Frontpage SlideShow

Now fully responsive & Joomla 1.5 - 3.x compatible!

Frontpage SlideShow
is the easiest & most eye-catching way to display your featured articles or products in your Joomla website.

It creates an uber cool slideshow with text snippets laying on top of images, in a variety of templates and combined effects.

Frontpage SlideShow allows you to create multiple slideshows within your Joomla website (in different pages or even on the same page), comes with 8 uniquely styled templates, a powerful jQuery based slideshow engine with crossfade & carousel based transitions, text effects, statistics and can retrieve content automatically from Joomla articles/menus, K2 items and Virtuemart/HikaShop products!

Frontpage SlideShow is a pure CSS & JavaScript based slideshow system, which means it's dead simple to customize and it's both SEO and tablet/mobile friendly (in iOS, Android or Windows 8 smartphones & tablets).

And don't worry about how you'll manage your slideshows. Unlike other expensive/copycat implementations, Frontpage Slideshow has a dedicated Joomla backend component which you use to effortlessly manage your slideshows. Easy and fast.

Moreover, it now natively supports content fetching from K2 and the most popular e-commerce components for Joomla: Virtuemart (versions 2.x & 3.x) and HikaShop. That means you quickly make up your slides just by selecting the source (e.g. a K2 item) and Frontpage Slideshow will fetch in a snap the title, description text and associated image!

FEATURES

  • Fully compatible with Joomla 1.5 - 3.x
  • Lightweight & frontend optimized slideshow engine, based on jQuery, offering crossfade & carousel transition effects between slides, lava-lamp style navigation, progress bar and text transition effects. That means you have 24 different effect combinations to use!
  • 9 slideshow templates to get you started. Customizing them is very easy as all fonts, font-sizes, colors etc. are controlled by CSS. Building your own is a joy if you know your way around with MVC templating in Joomla.
  • Responsive as of v3.10.
  • The slide creation process is dead simple to use through guided steps.
  • Drag and drop slide re-ordering (per category) in the backend.
  • Integration with Joomla articles and the most popular Joomla content extensions like K2, Virtuemart (2.x & 3.x) & HikaShop. That means Frontpage Slideshow can import the title, text, link and associated image from such components with a single clicks. For example, if you want to create a slide from a K2 item, all you have to do is select that K2 item and Frontpage Slideshow will automatically populate all slide fields, which you are free of course to edit as you wish!
  • You can now display your slideshows either via the module (or multiple module copies) or via the new component view. That means you can create a direct menu link to a specific slideshow, so you can e.g. assign a slideshow to your homepage, without messing with module positions and funky module display conditions. This option is ideal for portfolio based websites that want to assign slideshows directly to Joomla menu items.
  • Multiple slideshows in your Joomla website, even on the same page (thanks to new slideshow engine) - so you can have a slideshow fetched in the component region and an other in a module or in combinations you define.
  • Better slide image uploading using ajax (which means better previewing) and better slide image management (similar to K2's), with multiple copies of your original image created for better performance. And we got some cool new templates to show in the near future using these different size images...
  • Statistics! Frontpage Slideshow will now track (by default) all slideshow clicks and create beautiful statistics graphs in the backend, so you can visually see which are your most popular slides in various timeframes. Using Frontpage Slideshow to promote products? Now you can now which products draw your customers attention more! Statistics can of course be disabled at any time if you prefer SEO over click tracking.
  • Better server-side performance compared to version 2.x. A new caching layer for the module and the new slideshow content prefetching mechanism, which reduces the queries needed to retrieve slide content from third-party extensions (K2, Virtuemart & HikaShop). In high traffic or high content volume Joomla websites, this translates to significantly better performance.
  • Better image compression on both desktop and mobile browsers with the integration of a 3rd party web service. This can lead to up to 50% image size reduction and mobile optimized serving of images when your site is viewed in mobile browsers on iPhone/iPad/Android etc.
  • Full ACL integration with Joomla 2.5+.
  • New version/update notification in Joomla 2.5+.

