nx QNX becomes free for non-commercial use, releases Raspberry Pi 4 image By www.osnews.com Published On :: Thu, 07 Nov 2024 21:54:56 +0000 A long, long time ago, back when running BeOS as my main operating system had finally become impossible, I had a short stint running QNX as my one and only operating system. In 2004, before I joined OSNews and became its managing editor, I also wrote and published an article about QNX on OSNews, which is cringe-inducing to read over two decades later (although I was only 20 when I wrote that – I should be kind to my young self). Sadly, the included screenshots have not survived the several transitions OSNews has gone through since 2004. Anyway, back in those days, it was entirely possible to use QNX as a general purpose desktop operating system, mostly because of two things. First, the incredible Photon MicroGUI, an excellent and unique graphical environment that was a joy to use, and two, because of a small but dedicated community of enthousiasts, some of which QNX employees, who ported a ton of open source applications, from basic open source tools to behemoths like Thunderbird, the Mozilla Suite, and Firefox, to QNX. It even came with an easy-to-use package manager and associated GUI to install all of these applications without much hassle. Using QNX like this was a joy. It really felt like a tightly controlled, carefully crafted user experience, despite desktop use being so low on the priority list for the company that it might as well have not been on there at all. Not long after, I think a few of the people inside QNX involved with the QNX desktop community left the company, and the entire thing just fizzled out afterwards when the company was acquired by Harman Kardon. Not long after, it became clear the company lost all interest, a feeling only solidified once Blackberry acquired the company. Somewhere in between the company released some of its code under some not-quite-open-source license, accompanied by a rather lacklustre push to get the community interested again. This, too, fizzled out. Well, it seems the company is trying to reverse course, and has started courting the enthusiast community once again. This time, it’s called QNX Everywhere, and it involves making QNX available for non-commercial use for anyone who wants it. No, it’s not open source, and yes, it requires some hoops to jump through still, but it’s better than nothing. In addition, QNX also put a bunch of open source demos, applications, frameworks, and libraries on GitLab. One of the most welcome new efforts is a bootable QNX image for the Raspberry Pi 4 (and only the 4, sadly, which I don’t own). It comes with a basic set of demo application you can run from the command line, including a graphical web browser, but sadly, it does not seem to come with Photon microGUI or any modern equivalent. I’m guessing Photon hasn’t seen a ton of work since its golden days two decades ago, which might explain why it’s not here. There’s also a list of current open source ports, which includes chunks of toolkits like GTK and Qt, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Honestly, as cool as this is, it seems it’s mostly aimed at embedded developers instead of weird people who want to use QNX as a general purpose operating system, which makes total sense from QNX’ perspective. I hope Photon microGUI will make a return at some point, and it would be awesome – but I expect unlikely – if QNX could be released as open source, so that it would be more likely a community of enthusiasts could spring up around it. For now, without much for a non-developer like me to do with it, it’s not making me run out to buy a Raspberry Pi 4 just yet. Full Article QNX

nx Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor review: This or the Fronx? By www.autocarindia.com Published On :: Mon, 3 Jun 2024 16:24:00 +1000 Between May 1, 2023 and April 30, 2024, a whopping 44 percent of Toyota’s total sales came from rebadged Maruti products like the Baleno-based Glanza, Grand Vitara-based Hyryder and Ertiga-based Rumion. This model clearly seems to be working for Toyota, and now, there’s a fourth Maruti-based offering, called the Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor. Toyota Taisor design This newest Toyota is a badge-engineered Fronx, which is a handsome car to begin with owing to its crossover-esque stance and coupe-like roofline that exert serious appeal. Furthermore, Toyota designers have done a neat job by seamlessly integrating design elements that firmly link it to other models from the Japanese brand. For example, its DRLs are similar to the Hyryder and the grille, with its honeycomb pattern, is similar to the pre-facelift Innova Crysta. As a result, the Taisor looks like it is a part of the Toyota family when viewed from the front. If you look closely, the LEDs in the tail-lights in the outer and tailgate section don’t seem to match. Compared to the Fronx, its 16-inch alloys