Pt centre through a short metal–metal bond of 2.5770 (5) Å. In the crystal, the complex is solvated by one dichloromethane and two toluene molecules.

Each central platinum(II) atom in the crystal structures of chlorido[dihydroxybis(1-iminoethoxy)arsanido-κ3N,As,N']platinum(II), [Pt(C4H10AsN2O4)Cl] (1), and of chlorido[dihydroxybis(1-iminopropoxy)arsanido-κ3N,As,N']platinum(II), [Pt(C6H14AsN2O4)Cl] (2), is coordinated by two nitrogen donor atoms, a chlorido ligand and to arsenic, which, in turn, is coordinated by two oxygen donor ligands, two hydroxyl ligands and the platinum(II) atom. The square-planar and trigonal–bipyramidal coordination environments around platinum and arsenic, respectively, are significantly distorted with the largest outliers being 173.90 (13) and 106.98 (14)° for platinum and arsenic in (1), and 173.20 (14)° and 94.20 (9)° for (2), respectively. One intramolecular and four classical intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions are observed in the crystal structure of (1), which give rise to an infinite three-dimensional network. A similar situation (one intramolecular and four classical intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions) is observed in the crystal structure of (2). Various π-interactions are present in (1) between the platinum(II) atom and the centroid of one of the five-membered rings formed by Pt, As, C, N, O with a distance of 3.7225 (7) Å, and between the centroids of five-membered (Pt, As, C, N, O) rings of neighbouring molecules with distances of 3.7456 (4) and 3.7960 (6) Å. Likewise, weak π-interactions are observed in (2) between the platinum(II) atom and the centroid of one of the five-membered rings formed by Pt, As, C, N, O with a distance of 3.8213 (2) Å, as well as between the Cl atom and the centroid of a symmetry-related five-membered ring with a distance of 3.8252 (12) Å. Differences between (2) and the reported polymorph [Miodragović et al. (2013). Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 52, 10749–10752] are discussed.

BornAgain: software for simulating and fitting grazing-incidence small-angle scattering

BornAgain is a free and open-source multi-platform software framework for simulating and fitting X-ray and neutron reflectometry, off-specular scattering, and grazing-incidence small-angle scattering (GISAS). This paper concentrates on GISAS. Support for reflectometry and off-specular scattering has been added more recently, is still under intense development and will be described in a later publication. BornAgain supports neutron polarization and magnetic scattering. Users can define sample and instrument models through Python scripting. A large subset of the functionality is also available through a graphical user interface. This paper describes the software in terms of the realized non-functional and functional requirements. The web site https://www.bornagainproject.org/ provides further documentation.

Calculating carbon budgets for agricultural crops

A new study has combined measurements of carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes with estimates of other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from farming operations for 15 European crop sites over several years. It estimated that the sites lost on average 138g of carbon per m2 per year. The total GHG balance (including non-CO2 emissions) was equivalent to an average carbon loss of 203g of carbon per m2 per year.

Towards a circular economy for platinum in Europe

Around 40% of the platinum used in EU catalytic converters is not recovered for recycling and is therefore ‘lost’ forever, indicates a new study. A more circular economy for platinum is essential to reduce imports of this critical raw material to the EU and minimise its damaging effects on the environment, the researchers argue. Better collection systems for end-of-life catalytic converters and tighter regulation of waste exports could help close the loop on platinum.

Complying with emissions regulations: calculating the acid plume from ships’ desulphurisation equipment

Marine diesel contains sulphur compounds, which generate sulphur oxide (SOx) pollution and acid rain. Ships can use mitigating technologies to reduce their SOx emissions, but these can also have a negative environmental impact. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) introduced stringent legislation to control these, aspects of which are incorporated into EU policy. This study examined the implications of the IMO’s policy and recommends a number of design solutions to help ships comply.

Top predators maintain regulating role in human- dominated landscapes – but human activity is greatest limiting factor on other species

Large carnivores play important roles in ecosystems by regulating populations of herbivores and other species. Understanding how human activities affect the role of predators, particularly within human-modified systems such as agricultural landscapes, is therefore important. This study investigated how predator and prey populations were distributed in Transylvania, Romania, and assessed them in relation to human activities. The research highlights how relationships between large carnivores and people need to be considered as part of biodiversity conservation efforts, especially considering the successful recovery of several large carnivore populations within the EU.