The component's user interface is very clean and easy to learn. It consists of only 2 areas to edit: your slides and your categories (slideshows).

Additionally, the styling/customization of each slideshow is entirely HTML/CSS based. You have full control over the layout of the slideshow and you can easily style it to suit your needs. No other website will ever share the same looks as yours!

As with all our Joomla extensions, Frontpage Slideshow uses MVC template overrides - so you can modify existing templates or create your own from scratch without a) hacking core extension code and b) worrying about future updates breaking up your changes.

Frontpage Slideshow has been successfully tested in all major browsers. The prebundled slideshow templates are fully compatible with Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, Edge and Internet Explorer version 7 and above.

SCREENSHOTS

Backend interface screenshots taken from Joomla 1.5 (which is nearly identical to Joomla 2.5) & Joomla 3.x. Frontpage Slideshow uses the Joomla backend design guidelines so it will match the design of all these Joomla versions, from 1.5 to 3.x.

Structure of the GDP-bound state of the SRP GTPase FlhF

The GTPase FlhF, a signal recognition particle (SRP)-type enzyme, is pivotal for spatial–numerical control and bacterial flagella assembly across diverse species, including pathogens. This study presents the X-ray structure of FlhF in its GDP-bound state at a resolution of 2.28 Å. The structure exhibits the classical N- and G-domain fold, consistent with related SRP GTPases such as Ffh and FtsY. Comparative analysis with GTP-loaded FlhF elucidates the conformational changes associated with GTP hydrolysis. These topological reconfigurations are similarly evident in Ffh and FtsY, and play a pivotal role in regulating the functions of these hydrolases.

New insights into the domain of unknown function (DUF) of EccC5, the pivotal ATPase providing the secretion driving force to the ESX-5 secretion system

Type VII secretion (T7S) systems, also referred to as ESAT-6 secretion (ESX) systems, are molecular machines that have gained great attention due to their implications in cell homeostasis and in host–pathogen interactions in mycobacteria. The latter include important human pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the etiological cause of human tuberculosis, which constitutes a pandemic accounting for more than one million deaths every year. The ESX-5 system is exclusively found in slow-growing pathogenic mycobacteria, where it mediates the secretion of a large family of virulence factors: the PE and PPE proteins. The secretion driving force is provided by EccC5, a multidomain ATPase that operates using four globular cytosolic domains: an N-terminal domain of unknown function (EccC5DUF) and three FtsK/SpoIIIE ATPase domains. Recent structural and functional studies of ESX-3 and ESX-5 systems have revealed EccCDUF to be an ATPase-like fold domain with potential ATPase activity, the functionality of which is essential for secretion. Here, the crystal structure of the MtbEccC5DUF domain is reported at 2.05 Å resolution, which reveals a nucleotide-free structure with degenerated cis-acting and trans-acting elements involved in ATP binding and hydrolysis. This crystallographic study, together with a biophysical assessment of the interaction of MtbEccC5DUF with ATP/Mg2+, supports the absence of ATPase activity proposed for this domain. It is shown that this degeneration is also present in DUF domains from other ESX and ESX-like systems, which are likely to exhibit poor or null ATPase activity. Moreover, based on an in silico model of the N-terminal region of MtbEccC5DUF, it is hypothesized that MtbEccC5DUF is a degenerated ATPase domain that may have retained the ability to hexamerize. These observations draw attention to DUF domains as structural elements with potential implications in the opening and closure of the membrane pore during the secretion process via their involvement in inter-protomer interactions.

Modernizing .NETpad: .NET 9 Arrives with a Few (More) Small Improvements for WPF (Premium)

I was excited to see Microsoft bring the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) back from the dead this past year: At Build 2024 back in May, it announced that it would continue investing in this 20-year-old technology, starting with support for Windows 11 theming that would arrive as part of .NET 9. In fact, I was so excited about this that I brought my .NETpad project back from the dead as well, and I spent much of the summer modernizing my Notepad clone with the new features. I wrote 24 articles documenting this work, but I was stymied by the half-assed nature of the improvements.