sport a different design, and at the rear, the outer section of the tail-lamps with C-shaped LEDs are new. The connected LEDs on the tailgate are identical to the Fronx, and when you look closely, the LEDs in the tail-lights in the outer and tailgate section don’t seem to match. Toyota Taisor interior Unlike the outside, where the Taisor does get an identity of its own, the interiors are bereft of any significant differentiation – they're identical to the Fronx in terms of the design, colour, quality and even fit-finish. But it is still a smart-looking design and the brown-black colours add some vibrancy to the cabin. Ergonomics are spot on – all the controls are easily within reach, and there's plenty of adjustment to find the right driving position. There’s even an adjustable armrest console to get comfortable with. Unlike the outside, the interiors are bereft of any significant differentiation from the Fronx. The Taisor is spacious and its rear bench is comfortable. What’s nice is that there are three individual adjustable headrests and three-point seatbelts too. Sadly, like Maruti, even Toyota doesn’t give load sensors at the back, so even if no one’s here, you’ll need to keep the seatbelts fastened. Otherwise, the rear seatbelt reminder will annoy you for about 90 seconds at the start of every journey. In terms of equipment, it packs in a heads-up display, auto LED headlamps, cruise control, a 9-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, rear air-con vents and more. It also packs in a useful 360-degree camera, however, its resolution and display quality leaves a lot to be desired. What’s nice, though, is that ESP, hill-start assist and ABS with EBD are standard across the range; side and curtain airbags are reserved for the higher turbo variants. Toyota Taisor Performance Like the Fronx, the Toyota Taisor is available with a 1.2-litre petrol engine with a 5-speed manual and automated manual transmission (AMT), and a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol mated to either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic. What’s interesting is that while Toyota commands a slight premium for the 1.2-litre variants over its Maruti counterpart, the turbo variants are priced at par with the Fronx turbo, with the same features list. This strategy seems to have been adopted to push turbo petrol sales in the Taisor, since it contributes less than 10 percent to the Fronx’s sales. And in Toyota’s case, it seems to be working as the turbo accounts for nearly 45 percent of Taisor’s total sales. The Taisor's 1.0-litre Boosterjet is one of the nicest small capacity turbo-petrol units around. Speaking of its 1.0-litre engine, it is one of the nicest small capacity turbo-petrol units in terms of smoothness, performance, linearity, as well as refinement. It feels responsive, revs freely and it spins so eagerly that when you’re driving with verve, the 6,000rpm limiter feels a bit too conservative. There’s a mild-hybrid system too which provides electric boost to this engine when under load, but the difference is negligible and you’ll have to look at the animation on the MID to know when this mild-hybrid system is at work. The 6-speed torque converter is smooth in its operation. It isn’t an enthusiastic unit per se, as the upshifts are quite slow. However, what driving enthusiasts will appreciate is the fact that this gearbox gives you full control in manual mode; it doesn’t upshift automatically. Also, the paddle shifters respond to inputs rather obediently. Ride is a little busy at low speeds. We timed the Toyota Taisor too, and it sprinted from 0-100kph in 11.86 seconds. For reference, the timing is similar to the 120hp Kia Sonet DCT’s 11.94 seconds. However, its rolling acceleration times from 20-80kph and 40-100kph of 6.95 seconds and 8.49 seconds, respectively, are similar to the quickest compact SUV in the market, the 131hp Mahindra XUV 3XO. At low speeds, the Taisor’s ride quality feels a bit busy due to its stiff suspension setup. On the flipside, it feels stable and confident at triple digit speeds. The steering is light, turning radius is tight and even though it isn’t bristling with feel or feedback, the Taisor feels quite engaging to drive. Toyota Taisor verdict With the Taisor, the Japanese brand has opened its showroom to a wider set of buyers, many of whom are first-time Toyota buyers. The Fronx is a fundamentally sorted car to begin with, and the Taisor carries forward these strengths such as its spacious and practical cabin, lengthy equipment list, and its engaging driving manners – turbo-petrol or naturally aspirated petrol, take your pick. Toyota also provides a three-year standard warranty, while its Maruti counterpart provides a two-year warranty, although it is worth mentioning that both offer extended warranty up to the fifth year. Hence, between the Maruti Fronx and Toyota Taisor, the deciding factor is their design and an individual’s brand