Microsoft released exactly one WPF update during the several months of .NET 9 development, and it never added any of the features I discovered were missing. And so as we headed into today's release of .NET 9, my excitement was somewhat diminished. My assumption was that we wouldn't see those missing features implemented until .NET 10, if ever.

Well, Microsoft just released .NET 9. As part of that release, it published updated documentation for WPF (and all the other .NET technologies). And to my surprise, there are some updates to WPF that address at least one of those missing features.

So let's take a look.

To add support for Windows 11 theming to a WPF project, you need to add a reference to the new Fluent theme resource dictionary in its App.xml file. It looks like so:

<Application.Resources>
    <ResourceDictionary>
      <ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>
        <ResourceDictionary Source="pack://application:,,,/PresentationFramework.Fluent;component/Themes/Fluent.xaml" />
      </ResourceDictionary.MergedDictionaries>
    </ResourceDictionary>
</Application.Resources>

But with the shipping version of .NET 9, there's a second, more elegant way to add Windows 11 theming support. Now, you can access a new Application.ThemeMode property of a new styling API to toggle the app's theme mode between Light, Dark, System, and None. And that's fantastic, because it addresses one of those missing features: To date, .NETpad has adapted itself to the system theme (Light or Dark), but there was no way to let the user pick a theme mode. (For example, if the system was set to Dark and the user wanted the app to use Light mode.) With this change, I can implement that feature.

Fortunately, .NETpad is ready for this change, too: If you followed along with my work this past summer, you may remember that I implemented the user interface for switching the app theme into its settings interface, but left the UI hidden because it didn't do anything. But I always felt that Microsoft would need to implement this features, so I left the code in there. Granted, I didn't think it would happen this quickly.

The shipping version of .NET 9 also adds explicit support for the Windows 11 accent color (as configured by the user in the Settings app in Personalization > Accent color). As it is, .NETpa...

The heptameric structure of the flagellar regulatory protein FlrC is indispensable for ATPase activity and disassembled by cyclic-di-GMP [Protein Structure and Folding]

The bacterial enhancer-binding protein (bEBP) FlrC, controls motility and colonization of Vibrio cholerae by regulating the transcription of class-III flagellar genes in σ54-dependent manner. However, the mechanism by which FlrC regulates transcription is not fully elucidated. Although, most bEBPs require nucleotides to stimulate the oligomerization necessary for function, our previous study showed that the central domain of FlrC (FlrCC) forms heptamer in a nucleotide-independent manner. Furthermore, heptameric FlrCC binds ATP in “cis-mediated” style without any contribution from sensor I motif 285REDXXYR291 of the trans protomer. This atypical ATP binding raises the question of whether heptamerization of FlrC is solely required for transcription regulation, or if it is also critical for ATPase activity. ATPase assays and size exclusion chromatography of the trans-variants FlrCC-Y290A and FlrCC-R291A showed destabilization of heptameric assembly with concomitant abrogation of ATPase activity. Crystal structures showed that in the cis-variant FlrCC-R349A drastic shift of Walker A encroached ATP-binding site, whereas the site remained occupied by ADP in FlrCC-Y290A. We postulated that FlrCC heptamerizes through concentration-dependent cooperativity for maximal ATPase activity and upon heptamerization, packing of trans-acting Tyr290 against cis-acting Arg349 compels Arg349 to maintain proper conformation of Walker A. Finally, a Trp quenching study revealed binding of cyclic-di-GMP with FlrCC. Excess cyclic-di-GMP repressed ATPase activity of FlrCC through destabilization of heptameric assembly, especially at low concentration of protein. Systematic phylogenetic analysis allowed us to propose similar regulatory mechanisms for FlrCs of several Vibrio species and a set of monotrichous Gram-negative bacteria.