preference, in terms of sales experience and proximity to a service center. But whichever you pick, these are compact crossovers you can’t go wrong with. nx The Influence of Augmented Reality Face Filter Addiction on Online Social Anxiety: A Stimulus-Organism-Response Perspective By Published On :: 2024-04-18 Aim/Purpose: This study aims to analyze the factors that influence user addiction to AR face filters in social network applications and their impact on the online social anxiety of users in Indonesia. Background: To date, social media users have started to use augmented reality (AR) face filters. However, AR face filters have the potential to create positive and negative effects for social media users. The study combines the Big Five Model (BFM), Sense of Virtual Community (SVOC), and Stimuli, Organism, and Response (SOR) frameworks. We adopted the SOR theory by involving the personality factors and SOVC factors as stimuli, addiction as an organism, and social anxiety as a response. BFM is the most significant theory related to personality. Methodology: We used a quantitative approach for this study by using an online survey. We conducted research on 903 Indonesian respondents who have used an AR face filter feature at least once. The respondents were grouped into three categories: overall, new users, and old users. In this study, group classification was carried out based on the development timeline of the AR face filter in the social network application. This grouping was carried out to facilitate data analysis as well as to determine and compare the different effects of the factors in each group. The data were analyzed using the covariance-based structural equation model through the AMOS 26 program. Contribution: This research fills the gap in previous research which did not discuss much about the impact of addiction in using AR face filters on online social anxiety of users of social network applications. Findings: The results of this study indicated neuroticism, membership, and immersion influence AR face filter addiction in all test groups. In addition, ARA has a significant effect on online social anxiety. Recommendations for Practitioners: The findings are expected to be valuable to social network service providers and AR creators in improving their services and to ensure policies related to the list of AR face filters that are appropriate for use by their users as a form of preventing addictive behavior of that feature. Recommendation for Researchers: This study suggested other researchers consider other negative impacts of AR face filters on aspects such as depression, life satisfaction, and academic performance. Impact on Society: AR face filter users may experience changes in their self-awareness in using face filters and avoid the latter’s negative impacts. Future Research: Future research might explore other impacts from AR face filter addiction behavior, such as depression, life satisfaction, and so on. Apart from that, future research might investigate the positive impact of AR face filters to gain a better understanding of the impact of AR face filters. Full Article

nx Effect of Superstition and Anxiety on Consumer Decision-Making in Triathletes By Published On :: 2024-06-19 Aim/Purpose: The aim of the present study is to investigate how pre-game superstition and anxiety can drive the consumption and purchase of sports products and objects by triathletes. Methodology: We tested our hypotheses via a cross-sectional study on a sample of N=124 triathletes. Contribution: The originality of our work stands in the provision of empirical evidence on the role of superstition and anxiety in characterized consumer decision-making of triathletes. Theoretically and practically, our results can extend our knowledge of the role of cognitive factors in consumer behaviors among athletes. Findings: The results of the Structural Equation Modelling provided evidence of our hypothesized relationship between pre-game anxiety and superstition, and cognitive biases. Pre-game anxiety increases the level of incidence of specific cognitive biases characterized by intuitive and implicit thinking, while superstition leads to more rational and personal cognitive biases, which affect their purchasing of sports products before games and competitions. Some say that the Administration is trying to establish this connection because of a law that the US Congress passed three days after the 9/11 attacks. That law gave then President George W. Bush the authority to go to war with al-Qaeda and any related organisation without Congressional approval. Also, we meet Iranian-Americans who are feeling particularly anxious as tension between the US and Iran escalates; and we find out what possessions people in Tehran are looking to sell, to find out how sanctions are affecting ordinary Iranians.(President Donald Trump signs an executive order imposing fresh sanctions on Iran in the Oval Office of the White House.
